二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In a survey, 1,500 people were asked the same question and were then divided into two different groups based on their answers. 1,245 people went into the first group thinking that money was the most important thing and they would consider doing what they wanted to do later. The other group, made up of 255 people, preferred following their passion(热情) and trusted that money would then follow.

Guess what happened to both groups 20 years later: 101 of surveyed people became millionaires. And only one of them came from the first group. The remaining 100 all came from those who chose a career according to their interest.

It is so common to hear friends and relatives complaining about work, workplace, coworkers, etc. Recent research shows there are 20% more heart attacks(心脏病发作) on Mondays than on any other day in Japan. Perhaps this is not surprising when you look at how most of us choose our careers.

We have few or even no choices of careers. Sometimes, even if we have choices, we are more likely to choose the one with better pay. But all the rewards we get from our work largely depend on productivity(生产能力) and few things in life affect productivity more than passion does. The world’s largest chocolate producer, Patrick De Maeseneire, once said, “Producing great chocolate is all about being passionate.” Passion creates the desire and energy required to do what others think is impossible.

Not loving our work is something that prevents us from reaching our goals. Doing what we love to do not only makes us effective but also makes others feel the same.

【1】What was probably the question of the survey mentioned in Pare.1?

A.What would you like to do in the future?

B.How would you like to choose your career?

C.Do you think money can buy happiness?

D.What is the most important thing in your life?

【2】There are more heart attacks on Mondays in Japan probably because ________ .

    A.Mondays are the busiest workdays

B.most people in Japan have heart disease

C.most employees hate to return to their jobs.

D.most employees are dissatisfied with their weekends

【3】What can we learn about the people in the second group?

    A.They don’t need much money.

    B.They work with interest.

    C.They have better-paid jobs.

    D.They have more career choices.

【4】What message does the author want to give us?

    A.Productivity really matters.

    B.Interest builds confidence.

    C.Choosing a career is difficult.

    D.Passion leads to success.

  • 22、Coming to the end of my assistantship in Barcelona, I start to think about what the future might hold. It’s been seven months and a few days since I arrived here and things have changed so much in what some might call a short period of time.

When I first arrived in Terrassa I was excited and nervous to start a new adventure in a country I love. The first few days seemed so long ago now, trying to find a place to live, organising my timetable with the schools, meeting new people. After a couple of weeks, the excitement started to fade, however, and homesickness started to set in. It wasn’t a powerful homesickness but enough to make me spend more than a few nights thinking about family and friends back home, wondering if I should be there with them.

All that started to change after meeting some new friends and spending good time with them, practising languages, eating together and seeing new places as a group. I suppose we should never forget how important it is to have good people in your life, because they can make such a difference.

Coming back to Terrassa after visiting home for Christmas felt like returning to a second home, to a place that was mine with people I cared about. Things got even more busy and more people came into my life; new friends, romance and a whole lot of good food flowed by in what seems to have been weeks, not months.

Now, looking forward, there are some decisions to make. Should I return home to Scotland and move on with life there or try to extend my time here, perhaps make it something permanent? To travel and visit other places is one of the most meaningful things you can do in life. Experiencing other cultures, learning about the world, it’s such an important thing to do if you have the means. My thought from my experience so far is to travel and try new things whenever getting the opportunity.

【1】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.The author made a wrong decision.

B.The author came to Terrassa to find a job.

C.It’s hard for the author to adapt to the life there.

D.The author’s mood changed a lot over time.

【2】What does paragraph 3 focus on?

    A.The importance of making friends.

B.The diversity of characters and cultures.

    C.The variety of people’s life.

D.The necessity of basic learning skills.

【3】What does the author benefit from the experience in Barcelona?

    A.Learning a foreign language is a must.

B.It’s very important to try new things.

C.His own country is always the best.

D.Hard work is the key to success.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.How to Make a Great Difference?

B.Ways of fully Changing Your Life

C.What does the Future Hold for Me?

D.A Decision to Work as an Assistant

  • 23、Going to school can be a demanding obstacle for many, but some people are well prepared for the challenge. For Dylan Kuehl, being a student has been a challenging joy. The 38-year-old has had a passion for studying, and believes that the more he learns, the more he learns to see the world differently. This open-minded approach and enthusiastic mindset are all the most inspiring as Kuehl has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).

He knows the struggle of breaking new ground from a lifetime of experience of being different. He has sustained his ability to shine as a unique individual by graduating from The Evergreen State College in Washington State. Kuehl is the first person with Down syndrome in the college’s 51-year history to earn a four-year degree. Not only that, but this also makes him the first person with Down syndrome in Washington state to achieve this remarkable milestone.

Kuehl’s passion for creativity led him to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree. He enjoyed classes in painting and dance as part of his curriculum, but his primary focus was writing. Out of 900 graduates, he was one of three to be selected to give an address at the graduation ceremony.

“Celebrate your abilities,” Kuehl tells his fellow students in his speech. “Live your life with ambition and pride.”We can all take a leaf out of this inspiring man’s book which is about enthusiasm, positivity, determination and a whole lot of motivating hard work.

Aside from graduating college, Kuehl is also an entrepreneur (企业家). He started his own visual and performing arts company called DK Arts in 2005, where he sells his own artwork and glass jewelry. He plays the drums in a band called Living the Dream, advocating for inclusion through his music.

【1】What does Kuehl think his studying is?

A.A must for his own business.

B.A way of viewing the world.

  • 24、Have you heard the news? Climate change is impacting the way our world works. Whether you believe it is a human-made condition or a natural cycle doesn’t matter at this point. 【1】 That means the impact of heatwaves globally can cause great changes to how all of us approach life.

Record-breaking heat struck the Pacific Northwest in June. When the first heat dome (热穹顶) formed in 2021, it sent temperatures through the roof in places where there is no air conditioning in homes. Portland and Seattle both reached more than 108°F, with the former topping out at 116°F. 【2】 It caused temperatures around Sacramento to increase quickly above 120°F in localized spots. Canada recorded its highest temperature ever in Lytton at 49.6°C, breaking the 45℃ reading from 1957. It’s the highest temperature recorded above 50N latitude.

【3】 If you take a trip to Lake Shasta or Lake Mead, you can see how much the water levels have lowered in recent years. With the dry conditions advancing the heat, water is becoming lacking. Most heat waves last for about five days, although they can continue to exist if high-pressure systems get blocked.

【4】 The overnight low temperatures since 1895 have been increasing at nearly twice the rate of afternoon highs, and the ten warmest minimum (最低的) temperatures in the United States ever recorded have all happened since 2002.

What can we do to make changes? It starts by switching from the burning of fossil fuels. By reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that reflects heat and sunlight, we can dissipate (消散) the heat more easily.

We’re running out of time to act. Things will keep getting worse until changes are made. 【5】

A.We know the world is getting warmer.

    B.Long-term drought advances the problem.

C.It will take all of us to battle this problem together.

D.In July, another heat dome formed in Northern California.

E.Once summer comes along, 100 degree days begin to appear.

F.It’s not just during the day that we need to worry about things.

G.Climate change can also cause some regions to be abnormally cool.
