  • 21、Forgotten Password? Never Again!

Passwords should be complex and varied enough to be secure, yet still memorable. 【1】 No wonder so many people use the same password over and over again or simply write them all down!

A much better idea is to follow a system. 【2】 It’s good exercise for your brain and a valuable way to protect your identity online.

The following system uses letters, numbers and symbols, so it will please even the strictest website. First, choose a short quotation, one that no one would have any reason to associate with you. Pick out the initial letters——creating the first “building block” for your passwords. 【3】.

Next, choose a meaningful date again, one that can’t be guessed or easily researched. Maybe the year of a favourite holiday, 86 say. Then add a random element by picking any two keyboard symbols: for example, & and £.

Finally, organise these building blocks in any order you like. And strengthen the code further by making some of the letters lower case, and some upper: maybe 86&£PiAs. 【4】 And then add two or three extra letters each time, a few initials or abbreviations (缩写形式) to remind you of what this particular password is for. For example, you might use BT for your phone account, or CC for the camera club forum. So the final password for your BBC account could be: BBC86&£PiAs.

【5】 But each password ends up being complex and unique, helping to protect your identity and giving your memory a cracking workout every time.

A.Start using it as the basis for every new password you set.

B.With a system like this, you’ve got a basic method to follow.

C.But with so many to keep track of, this can be hard to achieve.

D.So, if you chose, “Play it again, Sam”, you’d have the letters PIAS.

E.Spend a little time getting to know how to remember your passwords.

F.It is not difficult to memorize your passwords once you get the hang of it.

G.You save time at the setting stage, and have a clear pattern for your memory to follow.

  • 22、   It was a fine day. Jeffrey Del Monte was driving With his friend late Friday afternoon along the beach near Ramp 49 in Friso when they heard the screams of children. They surveyed the water trying to locate the screams and, two young girls were spotted apparently struggling while being swept out in a rip current(激流).

Del Monte then swam out into the ocean and helped one of the girls who were caught in the rip current, passing her to his friend for the lengthy swim back to shore. He then went back to search for the second girl and found her in great pain before he swam back to shore, bringing the child to the beach from nearly 100 yards out.

After both girls were safe on the beach, Del Monte and his friend attended to them until Dare County Emergency Medical Services and a Cape Hatteras National Seashore Ranger arrived on the scene. The children's parents also arrived and expressed their thanks to Del Monte and his friend.

“Jeffrey Del Monte's heroic, selfless and quick actions were key to saving these two girls from a very dangerous situation,"  National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent David Hallac said in a statement. "His courage and expertise allowed him to perform this successful ocean rescue. "

Park officials said the incident was a reminder of how quickly ocean conditions could change, even on what appeared to be a perfect clay.

“A perfect clay on the beach doesn't always mean that it's a perfect day in the ocean, so it is important that all visitors check the beach forecast for danger and rip currents before heading to the beach and always use something that floats when in the water. If individuals do find themselves caught in rip currents, please don't swim against the currents, instead swimming out of the currents and then to shore," David Hallac said.

【1】Why did Del Monte hand the first rescued girl to his friend?

A.To go to seek for the other struggling girl.

B.To give his friend a chance to be praised.

【2】What did Del Monte and his friend do after they saved the girls?

A.They took them to hospital quickly.

B.They looked after them on the beach.

C.They drove them back to their parents.

D.They blamed them for taking the risks.

【3】What is David Hallac's  attitude towards Del Monte?

    A.Worried,

    B.Envious.

    C.Appreciative.

    D.Grateful.

    A.Going swimming with others.

    B.Avoiding floating in the water.

    C.Swimming against the currents.

    D.Preparing well for beach trips.

  • 23、   The summer before my 10th birthday my father moved our family of nine kids to a farm. We had always lived in a small city, in the house my dad had gotten from my grandparents, who had wanted fresh air, green food and lots of room for their children but failed. My father held the same will. He’d worked multiple jobs and saved for many years... and could finally afford a place in the countryside. Now a minor concern: the house had no running water or electricity. But there were 150 acres to run around in.

That first year my dad put in electricity, because my mom simply announced, “I won’t have oil lamps with children running around!” Indoor plumbing(管道系统) had to wait another year. Different friends, who my dad knew from work, asked if he’d take their large dogs who couldn’t run free in the city. So we all now played with a big orange-brown boxer and a sporty German Shorthaired Pointer, who we named Billy and Molly.

Minimalism was our goal, and also our only choice. Absolutely our clothes were hand-me-downs. Bananas and oranges were rare “imported” fruit we’d seen at holiday. We felt we were younger than peers (同龄人) -there was ONE birthday party a year! We’d take turns…once every 9 years a child would have his/her own party!

While money was so scarce, we had joy to hand all the time. My mother was always singing, yelling, or hugging. And she told us we owned plenty! To this day, each of us remembers those years as an abundance of things, laughter, arguing, making peace, and playing together! Every challenge was a game to defeat, and any failure was a chance to learn there.

【1】Why did the author’s father move their family to a farm?

A.To carry out the wish of his parents.

B.To start a brand new life in a luxury house.

C.To improve the children’s living environment.

D.To get rid of the heavy workload in the city.

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.There was no electricity in their rooms.

B.Two dogs became part of the author’s life.

    C.The author’s mother had a sharp tongue.

D.Their rural life became the envy of friends.

【3】What is the author’s tone in paragraph 3?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Upset.

    C.Amazed.

    D.Amusing.

【4】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “scarce” in the last paragraph?

    A.Practical.

    B.Accurate.

    C.Tight.

    D.Essential.

  • 24、According to Jim Coan, a psychologist from the University of Virginia, holding hands with someone you trust can have a positive effect on your health. Why? Researchers have shown in their studies that the simple act of touch can reduce stress and even lower heart rate.

In a study, Jim and his colleagues brought couples into the lab, and then put one of them in an fMRI machine to scan the activity in their brains. While scanning them, the participants looked at a screen, and on a series of tests, they either saw a green circle or a red “X”. A green circle meant that the test would end shortly and nothing else would happen. A red “X” meant that in a few seconds, there was a chance that they would receive a mild electric shock on their leg. The shock wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t exactly comfortable either.

During some of these tests, participants were in the fMRI scanner alone; during others, a researcher came in and held their hand; and on a final set of tests, their romantic partner came in and held their hand. Jim and colleagues found that when participants thought they might be getting a shock, they had a lower stress response in their brains when holding their romantic partner’s hand than in the other two conditions. And the happier the couples said they were in their relationships, the more the romantic partner’s hand lessened (减弱) the brain’s response to the shock. This study suggests that when we’re stressed, holding a loved one’s hand can reduce that stress.

The research also suggests that touch has immediate and positive effects on babies. Skin-to-skin contact can reduce crying, stress, and improve sleep. These effects can be long-lasting: adults, held a lot when they were babies, are the most likely to be healthy and well-adjusted — in fact, the more they were carried in babyhood, the better they adjust in adulthood.

【1】How would a participant probably feel when seeing a red “X”?

    A.Nervous.

    B.Excited.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Painful.

【2】Why did researchers do sets of tests in the study?

A.To make sure the study results are correct.

B.To compare brain activities in different cases.

C.To test the relationships between couples.

D.To check the functions of the fMRI scanner.

【3】According to the last paragraph, what may the writer agree with?

A.Babies should be held and carried as much as possible.

B.Babies’ problems can be solved mainly by touching.

C.The effects that touching has on babies don’t last long.

D.Adults who were not held as babies can’t adjust to society.

【4】Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Touch Improves Brain Function

    B.Touch Happens Everywhere

    C.Touch Helps Form Good Habits

    D.Touch Makes a Big Difference

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jennie Grant lay on a cot (小床)   near the window. She had been lying in that same place for many weeks. One of her legs was shorter than the other, and the doctor had fastened a heavy weight to it in order to make it grow. But she must be still all the time.

Every morning before her father went to work, he moved her cot close to the window so she could look out. There was not much to see, for the buildings were high. But she loved to watch the swallows against the sky, and there was a flock of doves that often alighted (飞落) on the roof across the way. Still she became very tired with nothing to do and no one to play with.

One day Mrs. Brightly came to see if she could help her. On the way home, she was busy thinking about Jennie. Suddenly she said to herself, “I know what I’ll do. There are my two little sisters who have plenty of money and hardly ever think of anyone but themselves, and there are some other little neighbors. We will have a little ‘Sunshine Band’ and make her happy, and the children will enjoy doing something for someone who needs help. They will find that ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

She wrote notes to the girls, asking them to come to her house Monday afternoon. Then she told them the plan. They decided to fill a pretty basket to stand by Jennie’s bed, and took it to her on her birthday. Everything was to be put in packages, so her pleasure would last a long time, and everything was to be something for Jennie to do. Week after week they met and worked on the articles for the basket. They enjoyed it so much that they could hardly wait for Jennie’s birthday to come.
