二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Technology use seems to be the new wave of addiction hitting people of all ages. Its extreme use can be compared to the use of drugs, which is called Plug-in Heroin.

The next time you’re in a crowded public place, look at the people around you. It’s hard to find someone who isn’t glued to the tiny screen, fingers moving at lightning speeds, texting their friends, e-mailing coworkers or listening to music. It may seem ridiculous that someone is that addicted to such a small object. I’ve seen people who seem to be at their wits’ end if their phone or iPad has been taken away, lost or left at home.

Some people may ask, “What’s wrong with technology use? It’s a way for people to communicate.” While this is true, the overuse of technology isn’t always appropriate in certain settings. Schools are becoming stricter about the use of cell phones, iPods and other electronics in classrooms. Various workplaces have signs hanging on their walls warning employees that “Cell phone use is not permitted” or “Cell phones are forbidden”. On the first warning you will be sent home, and on the second warning you will be fired.

Electronics may be a way for people to communicate and stay in touch with each other, but the disadvantages may outweigh the benefits. People are losing the ability to hold face-to-face conversations with others. However, it’s hard to avoid electronics in this day and age because almost everything is turning into an electronic format. Books, originally meant for paper design, are now being transferred to electronic forms. Photo albums, and even yearbooks, can now be viewed via the Internet. With this growing trend, future generations are bound to become even more addicted to technology.

Is there a cure for electronic addiction? Simply turning electronics off for an hour or two a day may help to an extent, but it will not completely rid electronic addiction. There only seems to be one cure left, and it may be the hardest: self control.

    【1】What is Plug-in Heroin?

    A.The growing popularity of electronics.

B.The serious consequences of technology use.

C.The future possibility of technology development.

    D.The unreasonable dependence on electronics.

【2】The second paragraph is intended to __________.

    A.show people’s addiction to electronics.

    B.persuade people to quit electronics.

C.prove electronics are harmful to people.

D.tell people it is ridiculous to use electronics.

【3】Why is it difficult to avoid electronics nowadays?

A.People have no interest in traditional paper designs.

B.More information tends to be available in electronic forms.

C.It is the only way people stay in touch with each other.

D.People have fewer chances to communicate in person.

【4】The writer’s attitude to the overuse of technology can be best described as __________.

    A.approving.

    B.indifferent.

    C.critical.

    D.doubtful.

  • 22、One of the most inspiring quotes I ever heard was by Brian Tracy. He said: “The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people fail many more times than unsuccessful people.” I personally experienced the wisdom of that understanding right after my first book was published. Like many authors,I expected hundreds of bookstore customers lining up for me to sign copies for them. I’m afraid to say, it didn’t quite happen like that.

My first signing was arranged at the largest bookstore in the city. Filled with anticipation,I was put into a private signing room in the beautiful store. Despite a nice sign placed outside the room exhibiting images of both me and my book, not a single customer entered the room. As each minute passed, I became increasingly anxious.

Do they not like the title? I wondered. Do they not like the book cover?

After 90 minutes of this torture, I was absolutely distraught.

For the four years writing the book, I had felt a sense of mission and purpose like never before in my life. Working a full 8-hour day in my clinic, I had to get into bed by 9:30 pm every day, so I could wake up at 5:30 in the morning and have two hours of writing before heading into my clinic. Before I ever began each writing session, I would close my eyes for 10 minutes and then whisper, “Please grant me the words to touch just one person’s life”

Now, sitting there alone at my first book signing,I wondered if my entire life wasn’t just a big joke. At that moment, just when I couldn’t feel any worse, a middle-aged couple walked into the room. I managed to hide my emotions and introduced myself and my book. There was something different about the way they were looking at me that I couldn’t quite identify. But I didn’t know what else to say. The couple turned to each other, and the husband nodded to his wife. She then told me, “I think we’ll get the book.” My heart began to pound. But I realized the woman was trying to say something else.

“The reason we’re buying it,” she said hesitantly, “is because our son committed suicide two years ago. Maybe your story will help us get over it.”

At that moment, I knew if I never sold another copy of the book, my four years of writing it had served its purpose. Although I would have many more challenging years until my book caught on and sold well, this couple’s story was all the motivation I needed at that point to keep me moving ahead. Thanks to them, I would come to the realization that the greatest of lives are made all in the same way: One challenge... one hurdle... one step... and one small victory at a time.

【1】The writer quotes Brian Tracy to emphasize the importance of _________.

    A.conscience

    B.success

    C.confidence

    D.perseverance

【2】The word “distraught” (paragraph 4) probably means ________.

    A.bored and impatient

    B.cheerful and proud

    C.upset and disappointed

    D.miserable and ashamed

【3】What can be inferred from paragraph 5?

A.The writer had to quit his job to make time for his writing.

B.The writer was not sure about the purpose of his writing at first.

C.The writing was completed with great self-discipline and efforts.

D.The process of writing the book was full of pains and frustration.

【4】By saying “my four years of writing it had served its purpose”, the author probably means that _________.

A.he had succeeded in selling his first book to the couple

B.he had managed to touch someone’s life with his book

C.he was quite satisfied with the feedback of his readers

D.he had found someone who appreciated his writing

  • 23、The proposal for a new Indonesian capital city has been on the cards ever since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945. The political and economic crises which followed have long delayed the plan, but current president, Joko Widodo, now appears determined to make the move a reality. The government officially confirmed that the capital will be moved from Jakarta to a new location within Kalimantan, part of the island of Borneo in Indonesia.

A number of factors are likely to have influenced the decision to forge ahead with the move, but it seems likely that Jakarta’s environmental problems are chief among them. Built on swampy(沼泽的)ground, Jakarta is sinking, in some parts at a rate of 20cm a year. Experts predict that most of northern Jakarta could sink beneath the sea by 2050. What’s more, Jakarta is rarely mentioned without reference to its extreme levels of traffic jams and air pollution. There could be other reasons too. John McCarthy, an expert on land use in Kalimantan at the Australian National University Crawford School points to a potential desire to spread wealth throughout Indonesia. “Jakarta is the most highly developed core of Indonesia which sucks all the money and opportunities from other areas,” he says. “I think there’s logic in splitting the economic and political capital.”

But the location of this new political center is proving controversial. Some environmental groups are concerned that the chosen location in East Kalimantan will increase logging and destruction of nearby forests, home to orangutans and other endangered species. Indonesia’s planning minister previously told reporters that the new capital will be a sustainable “forest city” that won’t result in the destruction of protected forests, but how exactly this would work has not yet been explained.

Despite these challenges, the government is now putting its plan in motion. But even if this new capital is built, Jakarta will still need protection. Home to ten million people, the city simply can’t be neglected.

【1】What is the Indonesian government’s new plan?

    A.Building a forest city.

    B.Developing resources of Borneo.

    C.Electing a new president.

    D.Relocating the capital city.

【2】What may be the main reason for the government’s decision?

    A.To reduce land pollution.

    B.To seek better living environment.

C.To make full use of swampy ground.

D.To balance the economic growth between cities.

【3】What worries some people about the government’s choice?

A.It may cost a lot of money.

B.It may destroy the local ecosystem.

C.It may disrupt many residents’ normal life.

D.It may cause the decline of the old capital city.

【4】What does the underlined word “neglected” probably mean?

    A.Ignored.

    B.Ranked.

    C.Repaired.

    D.Damaged.

  • 24、   While you might not expect a bright yellow smily face to appear in a quotation from Macbeth, teachers are now using emojis to teach their students Shakespeare.

Charlotte Hodgson, an English teacher, showed that emojis are added to her department’s schemes of work. She said, ‘‘Everyone in the English department is using them. I've had classes plot the entire summary of a scene in emojis and then they put them onto a graph to show the tension the characters are feeling, and they find quotations to prove this, so it builds to become higher-level learning as well.” Miss Hodgson said emojis had particularly helped her students engage with Shakespeare.

She said, “I’ve just taught A Midsummer Night's Dream and when we’ve read a bit of the scene, they summarize it in two main emojis and then have to explain it. The emojis are not used by themselves — there is always some kind of verbal or written explanation that then allows you to check the students’ literacy, writing skills or speech skills.”, She claims that emoji use leads to higher understanding and learning.

Others use them to help students who have English as a second language. At a secondary school, modem foreign languages teacher Luca Kuhlman argues that emojis are an valuable aid. “Wherever possible, I take out the English words in a text and replace them with an emoji, so they connect the French with an image rather than with an English translation,” he said.

But Jon Brunskill, a teacher of West London, said, “If a teacher said, ‘I know how to use standard spoken English, of course I do— I’ve got a degree, it's how I got this lovely job and can pay my mortgage on a lovely house, but I'm not going to give it to you guys because I think it will be fun to use emojis for a few years,’ I think that’s a moral failing.”

And Clare Sealy added, “As educators, we have not a single minute to waste teaching small things such as emojis.”

【1】How did Charlotte use emojis in teaching Shakespeare?

A.By expressing the feelings of characters.

B.By matching a quotation with an emoji.

C.By summarizing a scene with emojis.

D.By employing emojis to describe characters.

【2】What can we learn from Charlotte using emojis in her class?

A.Raise her students’ level of writing skills.

    B.Replace verbal or written explanations.

C.Improve the students’ memory of words.

D.Give her students a starting point.

【3】What did Luca suggest in Para. 4?

A.Emojis are a helpful aid in teaching.

B.English words can be easily replaced by an emoji.

C.Students like images for the French words.

D.Emojis are equal to an English translation.

【4】What is Jon and Clare’s attitude towards emojis?

    A.Concerned.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Uninterested.
