21、 Many people want to leave the polluted and crowded cities and move to the countryside. There people may find place that is equivalent (相同的) to the Paradise Lost of John Milton. Besides, living in the countryside can be much less expensive than in the cities. 【1】

Most of the rural areas do not have good educational facilities. They either lack the schools, colleges and universities or the quality of education is not satisfying. 【3】. Therefore, after high school, students are required to move to a city for further education.

Weather is another factor for the drawback (不利条件) of living in the countryside. Blizzards (暴风雪), flooding, and rainstorms are some of the common phenomena in the rural areas. 【5】. Otherwise, you will be stuck down under the snow for days until help can reach you.

22、When I was a teenager, I knew nothing about mental health. If you had talked about “safe spaces”, I would have thought that you meant a bank. What’s more, I didn’t care about mental health. Why would I? Like my Dad always used to say, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it!” But, unfortunately my mental health did “break”.
Aged 17 I developed anorexia (厌食症) . It took me a good few years to realize I had a problem, but I never went to get help because I never felt ill enough. When I was 23, I was diagnosed as severe anorexia. I was treated at a hospital. People are always interested to know what helped me recover. It was simple: comedy.
Let me explain.
The word “comedy” is believed to develop from the Ancient Greek meaning “to reveal”. It is comedy’s job to “reveal” things, to explain and understand. This was something I turned to when I was in recovery from anorexia. I’d never been able to explain what was going on inside my head; trying to explain what’s going on in your mind is like trying to explain a color to someone who’s blind. So, humor became a way of understanding things. Now it’s become a way of helping other people.
After I recovered from my illness with the help of comedy, I come up with a six-week comedy course aimed at people with mental health difficulties. By doing the course with like-minded people, it builds lasting friendships, fights loneliness and talks about mental health normally. When audiences are laughing, they must be listening, and when they’re listening, they can learn. It’s this unique opportunity that enables comedy to reach people in a completely different way to all the sad stories, shocking statistics and dry documentaries about mental health problems.
Comedy was necessary to my recovery. I know I’m not alone in that. So, I want to pay that forward and show other people that their mental health doesn’t have to be “broke” before they can “fix it”.
【1】Why was the author’s illness mentioned?
A.To show the seriousness of his illness.
B.To lead to the topic — Comedy.
C.To express his loneliness and pain.
D.To assess his mental status.
【2】Why did the author develop a comedy course?
A.To make friends with like-minded people.
B.To find out the true meaning of “comedy”.
C.To study how to fight against loneliness.
D.To help more people recover from mental illness.
【3】What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.Comedy.
B.Recovery.
C.Mental health difficulties.
D.Kindness.
【4】What can you infer about the author from the text?
A.He is generous.
B.He is helpful.
C.He is badly ill.
D.He is unappealing.

24、A 1.6-metre-tall robot may soon become the best friend for lonely elderly people, as Chinese scientists are making the final sprint (冲刺) towards its market launch (投放), said a senior researcher on the robot project on Saturday.
“We are working on testing the exact functions and ways to reduce the cost in preparations for an expected market launch of the robot in two to three years,” said Li Ruifeng, a member of the project.
He said the team hoped to reduce the cost so that the robot can be priced at 30, 000 to 50, 000 yuan, which is expected to be an affordable price for most of China’s better-off families.
The robot has been developed with the functions of fetching food and medicine, sounding alarms in case of water or gas leakage, sending texts or video images via wireless communications, and even singing a song or playing chess to entertain its masters.
Li said that the robot, developed independently in China, has technology at the same level as those in Western labs.
China set about the research of the robot in 2007, when it was listed as a national key project. It is backed by government funding.
