二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The Internet is the largest library in the history of the world and a great resource for anyone seeking information. 1 In recent years, plagiarism from online sources has become a serious problem, especially among students.

Original written work and information are protected by copyright laws. Therefore, when you use information you find while doing research, you should always give credit to the person that produced it. To plagiarize is to use ideas that are not your own without giving credit to the original source, or to claim that someone else’s ideas are your own. This is a dishonest practice.

Internet-related plagiarism has become such a problem. 2 There are thousands of resources for students who wish only to copy or cheat. However, the Internet also makes it easier for educators to check for plagiarism. Often a simple Internet search for a quote will be enough to expose copying. 3 Because copying and pasting(粘贴) is so easy, it is becoming more and more common for well-meaning students to mix up source material with their original ideas. While unintended plagiarism usually happens innocently, it is still a mistake.

4 Usually, the first step of researching is to gather information. You’d better keep a computer document named “References” where you can keep useful information you search on the Internet. Copy and paste the material directly from the document. When you print out parts of the article from the document, print the first page of the article. 5 These will help you remember the source of the information. Then print pages that have the information you need. After you finish your assignment, in the same way that you review your work for clarity and mistakes, you need to check that you have matched the quoted information with the correct source. Following these tips, you will avoid mixing up source material with your ideas.

A.It lists details like the name of writer and publication.

B.But doing research on the Internet is not without its risks.

C.This is because it is so easy to find and copy information online.

D.Some educators are more concerned about unintended plagiarism.

E.In addition to dishonesty, plagiarism is a lost opportunity for students.

F.To avoid unintended plagiarizing, managing your sources becomes important.

G.If you use ideas from other writers without quoting from the original work, you’re plagiarizing.

  • 22、There’s a case to be made, from things like Google search figures, that Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken you know, the one about two paths diverging (分开) in a wood is the most popular in modern history. Yet people still can’t agree what it means. On the surface, it’s a fridge-magnet cliché (陈词滥调) on the importance of taking risks and choosing the road less travelled. But many argue it slyly mocks (暗讽) that American belief in the individual’s power to determine his or her future. After all, the poet admits that both paths look roughly similarly well-travelled. And how could he be sure he took the right one? He’ll never know where the other leads. Looking back at our life histories, we tell ourselves we faced important dilemmas and chose wisely. But maybe only because it’s too awful to admit we’re stumbling (跌跌撞撞地走) mapless among the trees, or that our choices don’t make much difference.

Two psychologists, Karalyn Enz and Jennifer Talarico, throw light on these matters in a new study with a title that nods to Frost: Forks In The Road. They sought to clarify how people think about “turning points” versus “transitions” in life. A turning point, by their definition, is a moment that changes your future deciding to leave a job or marriage, say but often isn’t visible from the outside, at least at first. “Transitions” involve big external changes: going to university, marrying, emigrating (迁出). Sometimes the two go together, as when you move to a new place and realize it’s where you belong. (“New Yorkers are born all over the country,” Delia Ephron said, “and then they come to New York and it hits them: oh, that’s who I am.”) But it’s turning points we remember as most significant, Enz and Talarico conclude, whether or not they also involve transitions.

The distinction is useful: it underlines how the most outwardly obvious life changes aren’t always those with the biggest impact. Hence the famous “focusing illusion”, which describes how we exaggerate (夸大) the importance of a single factor on happiness: you switch jobs, or spouses, only to discover you brought the same troublesome old you to the new situation. Before it became a joke, “midlife crisis” referred to a turning point that happens because your circumstances don’t change, when your old life stops feeling meaningful. Turning points can be caused by mundane (世俗的) things the offhand remark that makes you realize you’re in the wrong life or by nothing at all.

【1Why do some people think the poem makes fun of the American belief?

    A. Because the two roads are more or less similar in the poet’s view.

    B. Because Americans believe they can decide their future themselves.

    C. Because Americans can find their way easily in a forest just with a map.

    D. Because Americans surely know which road to take without consideration.

【2】Which of the following can be considered as a transition?

    A. Your experience of midlife crisis.

    B. Your choice of the road to take.

    C. Your decision to travel abroad.

    D. Your move into a new flat.

【3What can we infer from this passage?

    A. Turning points involving transitions are often remembered as most significant.

    B. The biggest impact is often characterized with obvious outside changes.

    C. A fundamental change is often affected by more than one single factor.

    D. We can rid ourselves of the unpleasant past with the change of a job.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Is our fate in our own hands?

    B. Must people make changes in life?

    C. Should we choose the road less travelled?

    D. Are turning points connected with transitions?

  • 23、Lost &Found

Recently, CTtransit changed the Lost &. Found policy and procedures. If you have lost an item on a CTtransit bus, you must first call Lost & Found and speak with a Customer Service Representative for your area. If CTtransit is in possession of your lost item, and you can confirm ownership, then you may schedule a time to get your item back.

If you have scheduled a time with Customer Service to get back your lost item, when you arrive at the facility gate, give your name to the security guard. You must have a photo ID available to show CTtransit Security or another form of valid ID to confirm your date of birth and address. The security guard will direct you to the pick-up location.

If you misplace something on the bus, there is a good chance that we will find it. Each day, operators pick up articles left on their buses and turn them in to the office. Lost items that are recovered are kept for 30 days. CTtransit is not responsible for items left on the buses.

  • 24、   When Omar Yaghi was growing up in Jordan, his neighborhood received water for only about 5 hours once every 2 weeks. If Yaghi wasn’t up at dawn to turn on the taps to store water, his family, their cow, and their garden had to go without. At a meeting last week, Yaghi, now a chemist at the University of California, reported that he and his colleagues have created a solar-powered device that could provide water for millions in water-stressed regions. At its heart is a porous crystalline  (多孔晶体) material, known as a metal-organic framework (MOF), which acts like a sponge: It sucks water vapor out of air, and then releases it as liquid water.

Yaghi and his colleagues first developed a zirconium( )-based MOF in 2014 that could harvest and release water. But at $160 per kilogram, zirconium is too expensive for massive use. So, last year, his team came up with an alternative called MOF-303, based on aluminum, which costs just $3 per kilogram, but the harvest was only about 0.2 liters per kilogram of MOF per day.

In July 2019, Yaghi reported that his team has designed a new and far more productive water harvester. Supported by a solar panel to power a fan and heater, which speed the cycles, the new device produces up to 1.3 liters of water per kilogram of MOF per day from desert air. Yaghi expects further improvements to increase that number to 8 to 10 liters per day. And his company plans to release a microwave-size device able to provide up to 8 liters per day this fall. The company promises an enlarged version next year that will produce 22,500 liters per day, enough to supply a small village.

However, it needs to be shown that Yaghi’s MOFs can be produced cheaply on a large scale. Each potential commercial MOF needs to prove itself in stability, efficiency, and life span. But if MOFs can pass those tests, they could offer a solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems.

1Why is Omar Yaghi’s childhood mentioned at the beginning?

A.To show how serious water problem is. B.To lead in the topic.

C.To introduce the chemist. D.To arouse reader’s interest.

2What is the problem of MOF-303?

A.It costs too much. B.It can’t last long.

C.It is hard to operate. D.It is low in efficiency.

3According to Yaghi, how much water will a large water harvester produce per day?

    A.1.3 liters. B.10 liters.

    C.22,500 liters. D.8 liters.

4What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

A.Yaghi’s MOFs are in great demand now.

B.Yaghi’s MOFs may help solve water shortage.

C.Yaghi’s MOFs have already entered the market.

D.Mass production of Yaghi’s MOFs is impossible.
