二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、 My neighbor Mrs. Gargan first told me about it. “Have you seen the tree?” She asked as I was sitting in the backyard enjoying the autumn twilight (暮色). The one down at the corner, she explained. “It’s a beautiful tree—all kinds of colors. All the passers-by stop to have a look. You ought to see it.” I told her I would, but I soon forgot about the tree. Three days later, I was jogging down the street when a splash of bright orange caught my eyes. For an instant, I thought someone’s house had caught fire. Then I remembered the tree.

I approached the tree to look at it closely. There was nothing remarkable about the shape of the tree. It was a medium-sized maple. But Mrs. Gargan had been right about its colors. Like the mess of an artists palette(调色板), the tree blazed a bright crimson(深红色)on its lower branches and burned with vivid yellows and oranges in its center, and deep red at its top. Through these colors were light green leaves as yet untouched by autumn.

Walking closer I noticed several bare branches near the top, their small black branches scratching the air like claws. The fallen leaves lay like a red carpet around the trunk.

As I was amazed at this beauty, I thought of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s comments about the stars. If the constellations(星座)appeared only once in a thousand years, imagine what an exciting event it would be. But because they’re up there every night, we barely give them a look,” he made a remark in Nature.

I felt the same way about the tree. Because its beauty will last only a week, it should be especially precious to us. And I had almost missed it.

Once in the 19th century when a man noticed a brilliant display of northern lights(北极光)in the sky over Massachusetts, he rang a church bell to alert the whole town’s people. That’s what I felt like doing about the tree. I wanted to awake the countryside to its wonder.

I didn’t have a church bell, but as I walked home, I did ask each neighbor I passed the same simple but important question Mrs. Gargan had asked me: “Have you seen the tree?”.

【1】What did the author’s neighbor remind him?

    A. To appreciate the beauty of the sunset.

    B. To find what happened at the street corner.

    C. To draw a picture of a tree.

    D. To enjoy the beautiful tree in all colors.

2 From the passage we know _________.

    A. the author felt it precious to see the beauty of the tree

    B. the author thought of the stars as beautiful as the tree

    C. the remarkable scene of the tree only appeared in a thousand years

    D. People never had a close look at the tree

3 How did the author call on people to enjoy the wonder?

    A. He rang the church bell.

    B. He passed on the same question.

    C. He awakened all neighbors up.

    D. He required people to the corner.

4The best title of the passage can be ________.

    A. Have You Seen the Tree?

    B. The Most Beautiful Tree

    C. One of the Wonders in Nature

    D. The Precious Moment in Life

  • 22、   When Chef Enrique Olvera opened his restaurant, Pujol, 13 years ago, his only goal was to have the best restaurant in the neighborhood. Olvera's budget was so small that he had to do all the things himself. But Pujol is now widely thought of as Mexico's finest restaurant and the 36th best in the world. He reached his position by making his cuisine 'fancier and fancier, and more complex' over time. Pujol now serves a tasting menu of sophisticated food that wouldn't look out of place even at New York's Momofuku Ko. To decode his rocket soar in world cuisine circus, Olvera insists on mixing elaborate, cutting-edge techniques with a strong emphasis on local ingredients to create a cosmopolitan cuisine that's at once international yet unmistakably Mexican, matching the direction of Mexico City itself.

A visit to the 48-seat Pujol reveals a space-age kitchen containing 27 cooks, with one making his fifth attempt to reshape the egg liquid and another coloring potatoes. Pujol tolerates any grotesque attempt a chef could imagine and the restaurant is the trial site for its staff. That makes Pujol a hot place to attract free labor. The chef has also thought more about bringing Mexican cooks home from the U.S. Many are returning to move past the glass ceiling that exists in America. “Despite the number of Mexicans working in U.S. restaurants, you rarely see a Mexican head chef in a New York kitchen,” said Olvera. “Then why not come back here to attract diners here for the most local but also novel dishes?”

And for foreign diners, Mexican restaurants have another wonder to offer. Just think that merely 30 dollars can sustain you for a 4-course feast in an ordinary Mexican restaurant and no one could resist the temptation. To achieve such high cost performance, Olvera states that you have to keep looking for and exploring with the simple ingredients from which to accomplish amazing dishes. “You always cherish where you come from, but there’s also the need for new sensations. Keep exploring with new ideas until you get a better dish.” After all, it’s the soul of modem cuisine.

【1】Why has Pujol become so successful?

A.Because Olvera aimed low in the first place.

B.Because Olvera forms the habit of doing things by himself.

C.Because Olvera attracts excellent cooks from the U.S.

D.Because Olvera combines cooking skills with local characteristics.

【2】The underlined word grotesque is closest in meaning to _____.

    A.forceful.

    B.weird.

    C.abstract.

    D.painful.

【3】Why would many Mexican chefs come back to the country?

A.Because Pujol provides them with high titles and salaries.

B.Because they find it hard to rise to senior positions in U.S. restaurants.

C.Because they cook Mexican food better than American food.

D.Because they refer to the high cost performance of the restaurants.

【4】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Momofuku Ko is a famous food critic.

B.Olvera relies totally on foreign cutting-edge cooking techniques.

C.Eating in ordinary Mexican restaurants is expensive.

D.One key to success in today’s restaurant business is continuous innovation.

  • 23、   They’re in restaurants, hotels and homes all over the world. The saltwater aquarium, with its colour fish, bring a piece of the wild into your living room.

But do you really know where those saltwater fish come from? A full 97 percent, yes, almost all kinds of saltwater fish can’t be bred in captivity (人工养殖). They must instead be taken from the ocean. And how is that done?

Most of the time, with sodium cyanide, it is a harmful chemical compound that many fish collectors in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia use to catch fish. They mix it with water and use it on the fish. Stunned, the fish can then be easily caught.

What does cyanide do to the fish? There is a scientific study on cyanide’s effects. When there is cyanide in water, fish lose their balance and have difficulty breathing. Some fish simply die then and there. Many, many more die on the way to captivity.

Although cyanide fishing in the Philippines, Sir Lanka, and Indonesia is not allowed, it sill happens too often. According to the World wildlife Fund, up to 90 percent of the saltwater fish that enter the US each year are caught this way. The Center for Biological Diversity is calling on the US government to avoid these imports.

“Compared to many environmental problems now facing the world’s oceans, this is one that can easily be solved,” said Nicholas Whipps of the Center. “Because the US is such a powerful market player in this industry, the responsibility to stop this practice falls largely on the United State’ shoulders.”

In the Philippines, private planes bring in cyanide to the fisherman and then take away the live fish. Live fish give the fisherman a better life than dead ones, so more and more fishermen have turned from supplying the fish-for-food trade to the fish-for-aquariums trade.

The Center for Biological Diversity hopes the government will use the law to turn away cyanide-caught fish and persuade people to buy those only raised in captivity.

1What can we lean about cyanide fishing?

    A. It is within the law. B. It is the main reason why fish die.

    C. It brings death to many fish. D. It causes health problems for fishermen.

2A fish collector can easily catch saltwater fish when ________.

    A. they become sick B. they are swimming in cyanide-filled water

    C. they consider cyanide as food D. they get out of breath while trying to escape

3The underline word “this” in Paragraph 6 refers to _________.

    A. importing fish from foreign countries B. using private planes to carry fish

    C. overfishing in the ocean D. catching fish with cyanide

4What does the Center want Americans to do?

    A. Say no to cyanide-caught fish. B. Keep cyanide fishing.

    C. Stay away from the harmful cyanide. D. Raise more fish in captivity.

  • 24、For more than 100 million years sea turtles (海龟) have covered huge distances across the world’s oceans, making them among the oldest creatures on the planet. However, they are on the list of endangered species.

Different from some animals like snakes, the sex of the baby sea turtles, called hatchlings, is determined by the environment after fertilization (受精). The temperature of the eggs during a certain period of development is the deciding factor in determining sex, and small changes in temperature can cause very big changes in the sex ratio (比例). Often, eggs at low temperatures (22—27℃) produce males, while eggs at higher temperatures (30℃ and above) produce females. At temperatures in between, both sexes will be produced. If temperature reaches 36℃, no hatchlings will be produced.

Climate change has a powerful effect on turtle nesting (筑巢) sites. It changes sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of the hatchlings. Scientists have found that unusually warm temperatures caused by climate change are upsetting the normal ratios, resulting in fewer male hatchlings. The past four hottest summers in Florida have seen only female sea turtles. And an Australian study has shown a similar effect in which 99% of the hatchlings are female.

In addition to rising temperatures, turtles are also facing the threat of too much plastic in the oceans, along with a number of other threats. “Plastic pollution is a problem for turtles as they can mistake plastics for food easily. Even a single piece of plastic can kill a turtle,” Dr Couper, working at the Queensland Museum, said. “We have collected some plastics taken from turtles’ stomachs to show people what kinds of things are showing up on beaches. I want it to be an eye opener.”

【1】Which temperature is good for a balanced sex ratio of turtle hatchlings?

    A.26℃.

    B.29℃.

    C.31℃.

    D.36℃.

【2】What can be inferred from paragraph 3?

A.Sea turtles will build their nesting sites elsewhere.

B.Global warming is an extreme threat to sea turtles.

C.Climate change is much more obvious in Australia.

D.Over 90% of the turtle hatchlings are female globally.

【3】What does Dr. Couper intend to say?

A.Turtles do not have enough food sources.

B.Turtles do not have a good sense of smell.

C.People should clean up beaches more often.

    D.People should raise environmental awareness.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.

No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.

I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.

I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home. I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew... until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way

I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away —as if punishing myself could undo things.

“I would tell everything to Grandpa,” a voice inside me said.

“I was wrong.” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.
