21、Many people believe that they will be happy once they arrive at some specific goal they set for themselves. However, more often than not, once you arrive “there” you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your “there” vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing (追寻) after another “there”, you are never really appreciating what you already have right “here”. It is important for human beings to keep sober-minded(头脑清醒的) about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is developed by your dreams and aspirations (抱负). On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of your life right now.
To be grateful means you are thankful for what you have right now. Gratitude (感激) fills your heart with the joyful feeling and allows you to fully appreciate everything that arises on your path. As you try hard to keep your focus on the present moment, you can experience the full wonder of “here”.
There are many ways to develop gratitude. Here are just a few suggestions you may wish to try:
◆ Imagine what your life would be like if you lost all that you had. This will most surely remind you of how much you do appreciate it.
◆ Make a list each day of all that you are grateful for, so that you can stay conscious (有意识的) daily of your blessings. Do this especially when you are feeling as though you have nothing to feel grateful for. Or spend a few minutes before you go to sleep giving thanks for all that you have.
◆ Spend time offering assistance (帮助) to those who are less fortunate than you, so that you may gain a new perspective (观点).
What really matters is that you create a space in your consciousness for appreciation for all that you have right now, so that you may live more happily in your present moment.

A. check out what we lose everyday
B. give thanks for all that we have before sleeping
C. help others who are less fortunate than us

22、Today we travel to film festivals around the world to learn about their different histories and goals. Some of the festivals are major competitions, while others are smaller events to help draw attention to more experimental movies.
One of the most famous film festivals in the world takes place in the French town of Cannes during twelve days in May. The Cannes Film Festival started in 1946 as a social gathering for showing movies. Later, the popular event developed into an important competition.
Visitors to the festival also see a series of short films, as well as films which don’t compete for awards. But the Cannes Film Festival is more than about honoring special movies and seeing famous actors. Each year, more than 1,000 people from almost 100 countries gather to watch about 900 movies. This helps link people from all areas of the movie industry. Also, it helps filmmakers sell their movies to distributors(发行人) so they can be shown in theaters around the world.
The Venice International Film Festival starts in late August. Dating back to 1932, it is one of the oldest movie festivals in the world.
Many film festivals have very specialized subjects. In Belgium you can go to the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. For 26 years this festival has been showing science fiction and horror movies from around the world. If this event seems too frightening, you can attend the International Children’s Film Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. In Turkey, the International Istanbul Film Festival, which was first organized in 1982, shows movies about art, music, dance or literature.
On any given day, a film festival is probably taking place somewhere around the world. Here we’ve only discussed a small number of them. These important and exciting events help to celebrate the art and industry of movies.

23、 Naturalist John Muir called the Marin County woods named for him “the best tree-lover's monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world.”
Located only 11 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge near San Francisco, California, USA. Muir Woods puts some of nature's most huge creations within reach of little feet, hands, and imaginations.
“Muir Woods is home to a small forest of redwood trees that reach to the sky,” says David Shaw of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. “Redwoods grow taller than any other tree species in the world. The average age of the redwoods here ranges from 400 to 800 years old and many ancient specimens have been around for more than a thousand years.”
William Kent, the man who donated the 295 acres to create the Muir monument, grew up in Marin and played in similar redwood forests. That childhood experience inspired him to save the redwoods as an adult.
“Young people can learn about young William Kent when they visit here,” says ranger(护林员) Timothy Jordan. “Kent’s early connection with nature developed his love of the outdoors. As an adult, he witnessed the destruction of many Bay Area redwood forests. This, with the writings of John Muir, inspired Kent's conservationism.”
Walking (and playing)in, on, and around the redwoods will help kids understand why young Kent was so fascinated(深深吸引) by the trees. Ranger Jordan encourages children to lie down and look up at the treetops, hug a redwood tree, and start a nature journal like John Muir.
“Have kids find a redwood spray(小树枝)the same age as them, count the rings in trees, and sit inside of a hollow redwood tree on Fern Creek.” he advises.
After all the interaction, the kids just may be ready to rest. Take this time to “be quiet and listen to the sounds of the forest,” says Shaw. "Encourage kids to think about how these trees have stood quietly through year after year of rain, sun, and sometimes even snow.”

24、Part of the importance of the practice of capacity building is that too many of us think our intellectual capabilities and focus are fixed. However, Benjamin Hardy, a psychologist and author, recently presented groundbreaking research that suggests that we can often change by changing our environment.
“Because people's lives become routine, you begin to see very predictable behaviors and attitudes,” Hardy says. This is why personality is viewed as stable and predictable over time. Hardy's book, Personality isn't Permanent, digs into this concept.
We regard our childhood, teenage years and 20s as our foundational learning periods. It can be common to think we can't learn as effectively as we grow older. But Hardy argues that we really stop learning because we stop trying new things.
In our young lives, we experience a number of “firsts”, ranging from social experiences to leaning opportunities. Absorbing new experiences is crucial to ensuring we keep expanding our minds and changing our personalities.
Learning new things is a great starting point to changing your personality for the better. Also consider making substantial changes to your professional environment. This can manifest in several ways. If you're a successful leader maybe you'd like to share your knowledge with others by coaching, writing or speaking. Anything that pushes you outside the limits of your normal work life can ensure you keep growing and changing.
In Personality Isn't Permanent, Hardy discusses a study from Harvard psychologist Dr. Ellen Langer. In 1981, Langer and her graduate students selected a group of men in their 70s and placed them in an environment modeled to look like the 1950s. It featured a black-and-white television, mid-century furniture and magazines from the era. As Hardy explains, “The goal was to trigger their minds and bodies to exhibit the energy and biological responses of a much younger person.” It actually worked.
【1】Why do people think personality is fixed?
A.Because life becomes regular and foreseeable.
B.Because people refuse to read new books
C.Because the brain becomes less effective.
D.Because people's intelligence turns stable.
【2】What can we do to enrich our mind?
A.Reread a fantastic book.
B.Devote fully to daily work.
C.Learn a new kind of sport.
D.Talk with an old friend.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数为150左右。
When Bryan Anderson noticed an old lady, caught on the side of the road, he knew she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out with his motor still running.
Even with a big smile on his face, she was worried. He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. After reading her mind, he introduced himself as Bryan Anderson and began to help her.
Learning that she had a flat tire, without a second thought, Bryan set out to work and took hours to get it right, dirty and tired. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
With everything done, the lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened. Bryan never thought about being paid. This was helping someone in need. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
Byan told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person help the way he gave her, and he added, “And think of me to let the chain of love pass on.”
Hearing that she owed him nothing, with tears rolling down her cheeks, the old lady drove off with a deep “Thank you”.
A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. In the dirty- looking restaurant, the whole scene was unfamiliar to her; a waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. Then she remembered Bryan.
Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a $100 bill.
