21、The defeat of Lee Sedol, the world’s strongest Go (围棋) player, by a Google artificial intelligence (AI) program, looks like another milestone towards a world where computers can do almost anything a human can. It is not. There are uncountable things that only a human can do, and that no computer seems close to. The problem is that the purely human things are not economically useful to anyone. The things that computers can be taught to do are by contrast economically fantastic. But even the most powerful programs are not human, just as a shovel (铲车). They have no feelings. What they have is power, but this power is growing at a rate that should frighten us all.
It might be less frightening if computers were truly intelligent, but even the most powerful networks are less human than monstrous Martians (火星人). Their power will be used to make money for the firms that finance their development, and then for others quick and clever enough to take advantage of the new world. It is far more likely that they will increase inequality and still further remove the middle classes as we move towards an hourglass (以金钱来衡量的) society in which everyone is either very rich or very poor and likely indebted.
One of the ill effects of the spread of more intelligent computer networks is, at the same time, the spread of what might be called artificial stupidity. If AI is employed largely to replace unskilled labour, it is most productive when labour is kept unskilled or redefined that way. So much of the work in service industries is now simplified until it might be automated (自动化). And robots will never need pensions(养老金). AI is slowly reducing skilled work, like some forms of medical diagnosis (诊断), at the same time, as older doctors complain that the traditional human skills of diagnosis are falling out of medical training. The belief that everything worthwhile can be measured and then managed is far more damaging to humanity than the threat of artificial intelligence on its own.
But no victory in complicated Go games can bring us closer to truly human-like computers.
【1】By mentioning the defeat of Lee Sedol, the author intends to tell us that ______.

23、
Zhang Yuxuan can turn many things into melody (旋律) in her music world—a box of candies, water, pens and glass bottles. She records the sounds around her and mixes them into songs.
Better known as Vicky Xuanxuan on social media, the 15-year-old girl has attracted nearly 1.7 million followers on China’s leading video-sharing and livestreaming platform Bilibili and made national headlines. The sudden popularity has brought her opportunities to cooperate with celebrities, such as pianist Li Yundi.
Yuxuan’s most hit clip (视频剪辑)—the release of her English song She—has been viewed more than 14 million times and received over 1 million thumbs-up emoji on Bilibili. “In the clip, I tried to let viewers know how the song was created,” say Yuxuan, who lives in Shenzhen, South China’s Guangdong province.
The six-minute video tells how a melody coming to the ponytailed (梳马尾辫的) schoolgirl’s mind during a math class is developed into a beautiful song in half an hour. She records playing the guitar on Apple’s music-making app GarageBand, and then mixes vocals and backing tracks.
Inspired by the Hollywood film The Devil Wears Prada, she writes the lyrics for She: “She got a beautiful eye/Walk in a line/Smile with her type/She knows all about life/Never ask why/Driving everyone crazy/She has long hair/Tight skirt/She doesn’t need a lover or a partner.”
Talking about her inspiration for She, Yuxuan says: “I really appreciate the protagonist’s (主角) confidence and independence in the movie. Women like that are so charming.”
The song has amazed people. A Bilibili user says it is a song that “you cannot stop playing time and time again”. The video has forced many to reflect on their own productivity, as another user posts: “A student in junior middle school can create a song in half an hour, but I, a college student, can only finish my meal in half an hour.”

24、 Mom was right! If you say "thank you" for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you'll feel as happy as Larry.
Gratitude, says Robert A. Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, is an important element of happiness. In his recent book, Thanks!Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom's point. In acknowledging and developing this much-ignored expression of thankfulness, he explains how people have benefited-even improved their health.
Expressing gratitude shouldn't be a reaction; it should be a state of mind. To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than you need is easy. To feel grateful in time of crisis-anger, hatred and bitterness-is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life's blessings only after these are lost.
It's crisis and chaos-danger, disease, disability and death-that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are on others. Yet it's the way each of us begins life and ends it. It's too bad that so many people waste those decades in between labouring under the illusion that they are self-sufficient, says Emmons.
The abundance of voices expressing gratitude from his studies of individuals with chronic health problems is many. But Emmons goes beyond his groundbreaking" science to make his case for gratitude by including the inspirational writings of philosophers, novelists and saints, as well as the beliefs of various religions and their respective scriptures. Taken together, these observations are summed up quite nicely by famous humanist Albert Schweitzer, who said the secret of life is "giving thanks for everything".
To enable and embrace gratitude, Emmons encourages the readers of Thanks! to keep a gratitude diary. He even provides easy-to-follow directions on how to practice and develop gratitude.
I'm not a reader or advocate of self-help books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients. The chance discovery led me to this book.
Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So I'll pay attention to her Professional advice and say: Thank you, Professor Emmons.
【1】What is the text mainly discussed?
A.There are many ways of being thankful. B.Mom is great for her being thankful.

A.Professor Emmons supports mom's study on psychology.
B.mom is as great a psychologist as Professor Emmons.
C.Professor Emmons is a famous psychologist.
D.mom is right about her viewpoint on gratitude.
【3】What is the opinion of Professor Emmons?
A.It is enough to thank others orally.
B.Whether you are thankful is always up to you.
C.Remember to be thankful anytime and anywhere.
D.It is easier to be thankful for yourself than for others.
【4】In the writer's opinion, Emmons' book Thanks! on gratitude is_________.
A.helpful B.unreasonable
C.puzzling D.one-sided
