21、 As a saying goes, "Don`t use a lot where a little will do." I recently saw a reality show about helping change struggling restaurants. The premise(前提)is that an expert comes in to help save a family business, and in the process helps the owners rebuild their relationships and their lives. In the beginning, the expert suggested the family reduce their menu from multiple pages to just one. They originally created a massive list of selections because they assumed this created more value. But in many instances, less is more.
This is a big part of the philosophy behind the website—Tiny Buddha. I publish one post from the community every day, which allows me to spend a great deal of time with writers. Traditional wisdom of the web suggests that more content leads to more page views, which eventually creates a successful site. Yet I’ve found the opposite is true.
Having a lower quantity allows more time to focus on quality, and also allows more time for connection through comments. In this way, it’s not about building a large community; it’s about developing and improving an engaged one. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no greater success than that. Regardless of your project or dream, the "less is more" philosophy can go a long way in creating value and enabling progress.
You may not have a large number of hours to commit, but this means you are encouraged to prioritize your goals, and that just may help you focus and become the most effective. You may not have abundant resources, but this means your passion and purpose may be your greatest possession, and there`s no limit to what you can accomplish when you invest yourself in a vision(构想)that moves and inspires you. You may not have countless readers or customers, but this means you can focus on providing excellent service, which can be far more valuable than dozens of cursory(粗略的)connections and standard experiences.
Most importantly, when we focus on doing less and doing it well, instead of doing more and assuming it better,we are less scattered(分散的), more deliberate, less harried, and more attentive. And really, isn’t that what we want? It`s not just the goals and the outcomes we imagine; it’s the happiness and satisfaction we imagine we’ll experience when we get there. It may be the biggest advantage to do less: we create more space to enjoy those things now.

22、Visiting the London Eye
Avoid Peak Times
The London Eye is busiest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the UK school holidays, and is quieter at the beginning and end of their opening hours, which vary throughout the year. As a rough guide, summer hours are 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. and winter hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but do check in advance on their site for the hours on the day you plan to go. It's worth bearing in mind that it closes for around two weeks every January, for annual maintenance (维护).
Buy Tickets Online
Buying tickets online will allow you to skip the initial ticket office line and also save you 10%, if you book more than 24 hours in advance. You will, however, be tying yourself into a time slot, unless you choose an Any Time Flexi ticket. If you want to avoid waiting as much as possible, your best bet is buying a Fast Track ticket, which can be bought on the day or online (again, with a 10% discount and the bonus of skipping the ticket office line). It's an extra cost, but will grant you fast track entry through a dedicated entrance.
Travel By Train
Waterloo station (served by the tube and overland trains) is the closest to the London Eye, at just a five-minute walk away. Both Embankment and Charing Cross are fairly close, at around a 10-minute walk. Westminster station is a short and picturesque walk over the river where you'll also find the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

23、Last year, the widespread pandemic, COVID-19, struck the globe, for which reason many countries posed lockdown restrictions in some disease-stricken areas.
When her five-year-old daughter, Sophie, was told she had to isolate (隔离) around the Christmas period, Amy Thompson had an innovative idea that would make sure both Sophie, and her seven-year-old brother, Will, were kept entertained.
“I wanted to do something a bit different as it was going to be the first Christmas with no Santa visits or trips to Christmas markets, and I still wanted to give them a really special December.”
Amy, who is an event and wedding planner, wrote down different activities on pieces of paper and put them into an advent calendar for the children to open. Each activity was different and a total surprise.
Movie night with treats, game night, making video calls with their cousins and baking were just some of the activities that they opened on those chilly December mornings that kept them excited for the day ahead.
“We did almost all of them together. Christmas is a time to spend with family but when we couldn’t see our extended family, the kids were quite upset so we tried to make it as special as possible with the advent calendar. Some of the activities we would have done anyway, like watching Christmas movies, but they thought it was a special treat every time they opened an activity because we made a big deal out of it.”
Amy plans to do the same tradition again this year and is already thinking up new exciting activities to add for 2021 that won’t have to be within the lockdown restrictions.
【1】Why did Amy design an advent calendar?
A.To isolate her kids.

A.For the kids, opening an activity matters more than the activity itself.
B.The kids love their extended family more than their own family.
C.The advent calendar won’t be abandoned until the pandemic is over.
D.The advent calendar must include special activities rather than ordinary ones.
【4】What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a Christmas activity——the advent calendar.
B.To encourage people to fight against the pandemic.
C.To describe and praise a loving mother——Amy.
D.To tell a family story——a special celebration of Christmas.
24、“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.” “Two full inches in the first three days!”
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封) of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline( 腰围 ). The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.
【1】It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are ________.
A.objective
B.costly
C.illegal
D.unreliable
【2】Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.The court is in charge of removing dangerous product.
B.New products are more likely to be questionable.
C.The promoters usually just care about profits.

【3】FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product ________.
A.if it is a device
B.if it is a drug
C.if its consumers make complaints
D.if its distributors challenge FDA’s authority
【4】The author intends to ________.
A.make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises
B.show the weakness of the law on product safety
C.give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D.introduce the organization of FDA

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
It's natural to feel the need to control something when everything around you feels out of control, and you feel helpless. When a friend of mine first heard about the coronavirus outbreak, she got down on her hands and knees and cleaned her kitchen floor. She told me, “My floor wasn't even dirty, but doing something constructive made me feel in control and that I was holding on to my power, despite the desperate circumstances.”
Your most powerful weapon against uncertainty is your perspective because nobody and no situation can take that from you unless you give it away. Your perspective can victimize or empower you. When you look for the upside in a downside situation and figure out what you can control and what you can't, it's easier to accept whatever is beyond your control.
