22、In 2016, in an Illinois town called Cahokia, a woman was sent to prison just because she failed to tend her lawn (草坪). In 2019, a Florida man was fined $30,000 by the city of Dunedin for allowing his grass to grow more than 10 inches in height. These examples, while extreme, are not rare occurrence in America.
A study estimated that turf grasses (lawns, parks, athletic fields, etc) cover over 40 million acres in the continental U.S., an area larger than any crop area. And Americans spend as much as $60 billion a year maintaining these grasses. These impressive data are the result of Americans’ setting much store by these pieces of greenery for several centuries.
Centuries ago, only those with considerable wealth could own the resources needed to maintain these displays. In the modern world, lawns have gradually changed from the estates of the wealthy to the front yards of common people. Across America, millions of families now proudly present their grass to their neighbors and drivers by carefully weeding, watering, fertilizing and mowing these small-scale representations of the grounds.
With this context in mind, it’s easy to see well-tended lawns in America. People tend to use lawns to create an impression of order or to indicate a sense of personal success. The relative health and attractiveness of the grass in their yard becomes a barometer (晴雨表) for their life as whole.
However, with so many acres covered by the grass, the influence associated with lawn maintenance is more than just psychological. To begin, a lawn requires massive quantities of resources to sustain. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that lawns account for about half of homeowner’s water use, much of which is wasted. Additionally, Americans are reported to use 80 million pounds of chemicals on their lawns each year. The process of tending the lawn also contributes to air pollution.
These surprising data mean we need to question whether lawns provide us with enough benefit to justify their widespread existence.
【1】Why are the two lawn-related cases mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To explain the effectiveness of American laws
B.To show the significance of lawns in American society.
C.To stress Americans’ awareness of environmental protection.
D.To reveal the cost of maintaining lawns in Americans’ daily life.

A.Making full use of.
B.Facing the consequence of.
C.Attaching great importance to.
D.Shouldering the responsibility for.
【3】Why do Americans have a preference for well-tended lawns?
A.Because of the psychological function of lawns.
B.Because of the popularity of lawns in Americans’ life
C.Because of the purpose of placing barometers in lawns.
D.Because of the method of planting healthy and attractive lawns.
【4】What can we know about the lawns in the U.S. according to the passage?
A.They will be expanded to cover more lands.
B.They are of significant environmental concerns.
C.They will motivate people to be health-conscious.
D.They can promote the development of the chemical industry.
23、 Think of the many different ways you enjoy fish or other seafood: steaming fish ball soup, grilled salmon, boiled shrimp and more. Now think about not having this delicious food because of no more fish and seafood. You would likely miss them a lot, and not just you. Nearly half of the world’s population relies on seafood as a major source of protein.
Harvesting fish and other sea life isn’t bad for the ocean, but harvesting it faster than it can recover is. This is called overfishing, and the number of overfished wild stocks has tripled in the past 50 years. Overfishing affects not only a food source but many economies. Many businesses and jobs depend on fishing for their livelihoods. When fish stocks shrink, people lose their means of supporting themselves and their families. Worldwide, fishing is US $362 billion business. Over 4 million fishing boats sail the waters of the world. Many boats are becoming increasingly efficient, which increases overfishing.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, one third of the world’s fisheries are being pushed beyond their natural limits. Overfishing goes hand in hand with bycatch (误捕的鱼). This means unwanted sea life is captured along with the desired catch and is thrown away. Thus, billions of fish along with seabirds, sea turtles and millions of sharks are lost.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has been working with scientists, fisheries and seafood producers for over 20 years. They have developed standards promoting sustainable fishing. When fisheries meet MSC’s standards, the oceans and those who make a living from them are protected. Around 15 percent of wild-capture fisheries are now MSC certified. And Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPS) in many countries are working to increase that percentage.
What can you do? Look for MSC’s blue fish label, which appears on over 30,000 products and menus in almost 100 countries. Buying a product with this label means you’re supporting a fishery that is contributing to healthier oceans.
【1】Which of the following opinions will the author favor?
A.We need to develop more fish recipes.
B.Many people consider seafood as nutritious.
C.You can never eat fish and other seafood too much.
D.It’s great to treat your friends to tasty seafood.
【2】What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.Many people live by fishing.
B.Overfishing isn’t always bad for the ocean.
C.Fishing economies are picking up soon.
D.Many boats have no fish to catch.
【3】What measure has been taken concerning overfishing?
A.Bycatch is thrown back.
B.More investment is put in fisheries.
C.All the countries are called on to conserve the ocean.
D.Some requirements for green fishing are made.
【4】What's the author’s suggestion for readers?
A.Buying the seafood with MSC’s certification.
B.Looking for MSC’s blue fish label worldwide.
C.Making contributions to fishing in eco-friendly environment.
D.Predicting about the oceans and the fish for years to come.
24、Rainforests are disappearing at a surprisingly fast speed, largely due to human development over the past few centuries. Once covering 14% of land on Earth, rainforests now make up only 6%. Since 1947, the total area of rainforests has probably been reduced by more than half, to about 6.2 to 7.8 million square kilometers.
Many biologists expect rainforests will lose 5-10% of their species every ten years. Rapid deforestation could cause many important rainforest habitats to disappear completely in the next hundred years.
Such rapid habitat loss is due to the fact that 100 acres of rainforest are cleared every minute for agricultural and industrial development. In the Pacific Northwest’s rainforests, logging companies cut down trees for wood used in building while paper industries use the wood for pulp. In the Amazon rainforest, large agricultural industries clear large parts of forests for growing crops. In the Congo rainforest, roads and other infrastructure (基础建设) development have reduced habitat and cut off living areas for many rainforest species. Throughout both the Amazon and Congo, logging operations clear-cut to build roads or for other purposes. Some rainforests are threatened by large hydroelectric power projects. Development is encroaching on rainforest habitats from all sides.
Economic inequalities increase this rapid deforestation. Many rainforests are located in developing countries with economies based on natural resources. Wealthy nations drive need for products, and economic development increases energy use. These needs encourage local governments to develop rainforest at a slow speed. Poor people who live on or near these lands are also motivated to improve their lives by changing forests into farmland.
【1】What feeling does the author want to convey by listing figures?
A.Frustrated.
B.Disgusted.
C.Inspired.
D.Concerned.
【2】What caused the reduction of habitat for many rainforest species in Congo?
A.The demand for numerous products.
B.The motivation from local governments.
C.The construction of fundamental facilities.
D.The cooperation with developing countries.
【3】What does the underlined part “encroaching on” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Tearing up.
B.Relying on.
C.Holding back.
D.Benefiting from.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
