二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、No pains, no gains. This is especially true for Amanda Gorman. In 2021, she became the youngest poet to write and read her works at a presidential inauguration (就职典礼). The 22-year old impressed the audience with The Hill We Climb, which referred to both painful history and hope for the future.

You wouldn’t know it from her delivery of her poem at the inauguration, but up until a few years ago, she struggled to overcome her speech problem. For much of her life, including when she was still an undergraduate at Harvard, Gorman had trouble pronouncing the letter “R”.

Her situation presented difficulties, but also had benefits. “I think it made me all that much stronger of a writer when you have to teach yourself how to say words from zero. I think of my speech trouble not as a weakness or a disability, but as one of my greatest strengths.”

To practice saying the letter, she’d listen on repeat to one song packed with “R”s — Aaron Burr, Sir from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s historical masterpiece, Hamilton. She would try to keep up with the singer as he was doing the rap (说唱). She believed if she could train herself to do this song, then she could train herself to say the letter “R”correctly. Sure enough, rapping along with Miranda’s fast-paced rhymes worked, and Gorman’s performance of her piece, The Hill We Climb, ranked among the highlights of the inauguration.

Overcoming a speech problem is a milestone for her. Gorman said she owes a lot to the Pulitzer Prize winning musical. That was why she included a few references to Hamilton in her inspiring poem, some of which the author of Hamilton noticed: He praised her performance in a post. “You were perfect. Perfectly written, perfectly delivered.”

【1】What did Gorman do to impress the audience at the inauguration?

    A.Share her painful story.

    B.Read her poem in public.

C.Write a poem in real time.

    D.Express concern for future.

【2】Which word used to be difficult for Gorman to read properly?

    A.Amanda.

    B.Mickey.

    C.Hamilton.

    D.Miranda.

【3】Why did Gorman learn to sing Aaron Burr, Sir?

    A.To win wide recognition.

    B.To train her singing skills.

    C.To improve pronunciation.

    D.To learn fast-paced styles.

【4】What can we learn from Gorman’s story?

A.Learn to walk before you run.

    B.Practice breaks down barriers.

C.Power of role models is great.

D.Poem writing is key to success.

  • 22、   Most people would tremble at the idea of getting caught up in a 73.5-foot wave. But for Brazilian pro-surfer Maya, it presented the perfect opportunity to break her 2018 world record for the largest wave surfed by a female. The athlete skillfully maneuvered (操控) the massive wave at the World Surf League (WSL) Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge in Praia do Norte, Portugal, where she established her first world record by riding a 68-foot wave.

“When I let go of the rope, I had a feeling it could be the one but wasn’t sure. The speed was very high, but the noise that the wave made when it broke made me realize that this was probably the biggest wave I’d ever ridden.

Her record, earning her WSL’s 2020 women’s Biggest Wave Award, was two feet higher than Dupont’s wave, who had ridden the largest wave. It was also 3.5 feet higher than the 70-foot wave ridden by the 2020 men’s Biggest Wave Award winner Kai Lenny!

“Our sport is very male-dominated, with the performances on the male side being often much stronger than ours as females,” she said. “This year, a woman did surf the biggest, tallest wave of the year. It opens the idea that in other categories and other areas of surfing, this could be accomplished, too.”

Though Maya, who has been surfing competitively since she was 15, seemed to effortlessly move over the monster surf, it has not all been smooth sailing. Her first attempt at pursuing the world’s biggest wave in Nazare, Portugal, in 2013 could have ended her career. The surfer suffered a disastrous wipeout that broke her ankle and almost caused her to drown. However, it did not reduce her determination to create her record as one of the world’s greatest surfers!

【1】What was Maya’s result in WSL Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge in 2018?

    A.71.5 feet.

    B.68 feet.

    C.70 feet.

    D.73.5 feet.

【2】What made Maya believe she was riding the biggest wave?

    A.The noise of the wave.

    B.The speed of the wave.

    C.The size of the wave.

    D.The height of the wave.

【3】What did Maya think of her achievement?

A.It reflected people’s idea about surfing.

B.It represented the highest level of surfers.

C.It proved the ability of female surfers.

D.It indicated the domination of males.

    【4】What led to Maya’s achievement?

    A.Her strong will.

    B.Her talent.

    C.Her attempt.

    D.Her frustration.

  • 23、   Back in 2009, China was wrongly accused by the West of "controlling" the Copenhagen talks on climate change. By then China had truly carried out strict policies to reduce the energy consumption of economic activities and at the international level, the top Chinese leaders participated in round-clock efforts to cooperate with the major players to build a united front for efforts to solve global warming. But China was finally misjudged.

This misjudgment caused China's scholars to rethink China's climate change communicative ways. Among them was Zheng Baowei, journalism professor of Renmin University of China, who realized China had to better shape its communication on its environmental protection.

Delightfully, the efforts have paid off. Zheng set up a top-level international group advising his research team. He is in charge of doctoral candidates on climate change communication. Climate awareness surveys have been conducted, and a package of communication tools has been designed. Many seminars have been arranged.

Recently, he arranged a seminar on climate change and health communication on the changing situation both in China and the world. First of all, this stressed that China's policy has developed from reducing its energy consumption and pollution prevention to the important goals of achieving a "Beautiful China" and "'Healthy China, "while coming up with plans to realize an ecological civilization since late 2012. With such goals, China played a leading role in securing the Paris climate change deal in 2015 together with the United States and European Union. In Paris, China promised to let out its carbon to the maximum in 2030.

It is a demanding job communicating climate change and other topics of lasting development well. Despite that, some foreign scholars have realized China's smart ways in presenting the green concepts. They appreciated China's idea of building a "Beautiful China" and "Healthy China" and said it can he expanded into an idea of a "Beautiful World" and "Healthy World".

Looking back from how China had followed the steps of the industrialized countries in advocating climate fight, people find now its own green ideas are being recognized.

1What did the West think of the role China played in Copenhagen talks in 2009?

    A. China worked successfully with other countries.

    B. China succeeded in hosting the conferences.

    C. China participated passively in all the talks.

    D. China played a negative part in the talks.

2How did China deal with the misjudgment?

    A. China had to improve communicative ways with other countries.

    B. China spared no effort to prevent air and water being polluted.

    C. China made great efforts to protect the environment.

    D. China intended to gain fair judgment from the world.

3What is China's policy on climate change and health communication?

    A. Reducing as much energy consumption as possible to control pollution.

    B. Focusing more on realizing an ecological civilization in China.

    C. Communicating climate change and some other topics well.

    D. Reaching the goals of a "Beautiful China" and "Healthy China".

4What makes China's green idea well received?

    A. China making promises to let out its carbon to the maximum in 2030.

    B. China reducing its energy consumption as well as pollution prevention.

    C. China's idea being updated to that of a Beautiful World and Healthy World.

    D. China following the steps of the industrialized countries fighting global warming.

  • 24、   The flight of butterflies has so far been somewhat of a secret to researchers, given their unusually large and broad wings relative to their body size. Now researchers at Lund University in Sweden have studied the aerodynamics (空气动力) of butterflies in the wind tunnel (风洞). The results suggest that butterflies use a highly helpful clap technique, therefore making use of their unique wings. This helps them rapidly take off when escaping natural enemies.

The researchers studied the wingbeats of freely flying butterflies during takeoff in the wind tunnel. During the upward process, the wings cup, creating an air-filled pocket between them. When the wings strike each other, the air is forced out, resulting in a backward strong stream of air that pushes the butterflies forward. The downward wingbeat has another function: the butterflies stay in the air and do not fall to the ground.

The wings’ striking was described by researchers almost 50 years ago, but it is only in this study that the theory has been tested on real butterflies in free flight. Until now, it has been generally believed that butterfly wings are aerodynamically inefficient. However, the researchers suggest that the opposite is actually true.

“That the wings are cupped when butterflies clap them together, makes the wing clap much more effective. It is an elegant mechanism that is far more advanced than we imagined, and it is fascinating,” says biology researcher Per Henningsson, who studied the butterflies’ aerodynamics. “The results of the study could help inspire improved performance and flight technology in small unmanned aircraft,” he continues.

In addition to studying the butterflies, the researchers designed mechanical wings that are modeled on real ones. The shape and flexibility of the mechanical wings as they are cupped and folded confirm the efficiency. Their measurements show that the pushing force created by the flexible wings is 22 percent higher and the efficiency 28 percent better compared to if the wings had been rigid.

【1】What does the researchers’ study focus on?

    A.The butterfly’s body size.

    B.The butterfly’s escape technique.

    C.The butterfly’s flying principle.

    D.The butterfly’s frequency of wingbeats.

A.To circle steadily in the air.

    B.To form an air pocket.

    C.To release their additional energy.

D.To empty the air pocket for forward force.

    A.They might draw public attention.

B.They could be used to test the findings.

C.They’d show results in line with popular belief.

D.They helped avoid experimenting on live butterflies.
