  • 21、   The powwow was just fantastic! I could never have imagined how colorful and impressive this morning would be. The dances find the clothes, which were decorated with eagle feathers, attracted me.

I had heard about the powwow dancing in our culture class at Rice University, so I wanted very much to see what the Native Americans would look like in their traditional clothes.

The opening dance was scheduled to start at 730 a. m. Since I didn't want to miss any dances, I arrived there on timehowever, the dancing began an hour late. How could I have forgotten that Native Americans have a different feeling for time, which I had learned in our class? I had intended to go back for my term survey paper as soon as the great one-and-a-half hour event was over!

First, they started to play music with their drums it was accompanied by their low voices. “Hamma hamma…”. The music was exactly the same as I had heard in the movies.

Then, the Native Americans gradually changed their clothes they wore their own extremely amazing clothes for the dances, with their hairstyles special and faces multicolored(多颜色的).

Finally, the competitions were started the participants danced in different groups. They swung their arms and moved their feet in special steps, always to the beat of the music.

After one hour and a half of enthusiastically enjoying them, I took a walk along the food stands to eat some special Native American fried bread and other snacks. And I left that wonderful place for my hotel, having stayed two hours longer than I had first planned to stay.

I will never forget this wonderful morning that gave me a little view into the culture of Native Americans.

  • 22、   If you’re looking for someone to make a realistic, three-dimensional (3D) portrait of your pet cat using felted wool, you’ll have a tough time finding someone better than Wakuneco, a Japanese artist who started creating needle felt art back in 2015. Using different colored wool, this artist creates life-like cat portraits. Just have a look at what she can do with a needle and wool thread.

Looking at some of the cat portraits created by the talented Japanese artist, it’s hard to believe they are made of felted wool and not taxidermy (动物标本剥制术) masterpieces. To achieve this level of realism, which translates as “frame cat”, Wakuneco spends hours on end poking wool with a needle to create solid layers that imitate cat fur, applying realistic glass eyes and finally adding the whiskers. After everything is just as she wants, the 3D portrait is framed and sent to the owner who ordered it.

Losing a beloved pet is never easy, but Wakuneco’s realistic cat portraits — made using photographs of real cats as a reference — help owners deal with their loss. And while not all of her customers are owners looking for something special to remember their pets, many of her portraits are ordered as a means of copying.

Wakuneco currently offers her amazing wool felting skills through Yahoo Auctions, but only to Japanese customers. However, after photos of her amazingly detailed portraits spread quickly online, she did express her intention to start taking international orders in the near future. In the meantime, you can admire her amazing creations on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and watch videos of the creative process on YouTube.

For more amazing felted wool artworks, check out the creations of Gardenia Miru and Terumi Ohta, two other very talented Japanese artists, as well as the felted wool animal portraits of Dani Ives.

【1】What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A.No one can do better than Wakuneco.

B.Wakuneco is too busy to be visited or invited.

C.It’s hard for you to get along well with Wakuneco.

D.You’ll find many other skillful persons like Wakuneco.

【2】What do we know about the 3D cat portraits?

A.They’re widely considered as taxidermy masterpieces.

B.Their eyes are made of felted wool in most cases.

C.They’re made by modeling the pictures of authentic cats.

D.Their fur is taken from animals no longer alive.

【3】What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

A.Dani Ives’s wool animal portraits are gaining in popularity.

B.Only the Japanese can buy Wakuneco’s artworks for the time being.

C.Wakuneco decided to show her creative process on Twitter.

D.Wakuneco is unsure about selling her artworks internationally.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

C.Needle Felting: An Art in Danger.

    D.Wakuneco’s Realistic 3D Cat Portraits.

  • 23、   Plastic is the workhorse material of the modern economy (经济). Lightweight and durable, it’s been used to make a vast number of products since its introduction over 100 years ago.

However, a study carried out by the World Economic Forum, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and McKinsey Company showed the status of the breakdown in the global plastic system. A full 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans.

The Ocean Cleanup, a start-up founded in 2013, is the brainchild of Boyan Slat, who came up with the idea for the company when he was just 17 years old. Since then, it’s received more than $2 million in funding(基金). The company plans to use a large array (列阵) that will be fixed to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. This will have arms that spread out over 100 km, getting all of the plastic garbage pushed into its nets. This is then collected by a 10,000-metre-cube container that will be emptied monthly.

Most recently, the Ocean Cleanup launched a team of explorers aboard a specially refitted C-130 Hercules aircraft heavily loaded with specialized sensor equipment. It discovered that the problem was worse than expected with an abundance of plastics measuring up to 1.5 m across and at a higher density than previously thought. The organization will continue to pilot the array and will start cleaning the pile before the end of the decade.

Once the plastic is out, what should we do with it? The foundation (基金会) hopes that the plastic from the ocean will have a commercial value which can help to fund the project. Ocean plastic is not easy to use, it’s mixed by nature consisting of everything from intact PET bottles to micro plastics. However, some of the world's biggest companies also see the chance to market oceans plastic products.

Transforming today’s plastics economy from its present form (take-make-waste) to a zero waste circular economy (take-make-take-make) is a difficult challenge. However, with cooperative action from producers, recyclers, governments and consumers alike and continuing innovation (革新) it can be done.

    1What’s Boyan Slat’s idea about?

A.A way to collect ocean plastic waste.

B.A new product made of ocean plastic.

C.A machine to recycle plastic garbage.

D.An organization to research into plastic.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “density” in Paragraph 4?

    A.Flexibility. B.Thickness.

    C.Width. D.Strength.

3What do some biggest companies expect of the ocean plastic?

A.It’ll be turned into treasure. B.It’ll sponsor the foundation.

C.It’ll cooperate with the government. D.It’ll take the form of take-make-waste.

4Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary. B.A guidebook.

    C.A novel. D.A magazine

  • 24、   I’m originally from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. The Point was known for its massive rip currents(退潮流).

So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. He called me, “Hey, I got a couple of kids. I gotta go and give them a warning. Keep an eye on us.” I said, “Sure.”

And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone and grabbed his buoy(航标), a rip was snapped up under these two kids, and they were getting sucked out. All I saw was two small noses bobbing in the water. Mike was dashing toward the ocean.

By now, the mother of the two kids realized what was happening. She was screaming. I started rushing toward her, but before I was even halfway there, Mike reached the kids.

Mike swam sideways out of the rip current into the clear water and started bringing them in. When I reached their mother, Mike was in waist-deep water. The kids were so exhausted, so Mike was carrying them, one under each arm.

I turned to their mom, “Hey, it’s OK. They’re safe.” I saw her terror start to fade.

She glanced back and got her first good look at Mike. He had a number of really scary tattoos( 纹身), and his shaved head showed the scar he got from a broken beer bottle. Then a crazy thing happened. I saw a new kind of panic wash over her as though there was some new, equally dangerous threat on her kids’ lives. She rushed up to Mike and snatched her kids. Not even a thank-you.

Mike just glanced at me, shrugged, and jogged back to his tower.

If any other guard had worked at that night, including me, there would be a very real chance that that mother wasn’t going home with both her kids.

1Which of the following words can best describe “ Mike’s reaction to the two kids in danger” ?

A.Rude and aggressive. B.Quick and brave.

C.Careless and risky. D.Slow and cautious.

2Why didn’t the woman say “ thank you” to Mike?

A.He was rude to her kids.

B.She was too exhausted to say any words.

C.He got tired of being highly thought of.

D.He looked like a threatening guy with tattoos and scars.

3What information does the author want to convey in the story?

    A.Be a friendly and easy-going lifeguard.

B.Watch out for your kids playing on the beach.

C.Don’t let fear or prejudice prevent you recognizing a hero.

D.Never judge a hero by his way of rescuing.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was 19, I spent part of my summer at an adventure camp on Vancouver Island, supervising (照料) a group of 10-year-old girls. Towards the end of the first week, I took them on a camping. By six in the evening, we’d climbed a small mountain. The peak had trees on one side and bald rock on the other. I let the girls play in the wooded area while I arranged things for dinner.

When the screaming started, I wasn’t too alarmed-I could see my group tearing through the bush and thought they’d just disturbed a bees’ nest. As the first girl appeared, I asked what was going on. “Wildcat!” she gasped. The image in my head was of a house cat gone wild, but with her next breath she added, “It’s attacking Alyson.” I told the girls to climb on to the rocks and then ran to where they’d been playing. Alyson was lying by bush. She was on her back, eyes wide, staring at a huge cat beside her. The cat was watching me.

Anyone familiar with westerns will have seen a cougar (美洲狮) — the mountain lion that springs from the rock face on to the passerby. We’d been told how to deal with bears: “Keep still, back up, make yourself look big.” But we hadn’t covered cougars. I grabbed a stick and swung it into the animal’s face. Startled, it took off into the bushes.

Seeing that Alyson was hurt, I set off for the first-aid box, but hadn’t gone four steps when I heard a moan. Turning back, I saw the cougar crouched (蹲伏) by Alyson’s head. It appeared to be eating her. This time I used a bigger stick, hit harder and held on. Once again, it disappeared, and I knelt by Alyson.

“There’s no way someone can live through this,” I thought. The cat had torn deep into her neck. She had long cuts on her face. “Am I going to die?” she asked. Her heartbeat was racing but weak, the sign of a heart trembling from shock.
