二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Stories about sled dogs hauling medicine and supplies through the frozen wilderness have become the stuff of legends, but did you know pups are proving just as powerful in the waves as they are on the ice?

In Italy, an elite squadron of 350 specially-trained dogs from the Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs (Scuola Italiana Cani Salvataggio, or SICS) has successfully been patrolling the beaches, working as lifeguards. 300 SICS units, consisting of one dog and one trainer, are tasked with watching over approximately 30 of the country’s busiest beaches. Thanks to their willingness to perform, strength, and fearless exploits-including leaping from helicopters into the surf below to rescue at-risk swimmers-an average of 20-30 lives are saved annually by the doggie guards, and that number continues to climb each year.

Earlier this month, when several families, including eight children, were endangered by strong wind and wave conditions while 330 feet from shore, three doggie lifeguards and their trainers rushed in to save the day. With the help of their human companions, dogs Eros, Mya, and Mira pulled everyone to safety in about 15 minutes.

The SICS program is the brainchild of 59-year-old Ferruccio Pilenga, who got the idea that dogs would make excellent lifeguards back in 1989 from watching his own Newfoundland, an immensely powerful swimmer named Mas. “He pulled a water-filled boat with three people on board for half an hour,” Pilenga told The Times of London. “A human cannot do that.”

The SICS program is arduous. After 18 months of basic training, only those dogs successfully completing the required steps are considered ready to move on to the more intensive aspects of lifesaving techniques, such as jumping from helicopters and leaping from speeding boats.

【1】What can be learned from Paragraph 2?

A.SICS trains both dogs and other animals.

B.Each SICS unit has at least two dogs.

C.The dogs have rescued about 30 lives so far.

D.The dogs’ performance is improving annually.

【2】What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?

A.To prove dogs’ loyalty to humans.

B.To show how dogs work with their trainers.

C.To explain the cause of the accident off the shore.

    D.To remind swimmers about safety.

【3】What do we know about Ferruccio Pilenga?

A.He and his children created the SICS program.

B.He got the idea when he was watching a movie about dogs.

C.He thought dogs had advantages over humans as lifeguards.

D.He lost his dog Mas when rescuing some swimmers.

【4】What does the underlined word “arduous" in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.easy

    B.interesting

  • 23、Grant Wood’s American Gothic caused a stir(轰动)in 1930 when it was exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago and awarded a prize of 300 dollars. Newspapers across the country carried the story, and the painting of a farmer and a younger woman posed before a white house brought the artist instant fame.

In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in the small southern Iowa town of Eldon. Wood was so fascinated by it that he decided to paint the house along with the kind of people he thought should live in that house. In the painting, the farmer is modeled on his dentist. Dr. Byron McKeeby. His younger sister Nan served as a model for the woman (imagined to be the farmer’s wife or daughter). Wood wanted to give a description of the traditional roles of men and women as the man is holding a pitchfork (干草叉) symbolizing hard labor. Each element was painted separately; the models sat separately and never stood in front of the house. The Gothic style of the house inspired the painting’s title.

American Gothic remains one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting has become part of American popular culture. Some believe that Wood used it to satirize(讽刺) the narrow-mindedness that has been said to characterize Midwestern culture. The painting may also be read as a praise of the moral virtue or rural America or even as a mixture of praise and satire. American Gothic is one of the few images to reach the status of cultural symbol, along with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

  • 24、   Are you smarter than your parents and grandparents? According to James Flynn, a professor at a New Zealand university, you are! Over the course of the last century, people’s IQ test scores have gotten steadily higher — on average, three points higher each decade. This improvement is known as the “Flynn effect”, and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge. Flynn believes that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment, but the improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity (遗传). So what occurred in the 20th century to help people achieve higher scores?

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general and the learning of test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test. Others have pointed to better nutrition. Babies now are born larger, healthier, and with more brain development than in the past. Another suggested explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information, which improves their problem-solving skills.

Flynn has limited the possible explanations after carefully examining test data and discovering that the improvement in scores has taken place in only certain parts of the IQ test. Test-takers are not doing better on the math or vocabulary sections of the test; they are doing better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test shows a set of shapes, and test-takers must find the patterns and connections between them.

According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases. Every time you play a computer game, you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps you do well on one kind of intelligence test. So are you really smarter than your parents? In one very specific way, you may be.

1According to the passage, the “Flynn effect” is ________.

A.an increase in IQ test scores over time

B.a method used to measure intelligence

C.the influence of technology on intelligence

D.a theory that connects intelligence to experience

2What is the function of the third paragraph?

A.To list the findings of Professor Flynn’s research.

B.To provide possible explanations that disprove Flynn’s ideas.

C.To outline different theories explaining the increase in IQ scores.

D.To describe how research was carried out in the measuring of intelligence.

3According to the passage, newer educational techniques include _________.

    A.exposing children to fewer tests

    B.giving children clearer teaching instructions

C.getting children to memorize lots of information

D.encouraging children to find out things themselves

4The writer believes that computer games _________.

A.have discouraged people from taking exercise

B.have helped improve people’s visual intelligence

C.have made young people become less intelligent

D.have caused young people to have poorer vocabularies

5Which statement would Professor Flynn agree with?

A.Development of technology contributes to intelligence improvement on math.

B.Not all aspects of intelligence have increased.

C.The IQ test pattern should be changed.

D.The language ability of people has improved.

  • 25、Open Offices Can Lead to Closed Minds

“Loneliness is a crowded room,” as Bryan Ferry of the band Roxy Music once sang, adding that everyone was “all together, all alone.” The open-plan office might have been designed to make his point. That is not the reason for the layout, of course. The supposed aim of open-plan offices is to ensure that workers will have more ____ with their colleagues, and that the resulting ____ will lead to greater productivity.

Ethan Bernstein and Stephen Turban, two Harvard Business School academics, set out to test this proposition. The authors surveyed interactions between colleagues in two unnamed multinational companies which had ____ open-plan offices. They did so by recruiting workers to wear different devices to detect, record, and monitor their interactions, body movement, and their location.

At the first company, the authors found that face-to-face interactions were more than three times higher in the old, cubicle (小隔间)-based office than in an open-plan space where employees have clear lines of sight to each other. ____, the number of e-mails people sent to each other ____ by 56% when they switched to open-plan. In the second company, face-to-face interactions decreased by a third after the switch to open-plan, whereas ____ traffic increased by between 22% and 50%.

Why did this shift occur? The authors suggest that employees value their ____ and find new ways to ____ it in an open-plan office. They shut themselves off by wearing large headphones to keep out the ____ caused by nearby colleagues. Indeed, those who _____ open-plan offices seem to have forgotten the importance of being able to concentrate on your work.

____ also find other ways of communicating with their fellow workers. Rather than have a chat in front of a large audience, employees simply send an e-mail; the result (as measured at one of the two companies surveyed) was that ____ declined.

Cubicles do not offer a great work environment either; they are still noisy and cut off employees from natural light. But at least workers have more of a chance to give their work area a(n) ____ touch. Allowing plenty of room for pictures of children, office plants, novelty coffee mugs — these are ways of making people feel more relaxed and happy in their jobs.

However, an open-plan office is a clear ____ to low-level office workers that they are seen as disposable cogs in a machine. Combine this with the lack of privacy and the office becomes a(n) ____ place to work. Workers could stay at home but that negates the intended benefits of collaboration that open-plan offices bring.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

High school exit tests are tests that students must pass to graduate from high school. In the last few years. however, a number of states in America have dropped them. Although some states still use them for diplomas, the number is down from a high of 27 states during the testing craze promoted by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The appearance of this phenomenon is small wonder. Researches clearly show that exit tests have little positive effects on students. A 2014 report found exit testing was associated with lower graduation rates, negatively affected labor market outcomes, and, most alarmingly, produced a 12.5 percent increase in incarceration( 监禁)rates. Exit exams, the study concluded, had tended to add little value for most students.

Exit testing relies on the following assumptions. One is that standardized testing can serve as a kind of “quality control”for high school graduates, guaranteeing that graduates are college ready. The other is that they have predicting value for future success in academic situations.

But there is little evidence. The tests don't exactly measure what they pretend to measure. For example, qualities such as intelligence, academic ability, college readiness are not determined. Those that should be developed in all young people, like responsibility, critical thinking, and empathy (移植),are not measured, either.Even supporters of exit tests have acknowledged that they don't offer reliable data.

Thus, more and more people are suggesting that exit test scores ought to be just one component of the high school diploma. Schools should consider many other records including credits earned, courses taken, activities, service, projects and other elements of academic accomplishment so that students can be evaluated flexibly. In other words, exit test scores should never be the only criterion for high school diplomas.
