二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What are the foods that you can only taste in memories? Your mother’s biscuits? The mud (泥) pies you made as a child? And what are the recipes that bring those memories to mind?

This morning, for the first time in more than a year, I made Dutch Babies. From scratch. And I didn’t burn them. Yes, I’m the kind of cook who’s always amazed to pull anything out of the oven that isn’t burnt. But sometimes, I get lucky.

What are Dutch Babies? Picture a cross between a pancake and an omelet (煎蛋饼) that tastes better than both. They’re easy to make, and you can make a lot of servings (一份食物) in one pan (平底锅) at the same time.

Making Dutch Babies brings to my mind some of the happiest memories of my life. I was given the recipe by a dear friend Sally, a cook who knew a great dish when she tasted it.

I’ve made Dutch Babies a few thousand times for sleepovers (夜宿的客人) and houseguests and Sunday suppers. They were always a hit, even if I burned them.

After my kids grew up, I didn’t cook much for years, except for holidays or other big occasions. But if I had a full house, I’d make Dutch Babies for breakfast.

I can’t recall the last time I made Dutch Babies, before today. I know it was more than a year ago, before life as we knew it was shut down for COVID-19, and we stopped having guests.

So why did I make them this morning for only my husband and me? It’s been a hard year for all of us, filled with things we couldn’t do. I was hungry to celebrate being alive.

I mixed up the ingredients and stuck it in the oven. While it baked, I thought of all the family and friends I’ve baked it for over the years.

Good food can feed a hungry crowd. But if it’s made with love and seasoned with memories, it can fill a soul with hope of better days to come. Add your own memories. And say thanks to my friend Sally.

【1】The questions asked in the first paragraph are used to ________.

A.explain the connection between food and memory

B.express the author’s concern about food safety

C.introduce the topic to be discussed

    D.remind readers of something delicious

【2】What do paragraphs 4 to 6 mainly talk about?

A.The author’s tips on how to make Dutch Babies.

B.The author’s memories of making Dutch Babies.

C.Why Dutch Babies were welcomed at the author’s home.

D.The author’s family tradition of eating Dutch Babies.

【3】Why did the author make Dutch Babies again after more than a year?

    A.To welcome guests from afar.

    B.To please her husband.

    C.To thank her friend Sally.

D.To show her gratitude for being alive.

【4】What does the author want to tell us from this article?

A.Food tastes better when it is shared.

B.Food made with love can feed the soul.

C.Food gives us hope for better days.

D.Food eaten when hungry creates good memories.

  • 22、My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.

Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a timekiller . But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn't know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I've felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”

A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I've come to believe he'd want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, somebody else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don't hold back because they're afraid to fail. They're only afraid of failing us. They don't worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father's letter-is of being a disappointment.

Give your children permission to succeed. They're waiting for you to believe in them.

I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts:“Don't worry; you'll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.

【1】We learn from the text that the author ________.

    A. lost his father when he was young

    B. worked hard before he read his father's letter

    C. asked his father's permission to believe in himself

    D. knew exactly what great thing his father wanted him to do

【2】What does the author tell us in the 3rd paragraph?

    A. Children need their parents' letters.

    B. Children are afraid to be disappointed.

    C. His children's fear of failure held them back.

    D. His father's letter removed his fear of failing his parents.

【3Which of the following is TRUE of the author?

    A. He got no access to success.

    B. He wrote back to his father at 12.

    C. He was sure his parents loved him.

    D. He once asked his father about the letter.

【4The main purpose of the text is to ________.

    A. describe children's thinking

    B. answer some questions children have

    C. stress the importance of communication

    D. advise parents to encourage their children

  • 23、A new year can bring new excitement and opportunities to grow for kids, too. 【1】 New Year’s resolutions can be a beneficial way for kids to get motivated, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

【2】 ”said Dr. Lanre Falusi, a Washington, D. C., pediatrician (儿科医生) in an American Academy of Pediatrics statement. “Kids also love having something to work toward and to have fun keeping track on sticker charts or getting praise or rewards as they reach these goals.”

The idea of a goal may also be easier for younger children to grasp. Jack Frezell, 3, of Ontario, Canada, said his goal for next year is to “go on my bike by myself.” Setting goals can teach children persistence, focus and the value of planning, according to Gary Latham, Secretary of State Professor of Organizational Behavior at the University of Toronto, who specializes in goal setting. “ 【3】 ” Latham said, “It teaches them control over their environment instead of being dependent on Mom and Dad.”

【4】 “It has to be concrete; it has to be within the child’s ability to attain; and there has to be a reasonable time frame,” said Latham. He noted that once kids reach age 7 or so, it’s achievable for them to set a goal and make their own plan for how to pursue and attain it. 【5】 Here’s when to show children with inspiration and give them a hand.

“Next thing you know, the overall goal has been attained, and it gives kids a sense of accomplishment, excitement and achievement,” he said.

A.Setting realistic goals is difficult for kids.

B.The big impact is that it teaches them initiative.

C.How important it is to set healthy goals with kids.

D.Goals that are both specific and achievable are key.

E.They can learn to focus on new goals just like adults.

F.If it’s not specific, some kids are likely to blame themselves.

G.Of course, guidance from parents is still helpful for kids of all ages.

  • 24、Once upon a time, science fiction was just a style among other styles. There were crime stories, there were horror stories, there was literary fiction, and there was science fiction. But today science themes dominate these other styles. It's difficult to think of much modern crime, horror or “serious” fiction that doesn't involve science.

And its not just books. With every second movie and computer game having a sci-fi element, science fiction seems to have controlled our entire entertainment culture. It's clear that if we want to define science fiction, we should relate it to the role that science plays in our lives.

Although some experts have claimed to be able to trace sci-fi back to ancient times, it is more reasonable to find it in initial form in the 19th century, when industrial societies arose. One of the features that set industrial societies apart from other kinds was the increasing part that science played in everyday life. Factories with vast machines turned out huge quantities of goods, which were transported by trains, motor vehicles and ships all over the world. Cities were built on the back of technology, with electricity in homes and hospitals helping everyone to lead healthier, more convenient lives. All of these changes had great effects not only on people's real lives, but on their imaginative ones.

Writers began to describe these changing physical and mental landscapes, eventually giving science fiction a large and devoted fan base of especially young readers, who found that it spoke to their curiosity about the future that science would create.

But sci-fiction reflected fears about science more than it did hopes. These typical early science fiction novels might be a UK novel like H. G. Wells' The War of the worlds(1897). With great skill, Wells played upon the fears of technology by imagining Earth under threat by a civilization-that of men from Mars.

The science fiction of today expresses the impact of the computing revolution, robotics and our environmental challenges, while it is less concerned with “little green men from Mar” and other themes of past sci-fiction.

Given that science, technology and polities are always intertwined, contemporary science fiction often has a great deal to say about power. Many recent novels-like American Cory Doctorow's Little Brother(2008)-are concerned with government and security service “conspiracies(阴谋)” against the people, particularly as the revelations of whistleblowers like Edward Snowden sink in. This can give sci-fi writing a “skeptical(怀疑的)” feel.

This underlines one of the features that remains constant between the beginnings of the empire of science fiction and its state today.

As then, so now: We want to read about how fearful the future will be, not how it will be a paradise.

【1】According to the first paragraph, we know that ________.

A.science fiction used to take the leadership in literature

B.horror story and literary fiction have initiated science fiction

C.modern fiction reflects the influence of science fiction

D.science fiction is the dominant literature style at present time

【2】What caused science fiction to appear in the 19th century?

A.The curiosity of young readers about the future.

B.The changes that the industrial revolution brought about.

C.People's stretched imagination affected by their real life.

D.People's fears about science rather than hopes.

【3】According to the passage, what do we know about the early science fiction?

A.It aroused people's curiosity of science on daily life.

B.It intensified people's worries about the social problems.

C.It promoted people's understanding of the true value of science.

D.It conveyed an atmosphere of imaginary anxieties to people.

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.Despite the content, the theme of science fiction remains the same.

B.The fear of outer space attack has long been a worry among people of times.

C.The appearance of science fiction has caused misunderstanding among people.

D.Science fiction is weakening government power implemented on people.
