二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Although we spend one-third of our lives in bed, we hardly ever think about beds. While we may consider them little more than a mattress(床垫), pillow and blanket, they in fact have a fascinating history.

The first beds were hollows(坑洼) dug in cave floors by our African ancestors around 77,000 years ago. The basic idea of the bed and its structure have remained the same for thousands of years. Malta and Egypt were using raised frames with mattresses 5,000 years ago, according to Brian Fagan, the author of What We did in Bed. Early Egyptian beds consisted of wooden frames with legs and a leather sleeping platform. The mattress was little more than a sack(袋子) with grass, straw and hay in it. In Mongolia and China, heated stone platforms called kang were used in inns as early as 5000 BC.

The basic idea of who slept in the bed, however, has changed a lot through the years. Many family members or friends sleeping together in a single bed used to be completely normal for much of human history. Travelers would not expect privacy at inns. In fact, they had to share a bed with complete strangers. The greatest example of this was the Great Bed of Ware, a huge bed built in 1590 for an English inn. “A total of 52 people—are said to have spent a night in the Great Bed in 1689,” according to Fagan.

Throughout the 19th century, beds gradually became a private space. Rapid urbanization during the Industrial Revolution sped up this process as compact row houses were built with small rooms, each for a different purpose, including sleeping. So the next time you head to bed, be thankful you have your own.

  • 22、Earlier this month, two rock climbers achieved what many thought impossible: They climbed up the 3,000-foot-high Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park without specialized equipment. Climbing without this equipment is called“free-climbing.”Until now, no one had free-climbed to the top of the rock face, which is a part of the mountain EI Capitan.

El Capitan, which means“the captain”or“the chief”in Spanish, has always presented a challenge to climbers. But the Dawn Wall, on the mountains southeast face, is a particularly difficult route to the summit (顶峰). It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smooth. This makes free-climbing the rock face seem almost impossible.

About seven years ago, professional climber Tommy Caldwell spotted a possible route up the wall. It took years of planning and preparation, but this month, Caldwell, 36, and his friend Kevin Jorgeson, 30, finally make the climb.

Free climbers do use ropes and other basic safety equipment to catch them if they fall and Caldwell and Jorgeson fell often. Before starting their climb, they broke down their route into 32 sections. Each section was based on a rope length called a“pitch.”The rope was secured into the rock face to catch the climbers if they fell.

Caldwell and Jorgesons goal was to climb the Dawn Wall without returning to the ground. If they fell, they had to start that pitch all over again. The two men started climbing on December 27. They slept in hanging tents, and a team of friends brought them food each day.

The men had spent years rehearsing (排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch. They made it through the fist half of the climb relatively easily. But halfway up, Jorgeson ran into trouble. In one difficult spot, he fell each time he attempted to climb. After 10 days of trying, Jorgeson finally made it to the next pitch.

Getting through that troublesome pitch gave both climbers renewed energy. They finished the rest of the climb five days later, on January 14.

【1】What does Paragraph 2 mainly explain?

A.Why the Dawn Wall is a hard challenge.

    D.Imaginative but half-hearted.

  • 23、Tiny traces of protein remaining in the bones and teeth of ancient humans could soon transform scientists’ efforts to uncover the secrets of the evolution of our species. Researchers from the Francis Crick Institute and the Natural History Museum believe a new technique—known as proteomics—could allow them to identify the proteins from which our ancestors’ bodies were constructed and bring new insights into the past 2 million years of humanity’s history.

The consequences of the technology would mirror the impact of the recently developed technology of ancient DNA analysis which, over the past 20 years, has helped uncover dramatic secrets about humanity’s past. The development of proteomics follows scientists’ success in analysing DNA from ancient human fossils. But the analysis of ancient DNA has limitations. “DNA is fragile and rots fairly quickly, especially in warm conditions,” said Pontus Skoglund. “So it is mainly useful for studying fossils less than 100,000 years old and found in moderately cool or cold places.” So scientists have begun to look at other methods to study the biology of ancient humans and have turned to proteins as a key target.

Our bodies are made of proteins whose manufacture(生成) is controlled by our DNA and so, by uncovering their structure, insights can be gained into the make-up of ancient individuals. Crucially, proteins survive longer in warm conditions. However, there was a downside to the use of proteins, added Skoglund. “Proteins do not carry nearly as much information as DNA. They only contain about 1% of the maximum information we could get from a DNA sample. That means that we will need a lot to be able to generate enough data. That may not be easy.”

Nevertheless, proteomics has already produced early promising results. Studies have shown that collagen proteins (胶原蛋白) found in a piece of hominin jaw-bone at Baishiya Karst matches those of Denisovans. “This is the first hint (提示) at what a Denisovan might have looked like and suggests that proteomics has a lot to offer our understanding of human evolution,” Welker told the Observer last week.

【1】What’s the limitation of the ancient DAN analysis technology?

A.It has just been recently developed.

B.It is less effective than other methods.

C.DNA can’t survive long in warm conditions.

D.It can only be used to study fossils within 10,000 years.

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.DNA determines the generating of our proteins.

B.The use of proteins can’t help generate enough data.

C.Researchers have easy access to a lot of protein samples.

D.The structure of DNA can help understand the composition of humans.

【3】Which word best describes Welker’s attitude to Proteomics?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Skeptical.

    D.Negative.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A new method to study humans’ evolution.

B.The advantages and disadvantages of Proteomics.

C.A new technique to uncover the development of history.

D.Two different techniques to uncover the evolution of humans.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was February 21, the International Mother Language Day, a day to celebrate language and cultural diversity. At the end of the day, Mr. Brown gave us an assignment: “All of you are to make a presentation about your native language.” Max, whose family came from France and I, who was born in China, were chosen to be the first two presenters. However, both of us were at a loss, wondering what should be talked about. Needless to say, there were many questions about what he meant. What should be talked about? How many sentences are needed? What format? Do we need to write down everything?

On the way home from school. Max and I scratched (抓) our heads, trying to figure out the meaning of Mr. Brown’s assignment. At first, we thought he was just giving an assignment to get us back into the habit of homework. We also wondered if it had more to do with how we presented to our classmates. Eventually, we both decided we would impress Mr. Brown and the class with some unique answers.

The next day, Max started his presentation by asking the class a question: “Is café an English word?” Some of the students nodded while a few shook their heads. Max continued with a smile and told the class that “cafe” actually came from French. “As one of the most spoken languages in the whole world, French has a charm of its own!” Max said. He instructed the class as if he were a university professor: “It is said that about 45% of the modern English words came from French. ” After writing some common French words on the blackboard, he began to teach the class how to pronounce them. Everyone, including Mr. Brown, applauded when he was done, I clapped along, excited and nervous about my following presentation.

    注意:

    1. 写作词数应为150左右;
