二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Laurie Santos greeted her Yale University students with slips of paper that explained: No class today.

It was mid-semester (学期). With exams and papers coming, everyone was exhausted and stressed. There was one rule: They couldn’t use the one hour and a quarter of unexpected free time to study, and they had to just enjoy it. Nine students hugged her. Two burst into tears.

Santos, a professor of psychology, had planned to give a lecture about what researchers have learned about how important time is to happiness, but she created a special class on the psychology of living a joyful, meaningful life and she wanted the lessons to stick. All semester, she explained why we think the way we do. Then, she challenged students to use that knowledge to change their own lives.

On that spring afternoon, nearly a quarter of the undergraduate students were enjoying an unexpected break at the same time. No, not just enjoying it-really loving the gift they had been given. Skyler Robinson, a sophomore, had been confused for a moment by all the possibilities it opened up. He felt very, very happy. Then, he took a nap. “That nap,” he said, “was fantastic.”

Santos designed this class after she realized, as the head of a residential college at Yale, that many students were stressed out and unhappy, struggling through long days that seemed to her far more crushing (惨重的) and joyless than her own college years.

Santos said students were most skeptical of the idea that good grades aren’t essential to happiness. And when she joked she was going to teach them that by giving everyone “D”, she was flooded with calls from frightened students and parents. Santos told them she was creating a center for the good life at the college she leads at Yale. As for the good life, she told them they already know how to live it-they just have to practice and put in hard work.

So many students have told her the class changed their lives. “If you’re really grateful, show me that.” she told them. “Change the culture.”

1What did Santos ask her Yale students to do that day?

    A.Study for the coming exams.

B.Enjoy the free time in her class.

C.Apply their way of thinking to life.

    D.Realize the importance of time.

2What does Santos think of her Yale students?

A.They care nothing about grades but happiness.

B.They are stressed into a hopeless generation.

C.They are living a joyful and meaningful life.

D.They suffer great pressure from learning.

3How was Santos’ special class that day?

    A.Popular. B.Discouraging.

    C.Humorous. D.dull

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Yale has a special course about social life.

B.Yale teaches its students about good grades.

C.Yale has a course all about living happily.

D.Yale helps its students reduce learning pressure.

  • 22、Fritillaria plants can be easily spotted. The usually bright green plants often stand alone amid the rocks at the top of the Himalayan and Hengduan mountains in southwestern China — easy pickings for traditional Chinese medicine herbalists, who’ve ground the bulbs (鳞茎) of Fritillaria into a cough-treating powder for more than 2, 000 years. The demand for the bulbs is intense, since about 3,500 of them are needed to produce one kilogram of the powder, worth about $480.

But some Fritillaria are remarkably difficult to find, with leaves and stems that are barely distinguishable from the gray or brown rocky background. Surprisingly, the plants’ camouflage (伪装) seems to have evolved in response to people.

In wide open areas with little cover, like mountaintops, blending in can help the plants avoid hungry herbivores, says Yang Niu, a botanist at the Kunming Institute of Botany in China. But after five years of studying camouflage in Fritillaria, he did not spot any animals feeding on the plants. So Niu, his colleague Hang Sun and sensory ecologist Martin Stevens of the University of Exeter in England decided to see if humans might be driving the evolution of the plants’ camouflage.

During their research, local herbalists noted the total weight of the bulbs harvested each year from 2014 to 2019 at seven study sites. These records indicated contemporary harvesting pressure on the plants. In the meantime, the researchers assessed the ease of harvesting by recording how long it took to dig up bulbs at six of those sites. On some slopes, bulbs are easily dug up, but in others they can be buried under rocks. Both measures have revealed a striking pattern: The more harvested a site is, the better the color of a plant matches its background.

However, camouflage can present some challenges. Pollinators (花粉传播者) might have a harder time finding the camouflaged plants, and the gray and brown coloration could impair photosynthetic (光合) activity. Still, these Fritillaria show how adaptable the plants can be. The plants can better change their appearance than we might have expected.

【1】What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.The living environment of Fritillaria.

    B.The appearance of Fritillaria.

    C.The reasons for picking Fritillaria.

D.The history of traditional Chinese medicine.

【2】What do the researchers find during their research?

    A.Fritillaria usually exist under rocks.

B.Animals drive Fritillaria to hide themselves better.

C.Frequent human activities make it easier to spot Fritillaria.

D.Fritillaria camouflage themselves better where harvested more often.

【3】Which of the following statements is true according to the last paragraph?

A.All plants are poor at camouflaging.

B.Fritillaria are constantly changing how they look.

C.Camouflage can bring some side-effects to Fritillaria.

D.Fritillaria camouflaged to be gray which can promote growth.

【4】What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.The demand for the Fritillaria is intense.

B.Fritillaria are remarkably difficult to find.

C.Camouflage can present some challenges to the Fritillaria.

D.Human activities drive the evolution of the Fritillaria’s camouflage.

  • 23、In her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超过……分数) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, for that matter, teams of any kind.

That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment(PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers.

Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(暇疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”

One of the ironies(讽刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible. American kids’ performance on the field shows just how well they can do when expectations are high. It’s too bad that their test scores show the same thing.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, we know that _______.

    A. too much importance is placed on sports in America

    B. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schools

    C. American high schools complain about sports time

    D. PISA plays a very important role in America

【2】The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _______.

    A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lot

    B. high expectations push up American students’ academic performance

    C. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance

    D. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performance

【3】The purpose of this article is to _______.

    A. draw public attention to a weakness in American school tradition

    B. call on American schools to learn from the Polish model

    C. compare Polish schools with those in America

    D. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions

  • 24、   We all know a picky eater (挑食者) or two, or maybe you're the picky eater, avoiding food adventures at all costs, because you're convinced you'll hate whatever new and bad-looking food is put on your plate. But why is it that some people are picky eaters while others are willing to try pretty much anything that can be eaten?

There's no single explanation for the picky eating habit. Picky eaters are typically unwilling to try new foods, which can be the result of your DNA and the way you are treated and educated when you are young. Marcia Pelchat, Ph.D., a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia who specializes in food preferences in humans, tells China Daily, “A group in Finland looked at what we call food neophobia, which literally means 'fear of the new', and they found that there is some genetic basis for this.”

“Also, if you have parents who don't really like to try anything new, you will also be exposed to fewer new foods,” Pelchat says. The opposite is also true: Those who try new foods and have positive experiences are then more likely to try unfamiliar foods in the future.

People who are less adventurous may be more hesitant to try new foods. Trying anything new, food included, requires you to step outside of your comfort zone. If you're not very adventurous, you may have a tough time with this. People who seek new adventures or thrills might be more likely to experiment with food. “There is a thrill-seeking personality trait,” Pelchat says. “It's been shown, especially with spicy food, that there is some connection between trying new foods and thrill seeking,” she explains.

Most adult picky eaters start as child picky eaters. “It's normal for children to go through a picky stage when they're toddlers, maybe two or three years old, and that makes sense evolutionarily,” Pelchat says. But as we get older, if we continue to avoid new foods, pickiness can persist.

【1】What do we know about people with food neophobia?

A.They eat only a few kinds of food.

B.They avoid new or unfamiliar foods.

C.They are addicted to some kind of food.

D.They have preference for vegetable food.

【2】What does Pelchat mainly tell us in Paragraph 3?

A.Food neophobia can be influenced by surroundings.

B.Those who try new foods have a positive life attitude.

C.Parents should set a good example for their children.

D.Food neophobia is linked to poorer dietary quality.

【3】What would be a picky eater like?

    A.Less optimistic.

    B.Less creative.

    C.Less independent.

    D.Less adventurous.

【4】Which of the following shows the best structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of different flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.

I will never forget one day when I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.

It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.

“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”

“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”

My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.

“And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”

Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.
