21、When we look at a lovely baby, a puppy or a really cute kitten many of us want to squeeze it. Why is that?
According to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, it’s a typical experience of “cute aggression”. The experience results from the fight between the brain’s “emotion system”, which impels (驱使) people to squeeze cute things, and its “reward system” which deals with feelings of “wanting”.
In the study, 54 participants between the ages of 18 and 40 were presented with four groups of photos. Two of the groups of photos were of cute human babies and animals and the other two were of less adorable adult humans and animals. As the participants looked at the photos, there searchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, the participants reward systems were found to be active as they looked at the cute babies, and they seemed to be overwhelmed(征服的). By contrast, the reward systems of the people looking at the less cute adults were found to be inactive, and they seemed to be less impelled by their reward systems.
This suggests that cute things activate their emotion systems in such a way that people are overwhelmed by the experience of cuteness. But reward systems work against these emotions by creating the desire to protect cute things.
As Katherine Stavropoulos, the lead researcher of this study at the University of California in the US told Science Alert, “The cute aggression is the brain’s way of ‘bringing us back down’ by balancing our feelings of being overwhelmed.”
Stavropoulos compared this process of balancing to an evolutionary adaptation. Such an adaptation may have taken place to ensure that people are able to continue taking care of creatures they consider particularly cute.
So, although cute babies and adorable animals may look completely helpless, their vulnerable( 易受伤害的) appearance may in fact help them to survive.

22、 Among the more colorful characters of Leadville’s golden age was H.A.W. Tabor. His history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. A few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch. “Great deposits of lead(铅) are sure to be found here.” he said.
Tabor opened a store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco. It was his custom to “grubstake” miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies while they looked for ore (矿石), in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered.
One day in 1878, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were continued, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won’t make any difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They picked wasteland on the mountain side and began to dig. After nine days they struck silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1,300,000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment.
Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine for $117,000. This turned out to be even more incredible than the Pittsburgh, yielding $35,000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later became vice-governor of the state.

A.to seek fortune B.to sell supplies
C.to open a mine company D.to look for ore

B.Helping the miners to look for ore.
C.Supplying everything to miners for free.
D.Exchanging items for minerals interests with miners.
【3】Why didn’t Tabor give up the “grub” with the two miners?
A.Because he was specialized in business.
B.Because they insisted on making a deal with him.
C.Because the other customers prevented him then.
D.Because he had earned too much money before.
【4】What is the intention of the passage?
A.To introduce Tabor’s successful experience.
B.To encourage people to start a business.
C.To discuss Tabor’s life planning.
D.To tell of the gold rush.

24、You don’t need to travel long distances to find pleasure in nature
The Greek historian Herodotus is said to have made one of the earliest lists of seven wonders of the world. These were man-made structures, including the still mysterious feat of ancient horticulture known as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. More recent times saw natural alternatives to these marvels of classical architecture proposed: waterfalls, mountains, canyons, reefs. 【1】
As environmental consciousness has risen in the west, attitudes to such sightseeing have changed. Yes, it is thrilling to visit remote forests or spot rare species. But travelling to far-flung destinations is carbon-intensive when flights or long road journeys are involved, and conservation can be made more difficult as well as assisted by sightseers. There is a balance to be struck, and ethical governments and businesses around the world try to maximize the benefits while minimizing the harms. 【2】
Most of us, in the rich countries where people take most holidays, understand better than ever that there are costs as well as benefits associated with exploring. One of the six pledges proposed by an environmental campaign launched last month, The Jump, is to “holiday local”, taking short-haul flights once every three years and long-haul flights very rarely. Fortunately, the UK’s 15 national parks, 86 areas of outstanding natural beauty (known in Scotland as national scenic areas), and countless other landscapes that are without formal status, but beloved nonetheless, mean that there is no shortage of special places for domestic nature tourists to visit—while a host of European beauty spots are accessible by rail.
One recent survey found that Windsor Great Park and Kew have become Britain’s most popular attractions, while Covid has created difficulties for indoor spaces which do not apply to outdoor ones. 【3】 Some companies that formerly ran foreign trips have adapted to the pandemic by taking people to watch dolphins and other marine life off British coasts instead.
【4】 Sewage outflows are out of control due to failed water industry regulation. The owners of a popular rewilded estate in West Sussex—Knepp—have warned that plans to build 3,500 homes next to their land would be catastrophic for the species that live there. But as we confront an environmental emergency that grows ever more dangerous, it is essential to cultivate appreciation for the nature that surrounds us. In a small way, holiday outings to watch dragonflies, kingfishers or seals, or be surrounded by trees that are coming into leaf, could help us to focus on what matters.
A.Colombia, for example, recently introduced laws aimed at promoting sustainable tourism.
B.Visitor numbers at wildlife trusts are high, with waiting lists for beaver-spotting.
C.Travelling, especially air travel, is a luxury that is bad for the environment.
D.Dramatic landscapes, features and wildlife, and the pleasure and excitement they offer to visitors, are staples of tourism.
E.Today, the tourism sector has become one of the great economic engines in many countries, forming part of the international political agenda.
F.This is not to minimize the destruction of nature that is also taking place.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On the last day before Christmas, I hurried to the stores to buy the remaining gifts I didn’t manage to buy earlier.
Seeing all the people crawling along in the queue there, I started to complain about this annoying Christmas. Nonetheless, I made my way to the toys section. Once I was there, I started to curse at the prices as I wonder if all kids really play with such expensive toys.
While looking in the toys section, I noticed a small boy of about five years old, pressing a doll against his chest. He kept on touching the hair of the doll lovingly and looking at the pricetag. His eyes looked so sad.
Before I knew it, I found myself bending over and asked who he wanted to give the doll to. “It is the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.” Still holding the doll in his hands, the boy continued, “but I don’t have enough money.”
I told him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all and not to worry. However, he replied sadly, “My sister and I are living with Granny. She is a cleaner in a big building and she is working very hard. She tries her best to give food to us.”
My heart nearly stopped. “I told Granny and my little sister that Santa Claus will send gifts to them,” the little boy looked up at me and said, “I prayed to God to help me and I started to save every coin in my pocket half a year ago, so that I could have enough money to buy them each a small gift for Christmas. But now I don’t even have enough for the doll.” He looked at the doll again quietly with sad eyes.
Tears welling up in my eyes, I quickly reached for my wallet and took a few dollars out.
