二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   America’s businesses are getting older and fatter, while many new businesses are dying in infancy.

A study last month by the Brookings Institution found that the proportion of older firms has grown steadily over several decades, while the survival rate of new companies has fallen. In addition, young people are starting companies at a sharply lower rate than in the past.

A new report from the National Association of Manufacturers shows a major cause: The cost of obeying government regulations has risen to more than $2 trillion (12.26 trillion yuan) annually, or 12 percent of the GDP, and this cost falls disproportionately on smaller, newer businesses.

It’s risky, difficult and expensive to start a business, and getting more so. Governments are imposing various new rules on a seemingly daily basis: health insurance, minimum wage increases and, most recently in California, compulsory paid sick days for even hourly employees. These regulations shift huge social welfare costs directly onto often-struggling small businesses, while being proportionally much less costly for larger companies.

This is partly an unintended issue of resources---established companies can cope with new costs more easily---but it’s also deliberate. For instance, big insurance companies got a seat at the table to help write Obama care, but less politically powerful firms---like medical device manufacturers---got squeezed.

Mature, successful corporations can employ ex-lawmakers with connections, distribute campaign contributions and even write regulations for themselves. They are also more likely to want to protect steady revenue streams than revolutionize their industry.

Major companies that have been so ill-managed they would otherwise collapse---airlines, car companies and banks---stagger(蹒跚)on because politicians ride to the rescue with bags of taxpayer money.

The genius of our unique system of government is the determination to protect and defend the rights of the individual over the rights of the nation. As such, the rise of a well-connected oligarchy(寡头政治)that protects big business at the expense of small business, and the established over the new, is opposite to American ideals.

Income inequality—which is directly caused by faulty government policy---is being promoted as the reason to impose more of that bad policy. But let’s be perfectly clear, we do not have a free market but one where government picks winners and losers through regulations and financial aids.

Politics is, and always has been, about balancing competing interests seeking to benefit themselves, and that’s as it should be, but the force of government should never be used to reduce competition, kill innovation or support and extend artificial monopolies(垄断)by harming the consumer, the taxpayer and the economy. Policy must breed our new and small businesses or see the as-yet undreamed of innovations that could be our bright future die in infancy.

1We can learn from the passage that___________.

A.over several decades, new companies have grown steadily.

B.mature, successful corporations prefer to maintain their stable incomes.

C.less politically powerful firms also have their voice in making regulations.

D.The cost of obeying government regulations falls equally on all businesses.

2We can infer from the last three paragraphs that__________.

A.the state economy may depend on those innovative businesses.

B.the rise of a well-connected oligarchy is contrary to American ideals.

C.income inequality is what the government should take action to resolve.

D.the government picks winners and losers through the law of free market.

3It can be concluded from the passage that___________.

A.big insurance companies have better relationship with Obama.

B.most of the ex-lawmakers work in mature, successful corporations.

C.larger and older firms have a command of resources of various aspects.

D.politicians like providing financial aids to the companies of worse operation.

4As to the development of smaller businesses, the writer is___________.

    A.contented. B.confident.

    C.convinced. D.concerned.

  • 22、Most parents can remember the artful mix of excitement and anxiety accompanying the choice of their baby’s name—it will follow the child his or her entire life. But the effect could be even more significant. In a paper recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, our research team shows that the stereotype that a given society has of a first name can influence the way people look.

In the study, 185 participants are shown ID-style photos of people they have never met and are asked to guess the stranger’s name from a list of four or five name possibilities. Researchers find that people are able to recognize the first name of an unfamiliar face at a higher rate than expected. In other words, there is something about an Emily that...... just looks like an Emily.

According to the study, the ability to get a stranger’s name right requires the reliance on existing stereotypes. When people attempt to pair a name with a facial image, they may refer to that fixed idea to get some clues. Given that, even a computer should be able to guess one’s name and further produce a “heat map” for each name, with features that “betray” a person carrying that name marked in red or orange.

Interestingly, the findings also reveal that the face-name effect occurs even if we can only see the hair of a person. Our hair is possibly the part of our face that we control with the most ease. The fact that this alone can produce the face-name effect further illustrates the suspected self-fulfilling mechanism behind it: the idea that if other people expect certain things from a person, that individual may eventually fulfill these expectations.

Together, the study suggests that we wear our social belonging on our face, and that we actively shape our features to be recognized by our reference group. Choosing baby names remains exciting. Whatever first name you give to your child, he or she will end up wearing it.

    【1】What was the participants’ assignment?

A.To pick out ID-style photos they’d never met.

B.To match strangers’ photos with their names.

C.To find out Emily from various ID photos.

    D.To understand Emily’s character.

【2】According to the text, a stereotype is ______ that a society has of a particular person or thing.

    A.A reasonable idea

    B.A personal idea

    C.A rooted idea

    D.A creative idea

【3】How is the “heat map” formed according to paragraph 3?

A.By drawing a map for each name.

B.By sorting out different faces in a map.

C.By showing a person’s face in different colors.

D.By highlighting certain features in warm colors.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.It’s not totally unreliable to judge a book by its cover.

B.Hairstyle accounts for nothing in one’s appearance.

C.A fixed idea that a given society has can determine one’s look.

D.Choosing the first name of a baby is no fun.

  • 23、When you think of the Arctic, you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish. “And now”, CNN says, “It's the Arctic's turn.”

German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1800 pieces of microplastics per liter of snow.

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, “It's clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air.” They fall off the plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in.

Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the WHO. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Earlier research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, hurting ecosystems along the way. They start in our wastewater, then flow into rivers and out to the sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The Arctic has been polluted by plastic rubbish

B.The Arctic is an icy land of pure white snow.

C.The Arctic is a beautiful icy land with clean air.

D.The Arctic is the last rally clean place left on earth

    A.From water.

    B.From air.

    C.From wind.

    D.From food.

【3】What does the underlined expression mean in the fourth paragraph?

    A.Reduce.

    B.Donate.

    C.Cause.

    D.Help.

【4】How does the writer end this passage?

A.By advising us to drink clean water.

B.By asking people not to eat sea animals.

C.By showing the beauty of Arctic.

D.By telling the seriousness of plastic pollution.

  • 24、“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and safe since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else's is the management's attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don't know what to say.  “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I'm terribly sorry, but have a nice day. ”

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heartwarming because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it's nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don't care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.

1How does the author understand Maxie's words?

    A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

    B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

    C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

    D. Maxie really worries about the author's safety.

2What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. The salesgirl is rude to the customers.   B. The salesgirl is bored with her work.

    C. The salesgirl cares about me.   D. The salesgirl says the words as usual.

3According to the last paragraph, people say “ Have a nice day” ______________.

    A. as a habit   B. as thanks

    C. sincerely   D. Encouragingly

4By saying “Have a nice day,” a stranger may ______.

    A. try to be polite to you   B. express respect to you

    C. give his blessings to you   D. share his pleasure with you
