二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In a touching story, a family was shocked to find that a stranger had secretly paid for more than half of their Christmas gifts.

When Ayers went to make a payment toward the $283 balance for her family’s Christmas gifts at Walmart, her money was refused. According to a Walmart employee, a woman had paid a part of Ayers’ bill after seeing her shopping in the store. The unknown woman also left Ayers a touching note, which left the mother of two in tears.

Ayers, whose sons are 11 and 3, says the stranger’s great generosity came at the perfect time for her family. Before the anonymous payment was made, Ayers had worried she would not be able to get her kids’ toys in time for Christmas.

Ayers is still looking for the woman who helped pay for their Christmas gifts for her kids. She took a picture of her receipt with the headline: This stranger paid 4 gifts for us. I wish I could thank her for helping give our kids a Merry Christmas!

For thousands of families like Ayers’, feeling this financial pressure around Christmastime is nothing new. These families who still have a roof over their heads and food on their tables often slip through the cracks they can afford all the necessities, but the “extras” are harder to come by. Considering that Americans are estimated to spend $882 on Christmas gifts this year, it makes sense that a family with a few financial problems would have a hard time filling the stockings for their kids.

Realizing how common this Christmas problem really is makes Ayers’ story even more special. These random acts of kindness around the holidays, often from nameless strangers, can determine what a family’s Christmas looks like. Christmas may not be all about the material stuff, but for families, and especially for kids, it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

【1】Why did the Walmart employee refuse Ayers’ money?

    A. She was too poor to afford it.

    B. Her money was not enough.

    C. Someone had paid for her.

    D. The charismas gifts were free.

【2】Why is Ayers still looking for the nameless woman?

    A. To say thanks to her.

    B. To pay her money back.

    C. To praise her online.

    D. To make friends with her.

【3】 Which of the following best describes families like Ayers’?

    A. They value Christmas very much.

    B. They try their best to buy kids gifts.

    C. They hate to spend Christmas.

    D. They live from hand to mouth.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the acts of kindness?

  • 24、The topic “slash youth”,   referring to those refusing to be defined or bound by just one personal identity and choosing to undertake multiple careers, has fueled heated debate on social media. On Douban, a Chinese social networking platform, the topic has attracted about 11,000posts and has been viewed over 400 million times. China’s young people are keen to share their slash youth stories online, presenting themselves as multiple and sometimes distinct identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and musician.

Xing Eryang, a 31-year-old female resident in Beijing, founded the Douban topic in 2021.While staying diligent about her daytime work, she is developing her hobbies, including stand-up comedy and vlogging, into secondary careers during her spare time. And she is amazed to find her “slash life” philosophy followed by so many of her peers.

Weiheng, a 26-year-old woman in Guangzhou, and Tang Yuhan, a 27-year-old man in Xuancheng city, Anhui province, are both participants in the topic, with their stories earning thousands of likes so far. The two are both musicians in their spare time, even though they are thousands of miles apart and have different jobs in media and finance. Their passion for music has grown since college and they didn’t abandon their enthusiasm, even after entering the workplace.

Their reaction showed the gap between the young and former generations. “My parents used to say,   ‘music cannot earn you money’,   so the band thing was regarded as a waste of time. However,   we want to pursue whatever we love and are willing to pay for it.” says Weiheng.

“The ‘slash life’ mania(狂热)shows that, along with China’s economic development, our society is becoming more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” says Shi Yanrong, an   associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to practice a carpe diem(活在当下)philosophy and create their own identities.”

【1】What are “slash youth” more likely to do?

    A.Create a topic on Douban.

    B.Take diverse occupations.

    C.Become a stand-up comedian.

    D.Share their own stories online.

【2】Which of the following amazes Xing Eryang?

    A.Other young people’s positive response.

    B.Hobbies developed while working.

    C.The growing social networking platform.

D.Thousands of likes earned on Douban.

【3】What did Weiheng and Tang Yuhan do to pursue their musical career?

A.They sent their stories online to gain more funds.

B.They shared similar interests in both their hobbies and jobs.

C.They never lost passion for music even if they had to quit college.

D.They stuck with their dream despite the older generation’s opinion.

【4】According to Shi Yanrong, what is our society’s attitude to the “slash life”?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Unfavorable.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 26、阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

As many as one in seven recent graduates in Britain may have cheated by using essay mils (论文工坊) during the last four years, according to a recent study. Essay mills, also known as “constrict cheating”, refers to companies offering essay-writing services for a fee which is hard to-spot since the essays are written by humans or even tailored. Some British universities have seen' decline in transitional plagiarism (剿窃) but this is now being replaced by constrict cheating, figures show.

Experts have warned that essay mills have become more common, not only in Britain, but also across the world in recent years, with labor being outsourced to unemployed university graduates in counties like Kenya, India and Pakistan. Dr. Irene, academician manager at Coventry University and vice president European Network for Academic Integrity, said these figures are just the tip of the iceberg since so many instances go unnoticed. She added that students are being “bombarded (轰炸)” with advertisements for essay mills on social media as well as on campus.
