二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Five years ago, Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.

Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.

The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.

Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.

With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.

The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

1What can we learn about African penguins?

A.They are very large in number. B.They are dangerous species.

C.They are beautiful when young. D.They are attractive to visitors.

2Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?

A.The ACT Group. B.Dr. Jen Flower.

    C.Kelly Matis. D.Sue Prince

3What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group’s help?

A.They reached school on time. B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.

C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple. D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.

4What is the best title for this text?

A.The development of 3D printing B.A penguin benefiting from high-tech

C.An effort to put science into practice D.A software that can design

  • 22、   School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.

Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.

City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged and boost academics. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.

For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

A.To provide a creative way of learning.

    B.To-promote teachers1 teaching skills.

C.To get students interested in science.

D.To invite students to care for plants.

【3】What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms?

    A.Its strategies.

    B.Its outcomes.

    C.Its operations.

    D.Its participants.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers

B.Happy Holiday, Sweet memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest

D.Healthy Eaters, Strong Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids

  • 23、   More than one in five species of maple trees faces extinction, a shocking new report has revealed.

The trees are experiencing a vast decline in habitat, due to urban development, timber harvesting, and agricultural expansion. “Time is running out for the world’s biodiversity,” said Douglas Justice, associate director at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden. “Every recent survey of plants and animals in the wild points to this.” He continued, “This is happening nearly everywhere that rarer maples exist. And because of climate change, the narrow habitats that support species at the tops of mountains are quickly disappearing.”

The trees can be found in sub-tropical and tropical regions, as far south as Indonesia. The only species found in the UK, the field maple is not under threat. Not only are the trees a popular ornamental feature in parks and public spaces, but also they are a key part of the natural ecosystem in woodlands, as well as being an important timber crop in several countries.

China is home to the largest proportion of maples with 92 species. It has seen a number of trees become endangered due to urban expansion. Some 14 of the 23 maple trees at risk of extinction in the country are only found in China and have small populations and limited geographical ranges. “We still have an opportunity to save species from disappearance, but it will take expertise, resources and the cooperative efforts by the world’s botanical gardens to make it work,” Justice added.

One species in Mexico, the Acer binzayedii, is in “desperate need of conversation” despite only being discovered in 2017. “It is at risk from climate change in its cloud forest habitat and threatened by grazing, logging, and forest fires,” the report adds. The report recommends developing conversation plans, monitoring species currently not at risk to ensure populations are maintained, and adding those missing maple species to seed banks and the like.

BGCI(Botanic Gardens Conversation International)is now establishing a conversation program to address the conservation needs of maple species. Maple specialists will work together to develop comprehensive strategies to manage and deliver conservation action points for the species.

【1】What is the major reason for maple trees’ extinction?

    A.A lack of scientific research.

B.The rarity of the new species.

    C.The losses of their habitats.

    D.Problems with the distribution.

【2】What’s Justice’s attitude to saving maple trees?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Reserved.

    D.Negative.

【3】What are the last two paragraphs intended to tell us?

A.There is no guarantee of maintaining the tree populations.

B.It can never be too late to join hands to protect the species.

C.All maple trees of the species are on the edge of extinction.

D.Effective measures should be taken to conserve maple trees

【4】What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.Time is running out for maple trees.

B.Maple trees are vital to the ecosystem.

C.Maple trees will stand tall in nature.

D.Climate change puts maple trees at risk.

  • 24、   For all its drawbacks, aging brings a benefit: social relationships generally improve. Older individuals have fewer but closer friendships, avoid conflicts, and are more optimistic compared with younger adults. Now, 20 years of data on chimpanzees suggest they, too, develop more meaningful friendships as they age.

“The finding challenges a long-standing assumption that humans mellow (成熟) with age because we are aware of our approaching death.” said Zarin Machanda, a professor at Tufts University. But finding the same pattern in chimps suggests a simpler explanation: It could be an evolved trait found in a wider range of species. Zarin and her colleagues gathered data from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project, which has tracked wild chimpanzee behavior in Uganda’s Kibale National Park since 1987. Because chimps are socially similar to humans — they live in large groups and engage in both cooperative and antagonistic (敌对的) relationships throughout their lives — they serve as an ideal test group for studying changes in social behavior. The researchers zeroed in on the males, who had more purely peer-to-peer relationships than females.

Combing through 21 years of behavioral logs on 21 chimps aged 15 through 58, the researchers found that older males (aged 35 and up) had more mutual friendships than younger ones. Older “friends” would sit together and groom one another on a regular basis, whereas younger chimps were more likely to engage in one-sided relationships, in which they groomed preferred elders who rarely returned the favor. As males age and fall in rank, they stop competing for dominance and “tend to give up”. Forming these cooperative relationships with peers could help older males maintain their status, helping them fend off challenges by younger and fitter chimps.

The team are eager to see whether other chimpanzee groups—and female chimpanzees—also experience this mellowing with age. Machanda says the theory could also be tested in other long-lived social species. Next, however, the team will take a deeper look at how social bonds might benefit aging chimps - and whether the same mechanisms could be at work in humans. “There is a lot more to learn,” Machanda says.

    【1】The author writes Paragraph 1 to ________

A.introduce the topic about the finding on chimps.

B.compare chimps with humans in social behaviors.

C.show that humans mature as they age is a mere misunderstanding.

D.stress that aging is very terrifying not only for humans but also for animals.

【2】Why did Machanda and her team choose chimpanzee as the test group of their study?

A.Because chimps look like humans in so many ways.

B.Because chimps are easy to track down in the wild.

C.Because chimps bear resemblance to humans in social behaviors.

D.Because chimps live in large groups together throughout their lives.

【3】What do we know about the findings?

A.It took the researchers 21 years to study the elderly chimps.

B.Older males exhibit mutual friendship among the group.

C.Younger males prefer to groom the elders because they respect them.

D.Elderly chimps will continue to fight to maintain their status as they age.

【4】Which of the following might Machanda agree with?

A.There’s no need to study the female chimpanzees for the theory.

B.It would be better to test other species who live a short life as well.

C.They have learned fairly enough about how aging affects animal behaviors.

D.The study on aging chimps would help better understand human interactions.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I started karate (空手道) class a few years ago, I didn’t know a single person. I felt ashamed of having no idea how to do any of the moves. Even though I liked the learning part, I did not like the feeling-worse-than-everyone part!

But one day after class while I was putting my shoes on, a girl named Abigail said, “That last kick we practiced is so hard for me, and you’re so good at it.”

“You must have confused me with someone else,” I replied. “I’m not good at any of it.”

“In that case, I’m in trouble,” she joked, “because you’re the one I stand behind and copy in class.”

    I laughed, “Seriously?”

“Seriously!” she laughed, too. After that, we became great friends. However, a few months later when Abigail’s mom got a job in a different state and she had to move away, I was rather sad. I had a tough time dragging myself to karate for a while after that I missed Abigail so much.

Then, a girl named Ava joined my class. She was always quiet. Until one day we finally had a conversation.

“It must be weird (怪异的) being the new one in class.” I said.

“So weird!” said Ava. “You do things really differently than we did at my old dojo (柔道馆).”

I suddenly realized she’d been silent only because she was new. We started talking more, and we got along so well that we started hanging out after class. Then, almost a year later, guess who showed up at karate.

“This is so cool.” I said, giving Abigail a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”

“My mom’s job in New York didn’t work out,” she explained. “So we got to move back.”

“That’s the best news ever!” I said. “You have to meet my dear friend Ava. And Ava, meet my dear friend Abigail.”

I put my arms around their shoulders. Feeling very excited, I told them I hoped we could get along well and be close friends, while Abigail and Ava stared at each other with some hesitation and an uncertain smile.
