二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The researchers found that more than half of the decline in the Colorado River’s flow is connected to increasing temperatures, and as warming continues, they say the risk of “severe water shortages” for the millions that rely on it is expected to-grow.

The study also examined the impact that action to control pollution of heat-trapping gases could have on the river’s water supply. Some decrease in the flow is likely no matter what actions are taken, but without any cuts to emissions, the river’s discharge(流量)could shrink by between 19% and 31% by the middle of this century.

The Colorado River starts high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. On its route, this river supplies major cities like Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego, as well as farms in the US and Mexico that grow the vegetables that feed, millions around the world. It supports around $1 trillion of economic activity each year.

Global warming is reducing the snowpack that feeds the river. As temperatures increase, snow cover in the region is declining, meaning less energy from the sun is reflected back into space and more warms the ground as heat. The river’s flow has also been cut down by a severe drought during the last two decades, leaving its two main reservoirs-Lake Powell and Lake Mead -barely half full.

Udall, a senior climate scientist at Colorado State University, says these new findings show that the only way to save the river is by addressing the root cause of the problem: climate change. “The science is crystal clear we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately,” he says. “We now have the technologies, the policies and favorable economics to accomplish greenhouse gas reductions. What we lack is the will.”

【1】With cutting emissions, the river flow would reduce by ______.

    A.less than 19%

    B.about 30%

    C.over 19%

    D.between 19% and 31%

【2】What does the author intend to tell us about the Colorado River in paragraph 3?

    A.It is a long river.

    B.It is very important.

    C.It makes adequate electricity.

D.It flows through more than two countries.

【3】Which is one of the effects of the reduction of the snow cover?

    A.The weather becomes drier.

    B.The river gets more water.

    C.The ground gets more heat.

    D.Droughts break out frequently.

【4】What prevents people reducing greenhouse gas emissions according to Udall?

    A.Lack of will.

    B.Lack of cooperation.

    C.Backward economy.

    D.Technology unavoidable

  • 22、Warley Woods Community (社区) Trust

Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!

Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising events on Saturday, 17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary. It is indeed a long way 80 miles. The more people that you can get sponsor you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. More information is available at our website.

The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches and an oak last week. This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitiker, whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents. Thanks to everyone who took part.

There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please call Viv Cole at the office. This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund.

There was a huge response to the Forest Schools activities held at half term. These will be held again during the Easter holidays on the following dates: 4th April from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for over 8s. On 12th April form 10 a.m. to 12 noon, there will be a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for the under 8s. All these must be booked in advance.

Finally, don’t forget the Easter Egg Roll on Bank Holiday, 9th April, staring at 11 a.m. Bring your own hard-boiled and decorated egg to roll down the hill in the woods. The first past the finishing line will win a large chocolate egg! This year, due to popular demand, there will also be an Adults’ Easter Egg Roll following the children’s competition.

  • 23、   Just as a hungry brain craves (渴望) food, a lonely brain craves people. A new brain study demonstrates this. After being left alone, it shows people's brains would be activated at the sight of other people. The action was in the same brain region that speeds up when a hungry person sees food.

Livia Tomova, a neuroscientist, who studies how the brain produces mental activities, and her colleagues began this study. They recruited (招募) 40 people. On one day, the participants had to fast—not eat anything at all—for 10 hours. On another day, the same people were placed in a room for 10 hours. They couldn't see anyone. No friends, no family and no social media. They weren't even allowed to check their email. After both days, Tomova and her colleagues put the people in a MRI machine. It shows activity in the brain by tracking how much blood is flowing to each region.

At the end of each day, the participants showed high activity in a brain area called the midbrain. The scientists were interested in two, small areas within it. Both areas produce dopamine, a chemical that is important in craving and rewards. The two areas activated when hungry participants saw pictures of tasty pizza or juicy hamburgers. After the volunteers had been isolated, those brain areas became active when they saw social activities they missed. It might be playing sports or chatting with friends.

The midbrain plays an important part in people's motivation to seek food or friends. In fact, it responds to food and social signals even when people aren't hungry or lonely. But hunger and loneliness increased the reactions and made people's responses specific to the thing they were missing. And the more hunger or isolation the volunteers said they were experiencing, the stronger the activity in this part of the brain. Tomova and her colleagues published their results November 23 in Nature Neuroscience.

【1】How does Tomova test out the result of the study?

    A.By stimulating desire.

    B.By controlling blood flow.

    C.By monitoring brain activity.

    D.By examining mental activities.

【2】What do we know about midbrain?

    A.It consists of two areas.

B.It helps motivate desire for food.

C.It stops working when people are full.

D.It decreases responses to lost friends.

【3】What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.A midbrain area.

    B.A social activity.

    C.A volunteer.

    D.A hamburger.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Dopamine—a Sure Sign of Age

    B.Midbrain—a Nest for the Thoughts

    C.Hunger Makes Mental Health Struggle

D.Loneliness Makes Our Brains Need People
