21、A new device works like a solar panel (太阳电池板), except it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun to produce electricity. Instead, it uses energy from the cold night sky.
In the center of this device is a thermoelectric generator (热电发电机), which uses the temperature difference between Earth and outer space to create electricity.
As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed under a transparent shelter and surrounded with materials that keep heat out. It stays cooler than the surrounding air by getting rid of any heat it absorbs as infrared (红外线的) radiation. That radiation can zip up through the transparent cover and on toward outer space.
The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate, which is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get several degrees centigrade cooler than the bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested the device one clear December night in Stanford, Calif. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of the device. That was just enough power to light a small electric lamp. Further improvements might develop its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter.
“It’s a very clever idea,” says Yuan Yang, a materials scientist who works at Columbia University in New York City. “The device still needs improving,” he notes. “But this new device may be useful for backup power,” Yang says, “It might also provide a bit of energy to people living in areas that lack electricity.”
“The device could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices,” says Aaswath Raman, a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. What’s more, this may be useful in areas that don’t see sunlight for months at a time, Raman adds.
【1】What is the limitation with the tested device?
A.It won’t be expanded to be much larger.
B.It fails to produce electricity fast enough.
C.It is unable to power small electric lamps.
D.It produces a limited amount of electricity.
【2】In paragraph 6, Yuan Yang mainly intends to________.
A.evaluate the device on a positive basis
B.point out the problems with the device
C.explain the research work for the device
D.comment on Aaswath Raman’s prediction

A.Lamps Are Powered by the Energy from the Cold Night Sky
B.A Generator Producing Electricity Has Been Applied in Many Areas
C.Scientists Have Made a Breakthrough in Harvesting Green Energy
D.A Device Uses Energy from the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
22、The Best Road Trips Around the World
Road trips are a great way to really get to know a country and to see more than just the major cities and tourist sites. Here are some of the best road trip routes around the world.
North Coast 500, Scotland
The North Coast 500 is an 830-kilometer route in the Scottish Highlands. It’s recommended that travelers spend at least five to seven days driving it. Starting in the city of Inverness, it follows the coast around the north of Scotland. Along the way, there are ancient castles, beautiful views, including mountains, valleys and beaches.
Sunshine Coast, Canada
The Sunshine Coast takes you through an amazing coastal drive, historic towns, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It has some of the best mountain biking and hiking in the country with well marked paths and few crowds. The beloved Canadian TV Series, The Beachcombers was also filmed here 20 years ago!
Garden Route, South Africa
The Garden Route is on the south coast of South Africa. It starts in Mossel Bay and ends at Storms River, and is about 200 kilometers long. There is so much to see, for example, travelers can visit the Shamwari Game Reserve for a chance to see elephants, lions and rhinos, while the route’s lakes, forests and beaches are said to be the most beautiful part of the country.
Great Ocean Road, Australia
Australia’s Great Ocean Road is along the south coast of Victoria. Travelers can start in Torquay, near Melbourne, and drive west to Fairy. Travelers can visit Port Campbell to see the most breathtaking masterpiece by nature — the 12 Apostles, a group of rock towers in the sea, some of which are 45 meters tall. And at Grampians National Park, they can see rock art from 22,000 years ago.
【1】What can travelers do on the Sunshine Coast?

23、Encouraging children to think about the feelings of others improves their creativity, new research suggests.
The findings are from a year-long study with Design and Technology (D&T) year 9 students (aged 13 to 14) at two London schools. Students at one school spent the year following course-required lessons, while the other group’s D&T lessons used some thinking tools which are aimed at developing students’ ability to have empathy, while solving real-world problems.
Both groups of students were judged for creativity at both the start and end of the school year using a perfect test.
The results showed a significant increase in creativity among students who use the thinking tools. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of the students who followed the required curriculum, were 11% higher than those following D&T lessons. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the D&T group were 78% higher than the required-course group.
The researchers also examined specific types within the test: such as “emotional expressiveness” and “open-mindedness”. Students from the D&T group again scored much higher in these types, showing that obvious progress in empathy was improving the overall creativity scores.
Nicholl, Senior Lecturer in D&T Education, said: “When I taught Design and Technology, I didn’t see children as someone who would one day do good to society; they were people who needed to be ready to go into the world at 18. Teaching children to understand another person’s feelings and experiences is about building a society where we appreciate each other’s point of view. Surely that is something we want education to do.”
【1】What’s the purpose of adopting the thinking tools?
A.To understand the feelings of others.
B.To develop students’ creativity.
C.To design new technologies.
D.To deal with realistic problems.
【2】Which of the following is true about the study?
A.Both the groups took courses required by the curriculum.
B.The two groups of students were tested twice during the one-year study.
C.Students from the required course scored much higher in these specific types.
D.Creativity among the students from the D&T lessons has been slightly improved.
【3】What can be inferred from Nicholl’s words?
A.He is indifferent to whether the children benefit society.
B.The D&T lessons can be an effective way to improve grades.
C.Education is expected to build a society with different opinions appreciated.
D.The D&T lessons surely need to be taken before the children go into the world.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Emotional Education Matters
B.Teaching Students to Be Better
C.Creativity Offers Great Chances
D.Empathy Significantly Improves Creativity
