二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There’s a lot of anxiety around how young people, particularly teenagers, use the Internet but new research by Talk Talk suggests some of these fears may be overblown.

In a recent study, 2,000 young people aged 13—16 and the parents of the same teenagers, were interviewed about their attitudes to technology and loneliness.

The teens were mainly optimistic about technology and its uses. 51 percent said that during times when they felt lonely, tech provided a solution to their loneliness, enabling them to make new friends, receive support and advice, as well as allowing them to read positive comments online. However, social media was considered as cause for feeling lonely by 12 percent of teens, who said they felt lonely because they didn’t have many friends on social media.

When it comes to the parents, on the other hand there is an education gap between worrying about the Internet, and knowing what to do about it. For example, 70 percent of parents worry about their teens using the Internet, and knowing what to do about it. For example, 70 percent of parents worry about their teens using the Internet, but 65 percent said they did not limit the hours their teen spends using social media and tech, and 70 percent reported they don’t use parent protection controls and software. Around 37 percent said they feel ill-equipped or unsure about how to manage their teens online.

It seems like when it comes to the Internet, the main problem is with the parents not understanding what they’re doing. Research by Oxford University academics found there was little evidence linking screen time to mental health problems in teenagers. The study used a mixture of self-reporting techniques as well as time-use diaries.

We’re still learning about how things like social media affect our health and well being, but at least this research shows that the Generation Z (those born between 1996-2010) may have more of a hold on tech and its effects than their parents do.

【1】What did the research by Talk Talk find?

A.More teens think tech helps rid loneliness.

B.Most parents limit their children’s use of the Internet.

C.Social media is destroying the parent-child relationship.

D.Teens prefer to communicate with their net friends rather than their parents.

【2】How did most parents respond to their teens’ tech use?

    A.They reported it to teachers.

B.They had no idea how to solve it.

C.They felt unsure if it was really worrying.

D.They began to control their teens screen time.

【3】What is implied in the last paragraph?

    A.Less social media, better health.

B.Social media is the main cause of loneliness.

C.Social media shouldn’t be allowed in high schools.

D.Don’t worry too much about teenagers’ use of tech.

【4】The author develops the text mainly by ______.

    A.giving typical examples.

    B.providing research results.

    C.stating different arguments.

D.presenting a cause and its effects.

  • 22、I got this strange idea in my eight grade: to run for the president of the student Union. It is not a surprising decision for most outgoing, popular people. But I was neither. In fact I tended to daydream, read books that were not on the required list, and sit at the far corner of the cafeteria with the only two friends I had, Denise and Janice.

However, Claire, my enemy, motivated me to sign up to run against her. Denise decided we should form a group of advisors to get me elected. We met every day, right after school, reviewing every student. We tried to figure out why our schoolmates might want to vote, in their own interests for me or(more likely) against Claire.

We created cascades, a term we learned from Denise’s sister. In other words, we looked for students who were most likely to influence a group of other students. Those are the people that one of us approached first. My narrow victory was a surprise to many including, frankly, the three of us.

That’s how I got my first taste of the power of the so-called Collective Intelligence and it turned out to be the best method of succeeding in various work.

When a group commits to supporting each other by meeting regularly and obeying the negotiated rules, remarkable things happen. We tend to bring to bring the the the best out other, as thousands have learned around the world. When individuals become tight-knit teams, we become happier and higher-performing with and for each other. It is never too late for us to start our own advising group of no more than seven members around a strong sweet spot of common interest—which will help us achieve something different and more meaningful over the years.

  • 24、When I was a young postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge, I met a bearded professor at a fancy dinner. He asked me, “So young man, what do you do?” I told him I was working on the genetics (遗传学) of childhood obesity (肥胖症). “Ha! Do you know what your problem is?” he replied. “You give fat people an excuse.”

The professor’s reply threw me. I was about to push back, when it occurred to me that this view was shared by much of society. Obesity is seen as a problem of physics; people just need to eat less and move more. But although how we get to our body weight is reliant on physics, the real question is why? Why do some people love food, while for others it’s simply fuel? Besides powerful societal and cultural influences, there are equally powerful genetic factors that influence our eating, and hence our body weight.

Large population-based studies, such as UK Biobank, a survey of nearly half a million adults, have helped to reveal the genetic architecture underlying differences in body size. Butthe childhood obesity data do not exist. And that’s a problem, because we know that children with obesity probably will grow into adults with obesity. Thus, understanding the genetics and natural history of childhood obesity will play a key role in its treatment and prevention.

Luckily, there is hope. D-CYPHR, a genetics research programme, is open to every child. It aims to create a truly inclusive research sample and investigate a range of conditions, for which obesity is a major contributing factor. D-CYPHR is ambitious and will face challenges in creating a truly inclusive research sample. But if it does, it will circumvent many of the problems in adult health research by building inclusivity in from the beginning.

You can help pioneer new treatments for millions of people by helping unlock the power hiding in your DNA. Now, a nationwide movement for ages 0—15 is being held and all you need to do is spit (吐) in a tube and complete a short health and lifestyle questionnaire.

【1】What’s the tone carried in the professor’s reply?

    A.Dismissive.

    B.Sympathetic.

    C.Delighted.

    D.Admiring

【2】What is a limitation of the previous studies on obesity?

    A.Limited size of participants.

    B.Inaccurate sample analysis.

C.Lack of data on childhood obesity.

D.Failure to map adults’ genetic code.
