二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Many things about us, such as our accent (口音), behavior and personality, can show others where we are from, but did you know the same idea applies to facial (面部的) movements and your body?

While it's true we all smile when we're happy and nod our head when we agree with others, many studies have shown that small differences can correctly show your ethnicity (种族渊源) and background.

One such study came from researchers Hillary Elfenbein and Abigail A. Marsh. They showed a, group of Americans two collections of photos of Japanese and Japanese Americans. It was only when these photos showed facial expressions that the study group correctly guess their ethnicity.

Besides facial expressions, did you know your body also shows your culture through movements? According to the Atlantic, the Americans always walk with larger strides (大步) and a noticeable arm movement compared to most Europeans. Unlike them, Japanese people walk with more shoulder and less arm movement. Often, your walking style comes from your parents, and recently Chinese technology company Watrix said their technology can identify (识别) people just from their walking.

One famous example is Russian President Vladimir Putin. As a former KGB agent (间谍) for 15 years, he was trained to keep his "gun arm" close to his weapon. Even today, as president, when he walks, he still hardly moves his right arm while keeping his left arm swinging naturally.

Another common tell is how one counts numbers on their fingers. In the UK, three would be shown with the middle three fingers, whereas the thumb, index (食指), and middle finger would be used in Germany. Furthermore, in Japan, five would be shown with a closed fist.

All of these go to show that we can communicate as much with our bodies and faces as we do with our voices.

【1】What did the study by Hillary Elfenbein and Abigail A. Marsh find?

A.Our accent, behavior and personality can show our ethnicity.

B.Smiling or nodding your head has the same meaning around the world.

C.Facial expressions can show where people are from.

D.East Asians have fewer facial expressions than Westerners.

【2】What point does the author make by using Putin's example?

A.Body movements can show your background.

B.Walking styles can show your personality.

C.Your career determines your walking style.

D.It is impossible to change your walking style.

【3】What is the purpose of this article?

A.To ask readers to respect cultural differences.

B.To tell readers that body language shows a lot about you.

C.To explain how walking styles are different across the world.

D.To tell readers how to use body language to communicate.

  • 22、No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are five tips to help you make it through the first days at a new job:

1.First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress code (rules about what you can wear to work). If so, be sure to follow it. No matter what, always be neat and clean.

2.Get to work on time. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.

3.Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to co-workers. These co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around.

4.Ask a lot of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.

5.Never be the first one to leave. Observe what your co-workers do around quitting time (下班时间). It does not look good for you to be eager to leave.

1Before you arrive at work, you should __________.

    A.dress in a right way

    B.introduce yourself quickly

    C.know your duties

    D.know your co-workers well

【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

B.You should ask your co-workers for your duties.

C.You should not be eager to go back home.

D.You are required to arrive 15 minutes earlier.

【3】In the fourth paragraph, the underlined word supervisor may be a

    A.visitor B.teacher C.workmate  D.leader

【4】What is the best title for this passage?

    A.Getting a New Job

    B.Tips on How to Work

    D. The Importance of Co-workers

  • 23、In the 1970s, a psychologist named J.P.Guilford dared to conduct a famous study of creativity—the nine-dot puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page.

All the participants in his study limited the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement (束缚) and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford to jump to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.

The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase “thinking outside the box” became metaphors for creativity. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking. Management consultants even used this puzzle when making sales talk to prospective clients. Because the solution is deceptively simple, clients tended to admit they should have thought of it themselves. Because they hadn’t, they were obviously not as creative or smart as they had previously thought and needed to call in creative experts.

The smash hit carried the world before one until two different research teams-Clarke Burnham with Kenneth Davis, and Joscph Alba with Robert Weinberg—ran another experiment, using the same puzzle but a different research procedure and bothered to check the facts.

Both teams followed the same way of dividing participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told that the solution required the lines to be drawn outside the imaginary box bordering the dots. Most people assume that 60 percent to 90 percent of the group given the clue would solve the puzzle easily. However only 25 percent did. In statistical terms, this 5 percent improvement over the subjects of Guilford’s original study is insignificant.

Solving this problem requires people to literally think outside the box. Yet participants’ performance was not improved even when they were given specific instructions to do so. That this advice is useless should effectively have killed off the much widely circulated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking stimulates receptivity. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth.

【1】What did the nine-dot puzzle study focus on?

    A.Visual perception

    B.Practical experience

    C.Thinking patterns

    D.Theoretical knowledge.

【2】What can be inferred from paragraph 3?

A.The clients were less creative than they had been.

B.The nine-dot puzzle was beneficial in solving various problems.

C.Outside-the-box thinking enjoyed strong popularity and appeal.

D.Management consultants considered themselves creative experts.

【3】Which of the following best describes the follow-up experiment?

    A.Revealing

    B.Mysterious.

    C.Misleading.

    D.Groundless.

【4】Which is the best title for the passage?

    A.Nine-Dot Puzzle:A Magic Test

    B.Solving Puzzle:A Key To Creativity

C.Creative Thinking:We Fell For The Trap

D.Thinking Outside the Box:A Misguided Idea

  • 24、   New research has found that grey seals can simulate(模仿) human speech and songs. The study carried out by Dr Amanda Stansbury and Professor Vincent Janik,at the University of St Andrews, found that grey seals use the same sound production system as humans due to having similar vocal tracts(声道).

Three young grey seals—Zola,Gandalf and Janice—were monitored from birth by Stansbury and Janik to determine their natural talents.Once this process was complete, the researchers began teaching the seals to simulate common seal sounds or noises a seal might normally hear from a herd mate in the wild. Fish was used to encourage the seals to come out of the water and sing a series of notes.Stansbury would record the seals’own sounds and play them back. The seals quickly learnt that if they sang back the same notes, they would be rewarded with fish.

Once the seals were familiar with this process and could easily copy these basic sounds,Stansbury and Janik used higher and longer tones(音调)and unfamiliar vowels(元音)from human speech. The seals were then rewarded for matching these new sounds.Stansbury even used some combinations to simulate songs that no seal would be expected

to produce under natural circumstances. Zola had a gift for copying up to ten notes of songs such as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and the theme song of Star Wars. Gandalf and Janice were better at accurately reproducing combinations of human vowel sounds.

Stansbury said,“I was amazed how well the seals copied the model sounds we played to them.Copies were not perfect, but given that these are not typical seal sounds,it is pretty impressive. Our study really shows how flexible seal voices are.”

After one year of working with the researchers, the seal pups were released back into the wild. “This study gives us a better understanding of the development of vocal learning,a skill that is important for human language development.”Janik believes this knowledge can help to develop new methods to study speech problems.

1What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.A research finding on grey seals. B.Grey seals’learning environments.

C.Humans’sound production system. D.A comparison of humans and grey seals.

2In the study, fish would be given when the seals   .

A.made funny noises B.came out of the water

C.repeated the same notes D.copied typical fish sounds

3What can we find about Zola based on the research?

A.It can copy some musical sounds played to her. B.It is good at copying human vowel sounds.

C.It is smarter than Gandalf and Janice. D.It likes singing children’s songs.

4What does Janik think of the research result?

A.It shows the living environments of grey seals.

B.It leads to a better understanding of human evolution.

C.It raises an awareness of the need to protect grey seals.

D.It inspires new methods for research on speech problems.
