二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.

Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how ihey turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers arc then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe arc then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底).This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly  material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rolhy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future." When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

1How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?

    A. They are used to make shoes.

    B. They are buried or burned.

    C. They are changed into soft materials.

    D. They are returned to factories for reuse.

2What does the underlined word “knitted” in the third paragraph mean?

    A. Combined. B. Fixed.

    C. Spotted. D. Repaired.

3Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy’s shoes?

    A. The design and color.

    B. The reasonable price.

    C. The star power of Gwyneth Paltrow.

    D. The company's advertisement.

4What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To advertise a new kind of shoes.

    B. To describe the process of making shoes.

    C. To introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.

    D. To stress the importance of environmental protection.

  • 22、Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.

Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) , with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.

“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise.” Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.

In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.

【1】What is the writer mainly concerned about?

    A.The disappearance of languages.

    B.The challenge of climate change.

C.The reaction to the language crisis.

D.The trend of the speedy globalization.

【2】Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To explain the main reason for language density.

B.To show the common features of endangered languages.

C.To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.

D.To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.

【3】What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?

A.Support migrants to access local education.

    B.Discourage people from massive migration.

C.Improve the living conditions of minority groups.

D.Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave

B.Lost for Words: Rising Seas Bring Threat of Catastrophe

C.Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation

D.Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis

  • 23、   Alysa Liu is an ice skater. In 2016, the then 10-year-old girl became the youngest intermediate figure skating (花样滑冰)champion in U.S. history. In 2018, Liu became the youngest to compete in and win the U.S. junior championships.

In January, 2019, she made history again at the Geico U.S. Women's Figure Skating Championships. At the championships, things were initially going well for the defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell. But later Tennell had a falling in her performance. Meanwhile, Liu became the first and youngest U.S. woman to land three triple axels (三周半跳)in competition.

Though Liu made them look, easy, triple axels are extremely challenging. The skater has to jump from the outside edge of one skate, turning in the air. "Double" or “triple" refers to the number of rotations (旋转)the skater completes before landing. The term is a little misleading given that the skater has to do an extra half rotation, meaning that for a triple, the skater is actually completing 3.5 rotations. To be successful, the skater has to have both incredible body strength and control.

When asked about her great performance, Liu thought it was not worth showing off. And she was enthusiastic about preparing for bigger games. But Liu was ineligible to compete at the 2019 World Figure Skating Championships in Japan due to the minimum age requirement of 15. However, that didn't bother her.

Liu fell in love with ice skating during her first lesson at a center. She showed such talent that Laura Lipetsky, who was teaching the group lessons, asked her father to let her receive private lessons. Lipetsky said, “She wanted to learn, and I wanted to guide." The two have been inseparable since then. In 2017 Laura sent Liu to the University of Delaware for a certain analysis that researchers have created to help outstanding American skaters improve their jump techniques.

Liu has been homeschooled since the age of 10. She gets her homework done between daily practices, and usually eats dinner in the car on her way home. Though that might appear to be a lot for someone so young, Liu takes it happily.

【1】What achievement did Alysa make at the age of 13?

A.She won the U.S. junior championships.

B.She was allowed to compete in the 2019 championships in Japan.

C.She became an intermediate figure skating champion.

D.She defeated the defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The requirements for figure skating.

B.The difficulty of carrying out triple axels.

C.The skills needed in skating rotations.

D.The differences between double axels and triple axels.

【3】What does the underlined word "ineligible" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Lacking time.

    B.Lacking confidence.

    C.Having no qualification.

    D.Showing little enthusiasm.

【4】What can we learn about Laura Lipetsky?

A.She was good at teaching group lessons.

B.She instructed Liu's father in figure skating.

C.She made a contribution in Liu's progress in sports.

D.She obtained great support from Liu and her father.

  • 24、   Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day 2020 occurs on Wednesday, April 22—the holiday’s 50th anniversary. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living.

By the early 1960s, Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment. Rachael Carson’s 1962 bestseller Silent Spring pointed out the dangerous effects of pesticides(杀虫剂) on the American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River shed light on the problem of chemical waste disposal. Until that time, protecting the planet’s natural resources was not part of the national political plan. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with environmental issues—let alone practiced-recycling.

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, Senator(参议员) Gaylord Nelson was determined to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk. In the fall of 1969, Nelson, considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle and invited the entire nation to get involved. He later recalled: “The response was electric. Telegrams, letters and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had an opportunity to express their concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air.”

The first Earth Day was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and changing public attitudes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), “Public opinions polls(投票) indicate that in May 1971, 25 percent of the U.S. public declared protecting the environment to be an important goal, a 2,500 percent increase over 1969.”

Earth Day kicked off the “environmental decade with a bang,” as Senator Nelson later put it. During the 1970s, a number of important environmental laws were passed, among them the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act and the Endangered Species Act, etc. Another key development was the establishment of the EPA in December 1970, which was tasked with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment—air, water and land.

1What do we learn about the circumstances in America before Earth Day was founded?

A.The overuse of pesticides had little impact on the American countryside.

B.The fire on Cuyahoga River was caused by improper chemical waste disposal.

C.The government highly valued protecting the natural resources on this planet.

D.Only a few Americans were familiar with environmental issues and practiced-recycling.

2It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ________.

A.Nelson convinced the federal government that the planet was at risk.

B.Nelson organized the modern environmental movement all by himself.

C.The Earth Day successfully aroused the public’s interest in environmental issues.

D.The electric power supply had been cut off due to numerous telephone inquiries poured in.

3The EPA was set up to_______.

A.collect public opinions. B.kick off the environmental decade.

C.change public attitudes. D.protect human beings and nature.

4What do you think the author will talk about later?

A.Earth Day celebrations have grown and spread around the globe.

B.EPA protect human health and our natural environment.

C.The environmental laws come into effect.

    D.Senator Nelson’s remarkable achievements.
