21、 Years of exposure to Americans has, at last, convinced me of something about their food culture. I now think they’re correct in one of life’s great dilemmas: when eating at a restaurant, it is really fine to politely send your food back if it is not what you ordered, or covered in cheese when you asked for no cheese, etc.
Of course, the idea makes me feel anxious; the British fear of making a scene is planted in my soul. But what persuaded me, in the end, was realizing how self-centered that fear actually is. Are you really such a big deal that your no-cheese request will embarrass your fellow diners, ruin the waiter's day, and send waves of shock through the kitchen? Face it: you're not. Instead, you're in the situation of what might be termed “egocentric reticence (以自我为中心的沉默).”
Egocentric reticence raised its head again the other day in a study about gratitude, which found that people underestimate how much delight a thank-you note can bring. The psychologists Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley had people send grateful messages to someone who'd made a difference to their lives. Again and again, they found, senders assumed their words would lead to less happiness and more awkwardness than they really did, and that recipients would judge their letter-writing competence cruelly, too. Even in the seemingly selfless context of expressing gratitude, senders couldn’t help giving too much weight to their own perspective. So if you stop yourself from sending someone a thank-you note because you're worried you'll make them feel awkward or annoyed, you are letting egocentrism prevent an action that would have made both of you happier.
The most acute form of egocentric reticence, surely, is extreme shyness. “Shyness is just egotism out of its depth,” famous actress Penelope Keith once told an interviewer. The quote was later regarded as a line the writer Sadie Stein credits with curing her own shyness. “For some reason, the clear cruelty of that quote was what I needed, ” Stein wrote. “OK, I thought... No one is looking at you.”

22、Have you ever dreamed of having a fashionable watch of great value?
A small watchmaker in Switzerland in 1922 designed the first automatic watch to show day, month, and date. Only seven of these splendid watches were ever made and these watches were almost lost to history. Today, it is so hard to get an original watch that some watch historians are even willing to offer $ 200,000 for one.
These watches attracted a lot of people for their splendid color, fashionable style, and uses in the 1920s.The owners of the watches were admired and set apart from the crowd. Because the number of the original watches is very limited, owning such a watch will make you feel very special.
Today, you are offered the same kind of watch with improvement. It has a 24-jet mechanical movement, the kind desired by watch collectors. The watchmaker has made movement of the watch much more modern with an automatic rotor (上弦装置) so that the watch never needs to be wound by hand. The watch comes in a very beautiful case with a crocodile design on it. To get a watch in such a perfect design means to get a chance to know a piece watch-making history and to wear such a watch will show your personal taste and social position.
You can get the watch either in person or by mail at an affordable price. You will also receive good service from the watch seller. If you are not satisfied with the watch after you get it, you simply return it within 30 days. Don’t miss the chance to realize your dream.

23、Researchers in China have found a new, genetically (基因上) pure species of the critically endangered Chinese giant salamander (中国大鲵) in the wild. The new species was found in a largely undisturbed part of the Jiulingshan National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province. The animals are the only known genetically pure, reproducing giant salamander population in its natural habitat in the country. “The discovery of the new species in a closed nature reserve provides hope that other genetically pure species may still exist in other such places,” said Robert Murphy, a professor at the University of Toronto and one of the co-authors of the study.
The Chinese giant salamander is believed to have remained almost unchanged for 170 million years. While Chinese giant salamanders used to be thought of as one species, recent studies have revealed that there are five to eight genetically distinct species in the country. However, the species arc under great threat of extinction due to habitat loss, water pollution and overexploitation (过度开发) of wild populations over the past decades.
Chinese giant salamanders have been protected in China since the 1980s. “After the discovery of multiple species of Chinese giant salamanders, China quickly put into place several actions, such as providing additional funding for critical research, establishing a series of nature reserves for the species, and promoting cooperation between scientists and biologists,” Murphy said.
The researchers are now trying to track down more giant salamanders. Murpby said the discovery opened up new possibilities, such as establishing breeding farms with genetically pure salamanders to help populate ecosystems. In their paper, the researchers also stressed the importance of undisturbed habitats for protecting wildlife. “Closed nature reserves a new pathway for discovering and conserving endangered species,” they said.
【1】Why is the new discovery by Chinese researchers important?
A.It confirms the need for more independent studies on biodiversity.
B.It proves the genetic transformation of Chinese giant salamanders.
C.It suggests the importance of increasing funding for nature reserves.
D.It indicates the presence of other genetically pure species elsewhere.
【2】What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A.Some species of Chinese giant salamanders have become extinct.
B.Chinese giant salamander numbers have declined in recent decades.
C.Chinese giant salamanders have remained unchanged for 170 million years.
D.Some breeding programs have been launched to protect Chinese giant salamanders.
【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.China’s lessons from the past.
B.China’s cooperation with other countries.
C.China’s efforts to protect giant salamanders.
D.China’s ambition to develop new nature reserves.
【4】What would the researchers most probably agree with according to the last paragraph?
A.More closed nature reserves should be established.
B.Traditional conservation methods are more efficient.
C.Mixed breeding can be used to protect endangered species.
D.Large breeding farms are beneficial to the growth of giant salamanders.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When Jack was a kid, he and his family left Britain and moved to a foreign country. Although his family was poor, he became a very excellent engineer after college. He knew a lot about the train. For example, he knew that when a fast-moving train’s speed has a sudden change, it’s probably because the track is broken at some distance.
After college, Jack gained a teaching job in a British university. So one summer day he left for Britain by ship. Being poor, he wore worn-out clothes, which were even a little messy. But he didn’t care about it at all. When he landed on the British shore, he took a train to the city where the university was. On the train, he found other passengers were all rich gentlemen, who wore nice suits and shoes. And he could see all of them were not friendly to him.
After the train started, they began making fun of him. They were angry, unsatisfied with the train guard who allowed him to get on the train with them. Some even wanted to pull the alarm to stop the train.
However, all of this didn’t have an effect on Jack. He was sitting there calmly, focusing on the train’s condition, including its speed and sound produced by the wheels running on the track. Each time he took a train, he’d pay attention to the train’s sound, speed, etc. By doing so, he could feel the train and the track and check whether the train had any possible danger.
That day, when the train was already running at a high speed, the gentlemen still continued to show their unfriendly behaviors to Jack. But Jack remained calm and still focused on the train’s running. One hour later, he found there was a sudden change in the train’s speed. After further feeling the train’s condition, he could decide the track was 100% broken at some distance.
