二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A few years ago, I was giving a presentation to the CEO of a company. Through the entire meeting time, the CEO sat at the conference table with his arms tightly crossed without a smile. I was sure that he was not satisfied, but later his assistant told me her boss was impressed with my presentation. Suddenly, I realized that, it was his usual behavior. 【1】 Here are three more: ignoring the context, finding meaning in a single gesture, comparing with a proper culture.

First, context is king. The same nonverbal gestures can take on totally different meanings in different contexts. You can’t really make sense of someone’s nonverbal message unless you understand the circumstances behind it. For example, if you yawn in a staff meeting because you were up early for an international business call, let people know why you’re tired. 【2】

Then, people are constantly trying to evaluate your state of mind by monitoring your body language. But often they will assign meaning to a single nonverbal gesture. Generally speaking, people take more notice of any sign that indicates you’re in a bad mood and not to be approached. 【3】 So, you may be more comfortable standing with your arms folded across your chest, but others judge that single gesture as resistant and unapproachable.

When I talk about culture, I’m referring to a set of shared values that a group of people hold. 【4】 More importantly, they are the kind of criteria by which people judge others. We all have cultural biases that regard some nonverbal behaviors as normal and right and others as strange or wrong. What’s proper and correct in one culture may be ineffective or even rude in another.

【5】 Understanding them, and trying not to make the same ones, will help you display your nonverbal ability.

A.Such values affect how members of the group think and act.

B.Nonverbal signals are very common in our daily life.

C.These are people’s most common mistakes when they read your body language.

D.As with me, when people don’t know your usual behavior they can easily jump to the wrong conclusion.

E.Without this context, you’ll look like you’re just bored.

F.If they don’t know the context, embarrassment will appear.

G.This is because the human brain pays more attention to negative messages than it does to positive ones.

  • 22、The Dead Sea might be the most famous salty body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one. Here, we uncover some other salt lakes around the world.

    Salt Sea

The most famous of the lot—the Salt Sea—is a natural place to start. It’s technically not a sea at all, but a land salt lake. Its waters are mainly drawn from the Jordan River, and the high salinity (盐度) means no life can survive here, so don’t expect any colorful fish. However, much amusement results from the sea’s buoyancy (浮力): bring some reading material to the waters and lie back. Nature will do the rest.

    Lake Assal

Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its edges; the lake has long been at the center of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.

    Don Juan Pond

Don Juan Pond might not win any prizes for its beauty—at four inches deep, it’s little more than a pond, but worth visiting. Its salinity content of almost 40 percent makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, meaning it doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.

    Great Salt Lake

The biggest salt lake in the western hemisphere (半球) and the one that gave Salt Lake City its name, the Great Salt Lake finds its home in northern Utah. What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand beaches, but Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park both offer super hiking and biking trails, and great long views.

【1】What can you do in the Salt Sea?

    A.Appreciate some colorful fishes.

    B.Experience floating on the water.

    C.Enjoy fascinating natural views.

    D.Witness the eruption of volcanoes.

【2】What do we know about Lake Assal?

A.It’s known for being the world’s lowest point.

B.It plays a significant role in local economy.

C.It’s one of the saltiest water bodies on Earth.

D.It attracts scientists to study its environment.

【3】Which place would you go to if you like taking outdoor exercise?

    A.Salt Sea.

    B.Lake Assal.

    C.Don Juan Pond.

    D.Great Salt Lake.

  • 23、   Ever since Donald Trump was elected the president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope. In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an extremely influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family. She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.

There are always articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you. Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five?

If you just want to keep a stable nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right? There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism. They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest a huge amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance enhancement so as to improve the quality of their life and join the elites. But what’s the disadvantage of being of average quality? Do you really need to go to the gym five days a week unless you are a gym maniac (狂人)? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to be accepted into high society later?

Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to live the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and comfortable life, why bother to chase after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.
