二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The word addiction (上瘾) usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs. 1. Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games.

    2. Many people enjoy going to markets or stores more and more every day, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are so interested in shopping that they usually buy things they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.

The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. 3.

Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can bring out problems. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. 4. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. 5.

A.Once you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, it is difficult to get rid of.

B.Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity.

C.They use this activity as a way to forget their problems.

D.However, in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions.

E.People addicted to computer games consider the games as great ways to amuse themselves.

F.They get deep in debt, and can even go bankrupt (破产) and get sent to prison.

G.It can also cause financial problems.

  • 22、When you were young, ginger ale(姜味汽水)may have been a popular choice for reducing the unpleasant feelings caused by your upset stomach on the road to get to school. For years, ginger has been used to reduce the effects of nausea(作呕). But do you know it’s now also being looked at to fight cancer?

Scientists have discovered that ginger can kill cancerous cells in two different ways. On the one hand, ginger causes the cancer cells to “commit suicide” by destroying themselves while leaving the surrounding healthy cells untouched. Ginger can prevent the growth of diseased cells by destroying the environment they grow in. On the other hand, ginger tricks the diseased cells and causes them to fight among themselves. Researchers are now looking into one of the toughest cancers to fight. However, scientists find repeated treatment of disease by drugs can actually lose its effectiveness over time as the cancer builds up resistance(抵抗力)to the same treatment. This raises researchers’ confidence that ginger would help stop resistance from the cancer.

In a study, the cancer clearly stopped growing in the body of the mice that had been given ginger. The bad news is that such encouraging research has only been conducted on mice. The good news, however, is that it seems humans might be able to get the same benefit just by eating products with ginger and ginger root in them.

Cancer prevention and fighting abilities aren’t the only potential benefits you may get from adding a bit more ginger to your diet.

Drinking ginger ale when your stomach was upset as a child wasn’t just a placebo(安慰剂).Numerous studies and research, including the Mayo Clinic’s strict grading system, agree that ginger has some sort of anti-nausea characteristics.

Some believe that ginger works well against nausea after operations, while others use it to reduce motion sickness such as seasickness and car sickness. The Mayo Clinic, however, advises the use of ginger only to reduce nausea during pregnancy. While more research needs to be done, early studies are very promising, especially in that small amounts of ginger don’t seem to do any harm to the mother or baby.

Other health benefits from ginger exist as well. Since ginger is often considered to be useful in warming bodies, it can improve the condition of people’s joints including knees and ankle joints. Some suggest that ginger can help cure a cough associated with the common cold. Another benefit of ginger is that it seems to have no real side effects, which is one of the main reasons it appears to be safe during pregnancy.

But for safety, you should always consult a doctor for instructions on daily use before starting, even with something like ginger that seems to have little to no side effects.

1Why do scientists think ginger can be used to fight against cancer?

    A. Ginger can destroy diseased cells in two different ways.

    B. Ginger is commonly considered as a kind of pain killer.

    C. Ginger warms people’s bodies and helps them recover from operations.

    D. Ginger has no harmful side effects according to a large amount of medical research.

2We can learn from the third paragraph that___________.

    A. ginger works well only for warm-blooded animals

    B. ginger and its root have the same effect on humans as mice

    C. people are likely to gain great benefit by having ginger

    D. the research on ginger is promised to be carried out only on mice

  • 23、   A new study suggests drinking coffee as soon as someone wakes up from a poor night's sleep greatly affects metabolism (新陈代谢) and blood sugar control.

In the study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink upon waking-first from a normal night's sleep, and then again after a poor night's sleep during which they were woken up for five minutes every hour. In the third, their sleep was similarly disrupted, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.

Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drink, which mirrored the calories of a typical breakfast, in each experiment. Results showed that one night of disrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast in-creased the blood sugar response by around 50 percent.

By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies' ability to break down our food healthily is completely improved. Examining the effects of bro-ken sleep and. morning coffee across a range of different metabolic markers, scientists at the University of Bath found that, while one night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood sugar control.

“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee—the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is. This study is important and has far-reaching health influences, and it indeed moves some coffee drinkers' heartstrings. As up to now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long way to go.” said Professor James Betts, co-director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of Bath.

1How did UK researchers get the result of the experiment?

    A.By assumption. B.By making comparisons.

    C.By questionnaire. D.By consulting journals.

2What can we learn from the experiment?

A.One night of poor sleep surely affects blood sugar.

B.Drinking coffee after breakfast does harm to health.

C.Having strong drinks has a good effect on metabolism.

D.Drinking coffee at different time has different effects on health.

3What does James Betts think of the study?

A.It makes no sense. B.It is limited and blind.

C.It remains to be continued. D.It is particular and explicit.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.How. Much Coffee to Drink Matters

B.Does Coffee Really Wake Up an Appetite?

C.Drinking Coffee before Breakfast Harms Metabolism

D.How Does Drinking Black Coffee Affect People's Sleep?
