Count the birds and the bees
Get closer to nature by becoming a citizen scientist. You could be counting birds, butterflies, insects and flowers. 【1】 They are fun group activities, and your data can help scientists better understand the impact of human behaviour on natural habitats.
Share leftovers in a community fridge
The average UK family wastes eight meals weekly, and supermarkets frequently send surplus(过剩的) produce to landfill sites. Fridges in the community are a good solution to avoiding food waste by redistributing leftovers for free.【2】
Host a climate and nature discussion
【3】 Or they may ignore the issues completely. Hosting a local discussion can allow space for reflection, debate, ideas and collaboration to take action on global issues at a local level.
Set up a library of things

22、 You may want to bring honey the next time you have a cold, a study says. That's because honey has been shown to provide better cough relief than some over-the-counter drugs, Oxford University researchers said in findings published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.
“Honey is more effective than usual care choices for improving upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, particularly reducing cough frequency and cough severity,” the scientists said in the findings.
Researchers said they reviewed 14 past studies about upper respiratory tract infections, also known as common colds. Symptoms can include runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and coughing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).
Four of the studies examined comparisons between honey and diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that can be used to relieve coughs, according to the U. S. government. It's sold at U. S. drugstores under several brand names and is combined with other ingredientsin some cold medicines.
In their findings, Oxford scientists said honey was “significantly better than” diphenhydramine at improving cough symptoms. The results came from studies that included 385 participants, data show. But honey was “not significantly better” at cough relief when compared to another class of medicines, called dextromethorphan, according to a review of two studies with a combined 137 patients. Dextromethorphan is used to suppress coughs.
Anyone sick with a cold should talk to a druggist or doctor about the best medicines for them, according to health officials. “Over-the-counter medicines may provide temporary relief of symptoms, but they will no cure your illness,” the CDC said on its website.
The CDC includes honey on its list of possible ways to suppress coughs. Other tips for feeling better from a cold include getting enough rest, breathing in steam and using saline spray, according to the CDC.

23、If a single word can describe our daily life during those first three years, it is “scrounge”(讨要). Every waking moment we were concentrating on how the hell we would be able to save up enough coins to do whatever it was we had to do. Even the simplest decision must be inspected by the ever alert budget committee of your mind.
“Hey, Oliver, let’s go to see Becket tonight.”
“Listen, it’s three bucks.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean a buck fifty for you and a buck fifty for me.”
“Does that mean yes or no?”
“Neither. It just means three bucks.”
Our honeymoon was spent on a yacht and with twenty-one children. That is, I sailed from 7 o’clock in the morning till whenever my passengers had enough, and Jenny was a children’s counselor. It was a place called the Pequod Boat Club in Dennis Port——an establishment that included a large hotel, a marina and several dozen houses for rent. In one of the tinier bungalows (平房), I have nailed an imaginary plaque (匾牌): “Oliver and Jenny slept here”. I think it’s a tribute (致敬) to us both that after a long day of being kind to our customers, for we were largely dependent on their tips for our income, Jenny and I were nonetheless kind to each other: I simply say “kind”, because I lack the vocabulary to describe what loving and being loved by Jennifer Cavilleri is like. Sorry, I mean Jennifer Barrett.
Before leaving for the Cape, we found a cheap apartment in North Cambridge, which was, as Jenny described it, “in the state of disrepair”. It had originally been a two-family structure, now changed into four apartments, overpriced even at its “cheap” rental. But what the hell can graduate students do? It’s a seller’s market.
【1】What can we learn from the conversation between Oliver and Jenny?
A.Neither of them wanted to see Becket.
B.They didn’t have three bucks.
C.Jenny was wasting money.
D.Oliver was an economical man.
【2】Why were Oliver and Jenny friendly to customers?
A.They were both counselors for children.
B.They needed to get tips from customers.
C.They didn’t have enough room to live in.
D.That was the rule on the yacht.
【3】What does Jennifer imply about their apartment by saying “in the state of disrepair”?
A.It was not cheap.
B.It was not distant.
C.It was not decent.
D.It was not luxurious.
【4】Which might be the best title of the passage?
A.A couple’s debt repayment process
B.A couple’s miserable life
C.A couple’s honeymoon trip
D.A couple’s holiday on a yacht
24、New methods have allowed researchers and scientists to find a way to reduce heat from buildings by about 30%. This new “green” solution is quite literally green as it involves fitting a living wall, according to a new research.
To see what effects renewing a living wall on an existing building using fabric and pockets to stick soil and plants onto the walls would have on the environment, the scientists decided to test it out on a building at a university in the UK, which was originally built in the 1970’s. As a control, part of the building was not fitted with the living wall. Both of the parts of the building were west-facing and the test was conducted over 5 weeks. What was found was that the part with the living wall lost 31.4% less heat as compared to the side without it. It also had a more stable temperature as the day progressed, so it took less energy to heat.
In the UK, approximately 57% buildings were built before 1964. They have caused 17% of greenhouse emission (排放), about 60% of which comes from space heating. If people could reduce heat loss from older buildings by 30%, a huge part of that could be removed, while regulations have changed more recently to improve the thermal performance of new constructions, it is the existing buildings that require the most energy to heat and are a significant contributor to carbon emissions. It is, therefore, essential that people begin to improve the thermal performance of these existing buildings if the UK is to reach its target of net zero carbon emission by 2050, and help to reduce the possibility of fuel poverty (贫困) from rising energy prices.
The new research suggests living walls can also provide significant energy savings to help reduce the carbon footprint of existing buildings. Perfecting these living wall systems, however, is now needed to help increase the environmental benefits and reduce some of the sustainability costs.
【1】What did the researchers find about the living wall in the test?
A.It protected the building well.
B.It reduced the waste of some fuels.
C.It reduced the heat loss of the building.
D.It made the building more comfortable.
【2】What measure should the UK take to reach its target of carbon emission?
A.Pulling down the older buildings.
B.Controlling the rising prices of fuels.
C.Adding more living walls on new buildings.
D.Reducing the fuel consumed by the older buildings.
【3】What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The disadvantages of old buildings.
B.The contributors to greenhouse emission.
C.The methods of reducing energy consumption.
D.The importance of reducing heat loss from buildings.
【4】What do we know about living walls from the text?
A.They remain to be improved to fimction perfectly.
B.They are aimed to reduce the energy price in the UK.
C.They become the most effective way to save energy.
D.They reduce 17% of greenhouse emissions in the UK.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
This is a story about a book that just kept selling, catching publishers, booksellers and even its author off guard. The book is Sapiens, by the Israeli academic Yuval Noah Harari, published in the UK in September 2014.It is a recondite(深奥的) work of evolutionary history charting the development of humankind through a scholarly examination of our ability to cooperate as a species.
Sapiens sold well on publication, particularly when it came out in paperback in the summer of 2015.What is remarkable about it, though, is that it's still selling in vast numbers. Sapiens has sold a further half million copies, establishing itself firmly at the top of the bestseller lists. The book's wild success is symptomatic of a broader trend in our book-buying habits: a surge in the popularity of intelligent, challenging nonfiction, often books that are several years old.
It was trade publication, the Booksellers, that first noted the rise of what is called the “brainy backlist”, it also highlighted a concomitant fall in the sales of the books that had been such a staple of publishers' catalogues-celebrity biographies. We are turning away from exciting but disposable stories of fame towards more serious, thoughtful, quiet books that help us understand our place in the world. Mark Richards, publisher at John Murray Prese, see the return to serious works of nonfiction as a response to the spirit of the age, “People have a hunger both for information and facts, and for nuanced(有细微差别的) exploration of issues, of a sort that books are in a prime position to provide.” he says.
In the end, the story of Sapiens is about a book becoming part of a national conversation. At a time when politics is more furious and fragmented than ever, when technology is colonizing our everyday existence.
