二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A few days after dropping off her daughter at college, Andrea got a phone call. Her daughter was ill. Andrea drove there immediately, located a doctor in town, booked a room at the university hotel and put her daughter to bed to recover. The next morning, Andrea went to her daughter's classes, taking notes on her behalf. It was important that her daughter headed into the first semester of college without missing a beat: A future dental career required an extremely good undergraduate academic record of four years.

At the same time, another parent faced a different type of problem. Alexis had handpicked her daughter's new university specifically and aimed to give her daughter an ideal social experience at college. But when she got there, she didn't seem to hit her stride. Alexis blamed it on a working-class roommate who didn't ever want to go out to meet people-and told her daughter, in no uncertain terms, to change roommates.

Both Andrea and Alexis are examples of 'helicopter parents', defined by their hovering and readiness with supplies, assistance and guidance. Their interventions were costly-requiring time, financial reserves, social understanding and knowledge of higher education-though they had different purposes.

Why does educational and professional success today seem to require financial and emotional parental support? In large part, it reflects the shifting relationship between families and the university in America in the past century. Slowly after WWI and rapidly after WWII, many public universities were in fact free, as the government offered universities the resources to help families battle economic depression and poverty. However, in the 1980s, the government shifted financial aid largely from grants to loans. Soon, universities entered a period of heavy and expensive administrative growth as they faced new and intensive pressures. Without the support of the state, families eventually came to absorb many of these costs.

Universities now rely, in part, on parents, particularly those with money, time, and connections to meet their basic needs. However, paying parents bring more than funds alone. They often help promote the university; conduct admissions interviews; interface with donating alumni; assist with their own students’ emotional, cognitive and physical needs and help place graduates(both related and not) in valuable internships and jobs.

But the new family-university partnership exacts a toll. Parents are pushed to extend major parenting responsibilities into doing heavy financial lifting for their children who are supposed to be building their own financial security. There is also some truth to the notion that the helicoptered children are slow to adapt to adulthood, make decisions about their careers, and manage friendships without calling on their parents for help.

1What does the underlined sentence 'she didn't seem to hit her stride' in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Alexis' daughter's social competence wasn't promoted.

B.Alexis' daughter found she herself had financial difficulties.

C.Alexis' daughter disagreed with Alexis about her working-class roommate.

D.Alexis' daughter found university life was different from what she had expected.

2What's the author' attitude towards 'helicopter parents'?

    A.Critical. B.Cautious. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.

    3What's this passage mainly about?

A.Troubles faced by universities in America.

B.The partnership between colleges and ''helicopter parents'.

C.The troubled relationship between parents and their children.

D.The fierce competition among the career-minded generation.

  • 22、They give us paper and fuel, as well as vital ecological services – like cleaning the air, storing carbon and providing habitat. We’re talking about trees, of course. But changes in the environment largely caused by humans appear to be causing great transformations in trees around the world.

In a new study, scientists reviewed global research on trends in tree seedlings, growth and death. They combined those data with an analysis of deforestation (森林砍伐). And they found that worldwide, older trees are dying at a higher rate than in the past due to factors like rising air temperature, wildfires, drought and pathogens (病原体).

“And most of the drivers of this decrease in large, old trees, such as rising temperatures, severe droughts, wildfires, windstorms and deforestation are all – although variable across the globe – generally increasing. And so both the loss has already occurred, but we expect more continued loss of big, old trees,” said Nate McDowell, an earth scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab, who was one of the study’s authors.

“So if we have an increasing rate of death, particularly of the larger, older trees, what’s left are the younger trees. So that’s why, on average, through the loss of bigger, older trees, our forests are becoming younger and shorter.”

This trend is a problem because old trees are vitally important. “For sure, the increase in death does limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem and can force the system to become a carbon source to the atmosphere. The second reason we care is from a biodiversity perspective: Old trees tend to house a higher biodiversity than young forests do. And the third reason is linked with beauty: As a society, we care about these trees. We have national parks named after these big trees. So there’s a personal reason for people to care about this as well,” McDowell added.

【1】What formed the basis for the new study on trees?

    A.Previous study data on trees.

    B.wildfires, drought and pathogens.

C.Research on changes in the environment.

    D.Information about climate change.

【2】What does “the drivers” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The transformations brought by the loss of older trees.

B.The factors causing the death of older trees.

C.The causes of the disappearance of forests.

    D.The environmental impacts of cars.

【3】According to Nate McDowell, old trees are important in that________.

A.they can limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem

B.they play an important role in forming national parks

C.they allow the existence of a higher biodiversity

D.they bring in a much younger forest

【4】What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A.To prove that forests are becoming less diverse.

B.To call on society to plant more trees.

C.To explain the reasons behind the loss of old trees.

D.To describe the importance of old trees for our world.

  • 23、   New York City is a world capital in every sense of the word—it's a cultural and economic powerhouse, and arguably the most influential city on the planet. But it wasn't always this way, as the following cities once dominated the world around them.

    DjenneDjenno

In the flood lands of the Niger delta people have been building houses and other structures with clay for centuries. The town of DjenneDjenno is made entirely out of clay. It was inhabited as far back as 250 BC, and became an important link in the transSaharan gold trade(跨撒哈拉黄金交易). Constructed on hills called “toguere” the city managed to escape the marshy(沼泽的) landscape and annual floods produced by the rainy season. DjenneDjenno is believed to be one of the earliest settlements in the subSaharan region, and is considered by some to be “the typical African City”.

Archeological evidence shows us a continuous human presence in the area up until the 14th century AD, when people moved to the nearby town of Djenne, founded in the 11th century. Further evidence points out that even before the city's construction, the Bozo people were growing wild rice in the region. In the 13th century AD, with King Koumboro's conversion to Islam, its palace transformed into a mosque.

    Carthage

Legend has it that Carthage was founded by Queen Dido of the Phoenicians. She fled the city of Tyre located in presentday Lebanon in order to escape the hatred of her brother Pygmalion, who was her rival to the throne. Along with a group of settlers, she traveled a great distance by sea and landed in North Africa, where she met King Iarbas. He offered to give them land in order to build a settlement, but no bigger than the surface covered by the hide(牛皮) of an ox. They cleverly cut the hide into thin strips and were able to enclose a fairly large area of land. On this land, the mighty city of Carthage was built.

These stories are most likely just that, but the fact that the Phoenicians built the city around 760 BC is true. Located in such a good position—in the middle of the Mediterranean, close to Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, and a pretty good distance from Egypt—helped make Carthage a leading trade center and military power. The population soon reached half a million citizens and, in order to house them all, buildings were all built five or six stories tall. Carthage was the first city in ancient times to have a centralized sewage system, linking all buildings within the city walls. The most notable of structures among the ruins was the “Thophet” which is believed to be an altar(圣坛) for child sacrifice.

    Tenochtitlan

Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec Empire. It was built on an island surrounded by Lake Texcoco deep inside the jungles of Central America. By the time the Spanish conquerors were aware of its existence, the population was around 200000. This was a city very different from what the Europeans were used to. Founded in 1325 AD, the Aztec capital was joined to the mainland by three causeways(堤道). It was laid out in straight street grids and had enormous pyramids at its center, which were surrounded by the skulls of the dead and ceremonial sculptures.

1What do we know about the ancient cities?

    A. Tenochtitlan was the first city to link all buildings within the city walls using a centralized sewage system.

    B. Carthage was considered to have played an important role in the transSaharan gold trade.

    C. There was no doubt that Carthage was founded by Queen Dido of the Phoenicians.

    D. According to some people, the city DjenneDjenno is “a typical African city”.

2The passage is most probably taken from ________.

    A. a news report B. a science fiction C. a history book D. a research paper

  • 24、   We all want to be successful in our work. But what happens when our achievements come at the risk of losing important friendships? If your friends didn't receive what they were hoping for, your success could make them feel like they've been “left in the dust”. But does that mean that we shouldn't enjoy our achievements in case we displease someone or that we should feel sorry for being successful when others aren't?

Those of us who value friendships and close working relationships might feel embarrassed for achieving more than our friends. But we deserve our success, and nothing should take it away. Jealousy is only natural, but It’s often unreasonable, too. Your success is probably not connected with your friends' progress, so you shouldn't feel bad about achieving your goals. If your friends stay unfriendly, don’t be afraid to keep yourself away from them. You are not responsible for their weaknesses, and nor should they treat you sharply for furthering your work.

On the other hand, your friends may think highly of your recent success while hiding their real feelings. They could be jealous, angry or sad that they are not progressing at the same rate. So, be careful not to boast. It's a thin line between pride and self-importance, and by crossing the line, you may risk losing team support.

Next time you want to boast about your end-of-year win, or high-class new office, consider your listeners. Maybe your friends narrowly missed out on a position-raising, or experienced pay cuts which meant they didn't get what they were expecting. If your work is on a rising path, it doesn't mean that's the case for everyone.

Perhaps a step forward in your work has meant that you don't spend as much time with your friends as you used to. If you've changed a post or moved to a new office, take the time to stay in touch with old friends. Chances are that in the build-up to your success you've built strong relationships along the way. Don't let that hard work go to waste by losing touch with them.

1From the first two paragraphs, it can be inferred that ________.

A.we should enjoy our deserving success

B.our success will certainly hurt our friends

C.friends will surely help us achieve success

D.our success is connected with our friends’ progress

2Which of the following best explains “boast” underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.Show up. B.Stand out.

    C.Talk big. D.Keep silent.

3What should we do if our friends support our success?

    A.Improve ourselves further.

    B.Consider their feelings.

    C.Help them make progress.

    D.Make them proud of us.

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A.How to share our success with friends.

B.How to enjoy our success to the fullest.

C.How to keep relationships between friends.

D.How to keep friendships while enjoying achievements.
