  • 21、Bedtime Rituals

At the end of a long day, you might want to collapse in front of the TV and watch an episode of your favorite show. 【1】 Settling down with a cup of lemon tea or reading a book can tell your body it’s time to sleep. If you turn these activities into a ritual—that is, if you do them every night around the same time—you will be all the more likely to get the rest you need.

A bedtime ritual is important not only because it prepares you for sleep but also because it helps establish healthy sleep habits. If your current habits don’t support good sleep, a bedtime ritual can help you make necessary changes. 【2】 Worry can make it hard to fall asleep at night, but for some people, anxiety at bedtime is common. Rituals can provide comfort by offering predictability and structure. Some rituals, such as journaling, might also relieve anxiety by giving the writer a fresh perspective or sense of meaning.

【3】 Consider trying several bedtime rituals before settling on a consistent routine. What’s important is figuring out what works for you. Start out with two or three activities according to your needs and preferences. If you enjoy exercise and movement, try yoga or gentle stretching. If you find comfort in order, create a to-do list for the next day. If classical music calms you, turn on some Bach or Mozart enjoying a bath.

Whether your bedtime ritual takes place in bed or somewhere else, make sure your environment is relaxing. Wear comfortable clothes or pajamas, curl up (蜷曲) under a cozy blanket, and keep the lights low. 【4】

A.Bedtime rituals can also help you reduce anxiety.

B.For adults, bedtime rituals typically last 30 minutes to an hour.

C.But engaging in some bedtime activities could actually help you sleep better.

D.Then when the time comes to fall asleep, you’ll be ready.

E.There’s no fixed format for the perfect bedtime ritual.

F.Evidence indicates that people who read a book in bed have better sleep quality.

  • 22、   Disease-carrying mosquitoes can spread diseases without affecting themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year, which results in over one million deaths. Humans experience continuous pressures from disease-carrying mosquitoes in many parts of the world, so we have to find ways to fight against those insects because they keep getting scarier.

Even though DEET remains the most commonly used, and most powerful, mosquito repellent (防护剂) ever developed, scientists are actively pursuing effective products based entirely on plant oils. While DEET is an effective contact repellent, many people dislike the oily feel and smell on their skin, and sometimes some people are sensitive to it. Consumers are always interested in alternatives to DEET and other synthetic (合成的) repellents, so there are numerous natural repellents on the market.

In my lab at Iowa State University, my team and I have been conducting research on natural products as possible insect repellents for the past 20 years. In the past few years, three of my Ph. D. students have contributed greatly to our research by designing, synthesizing, purifying, characterizing and testing more than 300 closely related chemicals coming from the best of natural repellents like citronellol, menthol and thymol.

These students have successfully tested these repellents against three species of dangerous mosquitoes. The first group of the new repellents act through the air. These chemicals have a vapor action that provides protection. These are potentially most useful in backyards, parks, houses, barracks and horse barns. The other group of the new repellents are the classic ones that stop insects from standing on a treated surface, such as human skin, clothing or tents; some researchers have conducted testing on some humans to confirm the effectiveness and identify the very best ones.

The new repellents were designed and made from the natural materials in plant essential oils. They maintain many of the advantages of the natural repellents: They are fully biodegradable (可生物降解的), with no ecological concerns or environmental wastes, and generally considered safe like the thousands of types of plant essential oils used in the flavor and perfume industries. However, thorough testing will be conducted to determine if they are truly non-poisonous because there is still no enough evidence.

【1】What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 1?

    A.The way mosquitoes spread disease.

B.The high death rate of mosquito-borne illness.

C.The difficulty of fighting disease-carrying mosquitoes.

D.The urgency of finding tools to fight against mosquitoes

【2】What is a disadvantage of DEET?

A.It causes discomfort to the users.

    B.It greatly harms people's health.

    C.It can't be applied universally.

D.It won't be effective for long.

【3】What can we learn about the second group of the new repellents?

    A.They can kill mosquitoes indirectly.

B.They are mainly used in the open air.

C.They are more effective on human skin.

D.They can prevent mosquitoes from contacting users.

【4】What's the author's attitude to the new repellents?

    A.Disapproving

    B.Negative

    C.Objective

    D.Subjective

  • 23、   Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: (1) They are not trained in how to be creative. (2) They don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭)their power to maximize group creativity.

A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.

To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散)and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.

The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.

Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.

When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.

Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.

This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.

1Research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.

    A.actually limit group creativity

    B.greatly encourage group creativity

C.enable people to form more ideas together

D.prevent people’s involvement in the problems

2According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to_____.

    A.think the other way round

    B.follow his way of thinking

C.be more confident in their own ideas

D.be less willing to share their own ideas

3What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?

A.Discuss the problem. B.Simplify the problem.

C.Put down group statements together. D.Write down their individual descriptions.

4How can each group member make changes to his initial solution?

A.By adding in collected evidence. B.By reorganizing his own words.

C.By drawing on others’ ideas. D.By making his statement briefer.

5What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To advocate a way to make group thinking more effective.

B.To demonstrate the difficulty in organizing group thinking.

C.To highlight the differences between divergence and convergence.

D.To show the advantage of group thinking over individual thinking.

  • 24、Many African people have always dreamed that one day the capitals of all African countries will be linked by high-speed railway lines. Now they have one step closer to realizing that dream.

On October 10, 2016, Africa’s first modern electrified railway, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, became fully operational. This railway, built by Chinese companies, is the first railway built using a complete set of Chinese standards outside China.

But it has not been easy for Chinese companies to win Ethiopian support for the project. The Ethiopian government once considered Western standards the best ones. But thanks to China’s outstanding performance in building and managing railways, Chinese firms ended up getting the project.

“After rounds of talks, the Ethiopian government came to realize that Chinese standards are not inferior (次于) to western ones, and more importantly, they best suit the country, " Meng Fengchao, board chairman of China Railway Construction Corp, told Xinhua.

This is just another of China’s recent achievements in railway building. China has the world’s longest railway and they make up a huge 60 percent of the world’s total. Besides length, China also does well in speed. China is the only country with trains running at 350 km per hour on lines such as Beijing-Tianjin and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railways.

Thanks to these achievements, it’s easy to forget that China wasn’t an early starter in the high-speed rail network game. Japan started 50 years ago, while Germany began 20 years ago. China only launched its high-speed railway14 years ago.

How has China’s high-speed railway been able to develop so quickly? The driving force behind the fast development has been the country’s great need for transportation.

“The high-speed railway not only covers the distance, but also connects people, information and goods, greatly boosting the regional economy, people’s lives and tourism, ” Huang Xin, an official from China Railway Corporation, told China Daily. The high-speed railway has become the transportation of choice for many Chinese people. According to China Railway Corp, about 4, 200 bullet trains run in China each day, meaning that more than 4. 5 million passengers can travel.

This is only the beginning of China’s high -speed railway development. The National Development and Reform Commission said that China plans to have 38, 000 km of high-speed railways by 2025.

【1】What can be learned about the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway?

    A.It was still under construction.

B.It links capitals of several countries.

C.It was the first electrified railway in Africa.

D.It was a combination of Chinese and West standards.

【2】What is China’s recent achievement in railway building?

A.China helps many other countries build railway.

B.Chinese standards suit most of the countries in the world.

C.China excels at both the length of railway and speed of trains.

D.China is one of the countries whose trains can run at 350km/h.

C.China’s railway accounts for less than 60% of the world’s total.

D.China’s great need for transportation has driven railway development.

【4】Which could be the best title for the text?

A.China’s Railways Go to the World.

B.The Corporation between China and Africa.

    C.The Railway Development in Africa.

D.The History of High-speed Railway in the world.
