二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)

Parents are creating an “I want it now” generation by indulging children’s every demand at Christmas, say experts.Youngsters are becoming increasingly selfish, claim the education analysts.

Consumersavvy children are forcing their families into racking up huge debts and risk becoming spoilt and dissatisfied in the future.

Behavioural consultant Chris Calland said,“Parents are desperate to make Christmas into a magical fairy tale for their kids. There’s nothing wrong with that as such. The problem arises when it means always giving into all our children’s demands—even if they are beyond our price range or not ageappropriate.”

Ms Calland, who runs “Santa Says No” style sessions with colleague Nicky Hutchinson, added,“Many of us go into so much debt providing the gifts our children want that we spend the rest of the year paying off the bills.Yet so often the parcels we’ve carefully wrapped, once opened, are just pushed away because the very thing our little boy or girl was once so desperate for, they have now lost interest in.”

Ms Calland and Ms Hutchinson have drawn up a list of guidelines to help parents manage their offspring’s Christmas lists this year. They say that adults can actually improve their relationships with their children by resisting “pester (纠缠) power”.

Ms Calland said,“All too often we say yes because we want an easier life when the fact is that we’re only building up problems for the future. We are helping create a generation of youngsters who are blind to the needs of others and the necessity of hard work.”

“Children learn fast—if we sometimes change our mind, they quickly realise it might be worth lying on the floor and screaming for it.Make sure you and your partner are working together on this.Be consistent. And try not to get caught up in competition with other families or friends.”

【1】What is the main problem with the “I want it now” generation?

    A.They are quite selfcentered.

B.They like to live in fairy tales.

C.They waste a lot of money on gifts.

B.To keep children’s interest in the gifts.

C.To tell parents how to say no to children’s demands.

D.To advise parents on what gifts to buy for children.

【3】According to the passage,we can infer that Ms Calland intends to ________.

    A.analyze children’s behavior

    B.give advice to parents

    C.introduce a new generation

    D.give her support to parents

【4】Ms Calland would agree that parents should________.

A.buy nothing for children at Christmas

    B.choose gifts carefully for children

C.let children choose their own gifts

    D.avoid competing with others

  • 22、When you buy fresh-cut flowers, do you think about where they came from? You might think they were grown somewhere nearby. The reality, though, is that the cut flower trade is increasingly International. Today, thanks to airplanes and high-tech cooling systems, even the most delicate flower be exported and sold thousands of kilometers away from where it was grown.

The Netherlands handles about 60 percent of the world’s cut flowers. And its auction houses(拍卖行)are very large---Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam, is auction house in the sense that Tokyo is a city, or Everest a mountain. About 120 soccer fields would fill its main building. Nineteen million flowers are sold here on an average day.

The Netherlands is also a world leader in developing new flower varieties. Dutch companies and the government invest a great amount of money in flower research. Their scientists look for ways to lengthen a flower’s vase life, to strengthen flowers to prevent them from being damaged while traveling, and also to strengthen the natural fragrance of the flowers.

There are also many other places with a better climate for growing flowers, and the climate of Ecuador is almost perfect. With predictable rainy periods and 12 hours of sunlight each day, Ecuador’s roses are famous for their large heads and long, straight stems(茎). Every year, Ecuador sells about 500 million flowers to the U.S. alone. The industry has brought employment opportunities and a stronger economy to the country. “My family has TV now. There are radios.” says Yolanda Quishpe, 20, who picked roses for four years.

To others, the increasingly international nature of the flower trade is very bad news. In recent years local growers in the U.S. faced huge competition from international flower companies, and many lost their businesses. Lina Hale, an independent rose grower said her father had predicted the situation in the 1980s. “I see a train coming down the track,” he warned her, “and it’s coming straight towards us.”

【1】What do we know about Aalsmeer?

    A.It’s very large.

    B.It’s as big as Tokyo.

C.19 million flowers are grown there.

D.60% of the Netherland’s flowers are sold there.

【2】What is one aspect of the Netherlands’ flower research?

    A.How to increase flower production.

B.How to avoid climate’s effect on flowers.

C.How to speed up the process of flowering.

D.How to keep flowers fresh during transportation.

【3】What does the author want to show through Yolanda Quishpe’s words?

    A.Flowers from Ecuador are beautiful.

B.Ecuador could grow even more flowers.

C.The flower trade in Ecuador benefits the local.

D.Rose-picking is a very popular job in Ecuador.

【4】What Lina Hale’s father said suggested that ______.

A.he was excited to see the train

B.he knew his business would be affected

C.he was sure customers wouldn’t want

D.he thought trains were a new way to deliver flowers

  • 23、A cheap printed sensor could transmit wildfire warnings. Wildfires have recently destroyed regions across the world, and their gravity is increasing. Hoping to reduce harm, researchers led by Yapei Wang, a Chinese chemist of Renmin University, say they have developed an inexpensive sensor to detect such fires earlier with less effort.

Current detection methods rely heavily on human watchfulness, which can delay an effective response. Most wildfires are reported by the general public, and other alerts come from routine foot patrols and watchtower observers. Passing planes and satellites also occasionally spot something, but “the fire first appears on the ground,” Wang says. “When you see the fire from the sky, it is too late.”

The team says its new sensor can be placed near tree trunks' bases and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is a dramatic temperature increase. That heat also powers the sensor itself, without replacing batteries. The team printed the substances onto ordinary paper to create a sensor for just $ 0.40.

But improving coordination among the different agencies involved in firefighting is even more crucial to address, says Graham Kent, an earthquake expert at the University of Nevada, Reno, who was not part of the study. Kent is director of ALERTWildfire, a network that uses cameras and crowd sourcing to watch for fires in California, Nevada and Oregon. “The whole way that you respond to a fire until it's put out is like a ballet,” he says. “You'd have to choreograph (设计) it just so, with resources precisely allocated at the right time and place from detection to confirmation to assignment to extinguishment (熄灭). Fire detection is just step one.”

Wang says his team's next steps are to extend the device's signal range beyond the current 100 meters, which can limit practical use, and to develop a protective shield for it. The Transmitter’s effectiveness, he notes, will also need to be tested in the field ahead.

【1】What does the underlined word “gravity” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Pull.

    B.Extinction.

    C.Popularity.

    D.Seriousness.

【2】What do we know about the sensor?

    A.Its price remains high.

    B.Its batteries are replaceable.

C.It can detect fires earlier and easier.

    D.It can reduce firefighters' pain.

【3】What does Kent mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Firefighting is easy but crucial.

B.Technology is the key to extinguishing a fire.

C.Putting out a fire is a cooperative and orderly activity.

D.The resources of fire detection are precisely allocated.

【4】What's the plan for the new sensor according to Wang?

    A.Improving and testing it.

    B.Limiting its use and transmission.

C.Examing and reducing its signal range.

D.Getting it on the market ahead of time.

  • 24、China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) adopt a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies.

The core behind TCM is that the human body’s life is the consequence of the balance between yin and yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.

One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法), means insertion (插入) of needles into superficial (表皮的) structures of the body—usually at acupoints (穴位)—to restore the yin-yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion (灸法), which involves burning the mugwort (艾叶) on or near the skin at an acupoint.

The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is practiced today is Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work of TCM and is considered the most representative medical text in China.

Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.

    A.It distinguishes acupuncture from moxibustion.

B.It’s a foundation of world medical research.

D.It greatly contributes to the development of TCM.

【3】What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce TCM to the world.

B.To review the development of TCM.

C.To tell TCM and Western medicine apart.
