二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Climate emergencies are a bit like buses. You wait an age for one and then three come along at once. Parliaments in the UK and Ireland passed motions declaring a climate emergency in May. Last Monday, Canada followed suit.

It isn’t just parliament sounding the alarm. “This is a climate emergency,” said U.N. climate chief Patricia Espinosa for the first time last Tuesday. Hours earlier, James Bevan of England’s Environment Agency and Vince Cable, the leader of the U.K.’s Liberal Democrats, also used the phrase.

They join a cast of high-profile public figures already on the bus, from UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres. But how did the language of climate change campaigners jump to the lips of the establishment, and should we welcome its seemingly unstoppable adoption?

Does this language make a difference? A day after Canada’s climate emergency motion, it approved a £4.4 billion oil pipeline. Bristol City Council in the UK also declared a climate emergency, yet the city’s mayor subsequently backed expansion of the local airport. Nothing changed on UK streets after parliament declared a climate emergency, notes former Labour Party leader Ed MIliband. “This silent response to an alarm that we ourselves have sounded symbolizes the challenge we face,” he wrote. _______?_______

Mike Hulme at the University of Cambridge argues against the phrase because it implies “time-limited radical(激进的)” action could end the emergency, when climate change is actually a “new condition of human existence.” Some, HUlme included, also fear the language may cause counterproductive responses.

Bur Roz Pidcock of communication organization Climate Outreach says a climate emergency “suggests a response that is very radical in scale and ambition, but not incautious or knee-jerk(本能的),” and certainly not a license for extreme measure like geoengineering the climate.

Despite the risk of phrase being devalued, Rebecca Willis at Lancaster University in the U.K. tells me it is still useful ---and that’s because it is true. As Spratt says, “You cannot solve a problem unless you name it for exactly what it is.” Getting politicians to adopt the language will also be crucial to holding them to tough policy decisions later, says Doug Parr of Greenpeace.

The phrase’s widespread adoption isn’t a problem. The lack of action equivalent to such language is. And that action is going to include a lot of silently gliding electric buses.

1Which of the following sentences may best end Paragraph 4?

A.We should strive to stimulate people’s initiative.

B.The use of “climate emergency” highlights the challenge.

C.Such a mismatch risks making the term meaningless.

D.There are many people against the use of the phrase.

2It can be inferred from the passage that Mike Hulme thinks that ______.

A.climate change call for deliberate consideration before action is taken

B.immediate action should be taken to put climate emergency to an end

C.the phrase “climate emergency” may lead to the opposite consequences

D.people all over the world have been accustomed to climate change

3Which of the following arguments can be used in favour of the phrase “climate emergency”?.

A.Extreme measures will be taken to address the issue of climate change

B.The use of the phrase may contribute to substantial policymaking.

C.The phrase will make no sense unless practical solutions are found.

D.Less attention is paid to the phrase though it reflects a true story.

4What is the author’s attitude towards the phrase “climate emergency”?

    A.Negative B.Optimistic

    C.Indifferent D.Objective

  • 22、   My college experience included this life-skill lesson: Drink alcohol on a full stomach. Or you will get inebriated too quickly. Of course, most college students shouldn’t be drinking at all, but we know from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that close to 60 percent of college students aged 18 to 22 do consume alcohol, which makes harm-reducing approaches important.

Unfortunately, campus authorities and researchers are reporting a practice that turns the full-stomach drinking strategy on its head: rather than filling up before a night of partying, significant numbers of students refuse to eat all day before consuming alcohol.

This is a high-risk behavior called “drunkorexia,” which is one part eating disorder, one part alcoholism—a very dangerous combination for college-age students. The term drunkorexia, which can also include excessive exercise or purging before consuming alcohol, was coined about 10 years ago, and it started showing up in medical research around 2012. Drunkorexia addresses the need to be the life of the party while staying extremely thin, pointing to a flawed mind-set about body image and alcoholism among college students, mostly women.

Imagine this scenario: A female college freshman doesn’t eat anything all day, exercises on an empty stomach, then downs five shots of tequila in less than two hours. Because there’s no food in her system to help slow the absorption of alcohol, those shots affect her rapidly, leading to inebriation and possibly passing out, vomiting or suffering alcohol poisoning. That’s drunkorexia.

Tavis Glassman, professor of health education and public health at the University of Toledo in Ohio, researches drunkorexia and worries about scenarios such as the one described above: “With nothing in her system, alcohol hits quickly, and that brings up the same issues as with any high-risk drinking: getting home safely, sexual assault, unintentional injury, fights, hangovers that affect class attendance and grades, and possibly ending up in emergency because the alcohol hits so hard,” he says.

“Alcohol can negatively affect the liver or gastrointestinal system, it can interfere with sleep, lower the immune system and is linked to several types of cancers,” Hultin says.

1What does the underlined word “inebriated” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A. excited B. overwhelmed C. addicted D. drunk

2We can infer from the passage that ____________.

    A. a large number of college students spend most of their nights partying

    B. some college students refuse to eat before drinking alcohol to keep slim

    C. There is a direct link between body image and consuming alcohol

    D. female college student is more likely to be hurt if she drinks alcohol

3Which of the following may Tavis Glassman agree with?

    A. With more food in one’s system, he may suffer from the effects of alcohol slowly.

    B. Drinking five shots of tequila in less than two hours is the performance of drunkorexia.

    C. Those who don’t attend classes and have lower grades tend to be addicted to alcohol.

    D. Alcohol has negative effects on the immune system and may lead to several cancers.

  • 23、   Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed () by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing (强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

1People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ________.

    A. are ready to change their minds

    B. are easily affected by windy weather

    C. don’t have the power to face their fate

    D. can’t exercise control over themselves

    2Losers would think that ________.

    A. success is the result of hard work

    B. working hard will lead to success

    C. their failure is only because of bad luck

    D. they don’t make efforts to succeed

3It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ________.

    A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes

    B. developing confidence is the key to future success

    C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind

    D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action

4The last paragraph serves as ________.

    A. the proof of the author’s points

    B. the conclusion of the argument

    C. an introduction to another topic

    D. a comparison between two views

5Which is the best title for the passage?

    A. Success Is a Choice B. The Secrets of Success

    C. Develop Our Confidence D. How to Achieve Success

  • 24、When you re grocery shopping, have you ever noticed that most grocery stores often don’t have windows and if they do they’re only at the front of the store? You might not pay much attention to the architectural features of the building you re grocery shopping in—you’re there to shop for food, not admire the layout! But that’s not just it!

“Grocery stores want to create a separate environment within the stores, where the outside world doesn’t exist,” explains Andrei Vasilescu, a shopping expert who has studied shopping behaviors and psychology. “You don’t get bothered by the rain, sunshine, or the fact that your kids are waiting in the parking lot. All your focus is on the shopping experience.” This technique also prevents shoppers from noticing that it’s getting dark out.

“Walls instead of windows can keep daylight out of grocery stores and help preserve the products, as some products can go bad faster in direct sunlight. Too much sun exposure can even cause packaging labels to fade. Furthermore, having windows in their stores would decrease the space available to showcase products,” says Margine Biswas, an architect with expertise in retail (零售) design. “Compared to windows, exterior (外部的) walls have stronger structural supports and can hold the heavier items on the shelves of those walls.”

Are some grocery stores going against this trend? In Germany, a study was conducted to test out stores with more natural light. A few stores had some bread products going bad rapidly due to the sunlight. They needed to replace the glass with specially designed panes (窗格) that help reduce the heat and radiation. This technique hasn’t caught on widely yet. A National Rewable Energy laboratory study in 2002 assessed the effects of natural light on shoppers—and it found that shoppers felt vastly more comfortable when there was more natural light around. They were also better able to identify both products and other people in the stores. It’s worth noting; though, that this study assessed natural light in all retail spaces, not just grocery stores. The challenges of adding more natural light to grocery stores remain.

【1】How does a grocery store without windows influence its shoppers?

A.It keeps them absorbed in shopping.

B.It helps to strengthen family bonds.

C.It prevents them from shopping relaxedly.

D.It misleads them to buy unnecessary goods.

【2】“What do Margine Biswas’s words mainly suggest about grocery stores?

    A.Retail design is not complex.

    B.Natural light is available.

    C.Windows still have their value.

    D.Windows barely benefit them.

【3】What is the author’s opinion on adding more natural light to grocery stores?

A.It can be carried out widely.

B.Shoppers will be discouraged by it.

    C.It proves less challenging.

    D.The stores should be cautious.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Potential effects of natural light on grocery stores.

B.Reasons why most grocery stores have no windows.

C.Some tricks applied by a majority of grocery stores.

D.How consumers can better enjoy grocery shopping.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sally had anxiety disorder trouble that made her fail to speak in social situations. I am a nurse and use Bella to help children in my community, to bring them comfort and confidence the way only a dog can. I thought back to the day when I'd first brought Bella to the school.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room. “Sally hasn't spoken outside her home in two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when she noticed my dog.

“This is Bella,”I said.“She does tricks. Would you like to see?”

Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally's eyes lit up. I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella, maybe because she couldn't rely on the spoken word herself. Bella sensed that and responded. Soon Sally was able to put Bella through her paces all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning in March when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper, “Good dog.” Sally didn't take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose.

Now, five-year-old Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella, my trained dog, sitting calmly by her side. All the eyes of her classmates were focused on Sally. They were waiting for her to speak. It was June—only one week of school left—but they had never heard her voice. Not once.

    Paragraph 1:

But not a word came out.

    Paragraph 2:

The next week, she told me she wanted to try again, looking up at me with determination.
