  • 22、There are lots of nice stories about the protection of nature as humans suspend their activity however, this slowdown is not all good news. New York City, for example, has suspended its organic recycling program. That means thousands of tons of rubbish that would have been recycled last year will find their way to landfills (垃圾填埋地) instead this year.

Like other New Yorkers, I recycled my kitchen waste and other organic materials. When they are broken down, they produce methane (a gas without color or smell), which if let loose can be harmful to the atmosphere. But when controlled in a way, the methane can be put to use as alternative energy. Plus, there is a by-product fertilizer (肥料), which can be sold on the market.

Now those thousands of tons of rubbish will be trucked away to landfills in Ohio and other remote places. It’s definitely a backward step in our fight against climate change. Government leaders may get some inspiration from New York City’s Freshkills Park.

The park is a best-case scenario (设想) for what can happen to mountains of rubbish. It was originally the Freshkills Landfill which received rubbish for more than half a century. In 2001, the landfill was closed. The Freshkills Park, around three times the size of Central Park, will be opened in 2035.

What is under the park is pretty complex, even if it just looks like a grassy hill. There are a few layers, each for different purposes. As for the methane, the park has hundreds of wells to capture the gas, which is enough to power 20,000 homes. Trees are tricky at the park because their roots can’t go that far down. As well, most grasslands only have shallow-rooted grasses so that the staff can easily get access to the wellheads.

The project brings good news to the grasshopper sparrows. These birds are of conservation concern in New York State. Today, the grasshopper sparrows in New York State call this former landfill their home. So do foxes, deer and other animals.

Although it will take over a decade before the park fully opens, it has worked well so far. Besides this project, it’s expected that similarly brilliant plans for the new rubbish will come out soon. Ideally, the organic recycling program gets reenacted (重新制定) in New York City before too long. Otherwise, there are some other similarly brilliant plans for all the new rubbish that will be coming soon.

【1】What can we know about organic materials?

A.They will be replaced by other energy.

B.They are beneficial to the environment.

C.They have great value if handled properly.

D.They can be hardly controlled or recycled.

【2】What is the author’s attitude towards trucking New York City’s rubbish away?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Negative.

【3】What can we infer about the Freshkills Park?

    A.It has limited water resources.

B.It gives the landfill a new look.

C.It is very similar to Central Park.

    D.it turns farmlands into grasslands.

【4】What does the author mainly want to express in the last but one paragraph?

A.Parks are an ideal place for many animals.

B.The project aims to restore animal habitats.

C.New York has a large species of wild animals.

D.The project contributes to wildlife protection.

  • 23、   COURTESY PAUL BOZYMOWSKI-Three New York City police officers paid for a woman’s groceries rather than arresting her.

As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers ducked into a Whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama.

Once inside, the cops, Lt. Louis Sojo and Officers Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected shoplifter. The woman in question didn’t have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared, and her cheeks were wet with tears.

The cops peeked inside her bag. “All we saw was containers of food.” Cuevas told CBS New York.

    "I’m hungry," she explained quietly.

Caught red-handed, the woman no doubt expected to be sentenced to jail for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the cops had other ideas. “We’ll pay for her food,” Sojo told the surprised security guard.

There’d been no discussion among the three men. It went unsaid. Instead, they picked up the woman’s bag and accompanied her to a cash register, where each took out $10 to pay the tab. She would not be arrested today.

All the woman could do was weep in gratitude. Covering her face with a kerchief and drying her eyes, she repeated, “Thank you, thank you.”

She wasn’t the only one touched by this act of mercy. “It was a very beautiful, genuine moment,” says Paul Bozymowski, who was at the store. He was so taken by what he’d witnessed that he posted a photo on Twitter for all to see.

But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion. As Sojo told CNN, “When you look at someone’s face and see that they need you and they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this.”

1What can be learnt about the woman from the passage?

A.She had stolen in the shop several times before.

B.She was caught on the spot by three police officers.

C.She was found innocent and would not be arrested.

D.She was forced to commit the crime due to the dilemma of life.

2Paul Bozymowski posted a photo on Twitter to   .

A.appeal for sympathy for the people in need B.express his gratitude to the police officers

C.show more people the cops’ act of kindness D.record the unforgettable moment in his life

3What drove the three police officers to pay for the woman?

A.Their great devotion to work B.A deep sense of being human

C.The attraction of the public attention D.Their different attitude towards shoplifting

  • 24、   Many people spend more than four hours per day on WeChat, and it is redefining the word “friend.” Does friending someone on social media make him or her your friend in real life?

Robin Dunbar, a professor at Oxford University, found that only 15, of the 150 Facebook friends the average user has, could be counted as actual friends and only five as close friends. WeChat may show a similar pattern.

Those, with whom you attended a course together, applied for the same part-time job, went to a party and intended to cooperate but failed, take up most of your WeChat friends. In chat records, the only message may be a system notice, “You have accepted somebody’s friend request”. Sometimes when seeing some photos shared on “Moments”, you even need several minutes to think about when you became friends. Also, you may be disturbed by mass messages sent from your unfamiliar “friends”, including requests for voting for their children or friends, links from Pinduoduo.com (a Chinese e-commerce platform that allows users to buy items at lower prices if they purchase in groups) and cookie-cutter blessings in holidays.

You would have thought about deleting this type of “friends” and sort out your connections. But actually you did not do that as you were taught that social networking is valuable to one’s success. Besides, it would be really awkward if they found that you have unfriended them already. Then, you keep increasing your “friends” in social media and click “like” on some pictures that you are not really interested. But the fact is that deep emotional connections do not come with the increasing number of your friends in social media.

If the number of your friends reaches 150, maintaining these relationships can be tough to you, and sometimes even will make you anxious. According to Robin Dunbar, 150 is the limit of the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships.

1What can we learn from Robin Dunbar’s finding in Paragraph 2?

A.A Facebook user has 250 friends on average.

B.Most of the social media friends can be actual friends.

C.Among our social media friends, only a few people matter.

D.Only 15 people of a person’s Facebook friends can be close friends.

2What does the third paragraph tell us about most of your WeChat friends?

A.You have deep communication with them.

B.You benefit a lot from their mass messages.

C.You just have a nodding acquaintance with them.

D.You become friends with them in important occasions.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.We will be anxious if we make friends online.

B.We should avoid making any friends in social media.

C.We should make as many friends as possible in social media.

D.We have difficulty managing relationships with over 150 people.
