二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Now that you know the answer to the question “What is artificial intelligence?” you might be wondering where it is. The fact of the matter is that AI is everywhere in our world. Here are just a few common ways you interact with it on a daily basis without even realizing it.

    Gaming

One of the most famous examples of early AI was the chess computer we noted earlier, Deep Blue. In 1997, the computer was able to think much like a human chess player and beat chess grand master Garry Kasparov. This artificial intelligence technology has since progressed to what we now see in Xboxes, PlayStations and computer games. When you’re playing against an opponent in a game, AI is running that character to anticipate your moves and react. If you’re a gamer, you’ll definitely be interested in the difference between AR and VR—and how AI relates to both.

    Cars

Another example of artificial intelligence is collision correction in cars and self-driving vehicles. The AI anticipates what other drivers will do and reacts to avoid collisions using sensors and cameras as the computer’s eyes. While current self-driving cars still need humans at the ready in case of trouble, in the future you may be able to sleep while your vehicle gets you from point A to point B. Fully autonomous cars have already been created, but they are not currently available for purchase due to the need for further testing.

    Health care

Currently, doctors are using artificial intelligence in health care to detect tumors at a better success rate than human radiologists, according to a paper published by the Royal College of Physicians in 2019. Robots are also being used to assist doctors in performing surgeries. For example, AI can warn a surgeon that they are about to puncture an artery accidentally, as well as perform minimally invasive surgery and subsequently prevent hand tremors by doctors.

Plus, robots come in handy when organizing clinical trials. AI can pick out possible candidates much more quickly than humans by scanning applications for the right ages, sex, symptoms and more. They can also input and organize data about the candidates, trial results and other information quickly.

【1】What do we know about Deep Blue?

A.It is the first AI chess game computer ever created by human.

B.It defeated a grand chess master because it could think like a human.

C.If you play against Deep Blue, you will be interested in it.

D.Deep Blue is able to guess its opponents’ next moves and take actions against them.

【2】What does the underlined words mean?

    A.come into force

    B.are of help

    C.are readily available

    D.come into being

【3】Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?

A.As long as the test is done, self-driving cars will be available for sale.

B.AI is highly accurate in tumor detection in health care industry.

C.AI can function as good assistants for doctors in multiple aspects.

D.AI can help correct the errors made by doctors when performing surgeries.

  • 22、A new study warns that pollution caused by the world’s food production system is also a major driver of rising temperatures on the planet besides the use of fossil fuels.

The study found that if the world food system stays on its present growth path, it will produce nearly 1.4 trillion metric tons of greenhouse gases over the next 80 years. That pollution is expected to come from fertilizers (肥料) used in agriculture, mismanaged soil, food waste and methane gas released from cows and other animals that are raised. Other causes include operations of turning forests into farmland.

The researchers predict that even if emissions from fossil fuels such as coal and oil were stopped now, emissions from the world food system would make it impossible to achieve a main goal of the 2015 United Nations Paris Agreement on climate change. The goal is to keep rises in the Earth’s temperature during this century well below 2 degrees Celsius.

The UN has said that in order to stay below the 1.5 degrees Celsius level, emissions must fall at least 7.6 percent each year through 2030. The new study calls for immediate “improvements in farming practices, as well as changes in what we eat and how much food we waste”, to help reach the Paris Agreement goals.

Jason Hill, a professor of biosystems engineering, said in a statement that most of the efforts aimed at reducing climate change center on reducing the use of fossil fuels, and that the research clearly shows that the food system has a much greater effect on climate change than is widely known. Hill also noted that fixing the problem would not require the world’s population to completely stop eating meat but eat better, healthier foods. People can improve how they grow foods. And they can waste less food.

The researchers say such efforts are achievable and can also lead to many other improvements beyond controlling climate change. These include making humans healthier, reducing water pollution, improving air quality, preventing animals’ dying out and making people make more money from their farm.

【1】Which part of food production causes the pollution?

    A.Destruction of forests.

    B.Overuse of food waste.

    C.Growth of food production

    D.Mismanagement of raising animals

【2】What might the present world food system lead to?

    A.Emissions may fall 7.6% yearly.

B.Climate change targets will be revised.

C.Global temperatures will rise by over 2℃.

D.Fuels such as coal and oil may not be used.

【3】What do Jason Hill’s words suggest about the food system?

A.It is a bit difficult to improve.

B.Its bad effects aren’t fully noticed.

C.Its importance is not widely known.

D.It causes more pollution than fossil fuels.

【4】How will improvements in the food system bring benefits?

A.People will live a longer life

    B.Farm profitability will be improved.

    C.Water pollution will be stopped.

    D.Global temperatures will fall greatly.

  • 23、Zheng Kelu, the Chinese translator of French masterpieces by Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Stendhal and Simone Beauvoir, died aged 81 on Sept 20. In his six-decade career, Zheng translated around 60 French literature and social science works, and published 11 monographs and 10 textbooks. Thanks to his endeavors, Chinese readers were able to appreciate many classic French works of literature including Les Miserables, La Traviata and Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.

Zheng Kelu was fond of Russian and French literature since high school and later studied French at Peking University from 1957. During the “cultural revolution” (1966-76), he spent more than a year reciting the French-Chinese dictionary, because it was the only learning material available. He was then able to read original French works.

In his translation, he dared to use rarely used Chinese characters in a hope to make his readers turn to the dictionary and therefore expand their knowledge and vocabulary.

In Zheng’s view, translating practice helped to improve his French language capability, while doing research inspired him on selecting literature works to be translated. Benefiting from his research, he attached great importance to the preface (前言) of his translation so as to help the readers learn about highlights and historical value of the works, and the authors’ writing techniques and motives. He said in an interview with Shanghai Observer in November that the key to a quality translation lies in how to deal with sentence patterns, especially relative clauses that don’t exist in the Chinese language. He emphasized polishing language use and concluded his translating style as brief and fluent while being literarily graceful.

【1】What does the underlined word “endeavors” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.translations.

    B.efforts.

    C.masterpieces.

    D.recommendations.

【2】What made Zheng Kelu be able to read original French works?

    A.The “cultural revolution”.

    B.His fond of French literature.

    C.The French-Cinese dictionaries.

    D.His past learning experience.

【3】Which words can best describe Zheng Kelu?

    A.Careful and friendly.

    B.Proud but brave.

    C.Determined and ambitious.

    D.Strict but generous.

【4】What can be inferred from Zheng’s view?

A.Rarely used Chinese characters must be used.

B.It is helpful to present historical value of the works.

C.It is important for the translation to be complicated.

D.Relative clauses have no effect on a quality translation.
