  • 21、STAY HUNGER

    STAY FOOLISH

I’m honored to be with you today for your commencement. I want to tell you three stories from my life.

The first story is about connecting the dots. When I was at Reed College, it offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. I decided to take a calligraphy class. At that time none of what I learned about calligraphy seemed to have even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. Of course it was impossible to connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

My second story is about love and loss. I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents’ garage when I was twenty. And then at thirty, I got fired. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still love what I did. And so I decided to start over. During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, and I returned to Apple. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. So, if you haven’t found what you love, keep looking. Don’t settle.

My third story is about death. When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “ If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for “prepare to die”. Later it turned out to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and, thankfully, I am fine now. This was the closest I’ve been to facing death. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you: Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called the Whole Earth Catalog. On the back cover of the final issue were the words: “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin new, I wish that for you. Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

    Thank you all very much.

【1】What happened to Steve Jobs when he was at Reed college?

A.He shared his three stories with classmates.

B.He designed the first Macintosh computer.

C.He took a class about producing beautiful writing.

【2】What did he do during the five years after he was fired by Apple?

A.He started a company named NeXT.

B.He took up his job together with Woz.

C.He gave up his career as a computer engineer.

D.He gave a commence speech at Stanford University.

【3】How was he one year before he made his speech?

    A.He decided to start over.

    B.He was diagnosed with cancer.

C.He struggled in running the Apple.

D.He published the Whole Earth Catalog.

【4】What does “Stay hungry. Stay foolish” mean in Job’s speech?

    A.Make your friends trust you.

B.Forget the mistakes of the past.

C.Talk health and happiness to people.

    D.Keep struggling, keep dream-chasing!

  • 22、   Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.

One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents' victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).

1According to the author, recent Olympic Games have _______.

    A.created goodwill between the nations

    B.hardly showed any international friendship

    C.caused only false national pride

D.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

2What did the manager mean by saying, “...Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?

A.Hockey and the Federation are ruined by the unfair decisions.

B.His team would no longer take part in international games.

C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.

    D.The Federation should be ended.

3Which statement best summarizes this passage?

    A.Athletes should compete as individuals.

B.Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.

C.Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.

D.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

  • 23、The Surprisingly Easy Trick That Can Help You Use Your Phone a Little Bit Less

The first thing I do in the mornings is look at my phone. That’s mainly because my phone is my alarm clock, but once my eyes are open and that screen is lit up in my hands, it’s an awfully short trip to checking emails and perusing headlines.1My emails that early in the morning are mainly junk, and the headlines won’t change much before I’ve brushed my teeth and poured a cup of coffee, right?

My wife says I’m addicted to my phone.2I’m not terribly active on social media, but I do enjoy me some idle scrollingenjoy playing the mobile phone. And, wow, do these tech companies know how to keep those thumbs constantly swiping up.

3 While I think we’re pretty good about limiting her screen time, it would seem that technology has had its hooks in me from the start. So, I decided to try loosening my phone’s grasp on my attention by switching the screen to black and white.

Changing the display to black and white is very easy. In your iPhone’s settings, choose General, then Accessibility. Next choose Display Accommodations, then Color Filters. Tap the toggle on and a list of filters appears.4

But no one wants to go through all this every time they want to turn color back on to check out an Instagram story. Clearly, you don’t always want your screen to be black and white. After all, there will unavoidably be photos to view and videos to share.5In the Accessibility menu, tap Accessibility Shortcut and choose Color Filters. Now, pressing the home button three times will switch your display to color, and then back with another three.

    A. There’s no reason for me to be doing this.

    B. We’ve got a three-year-old child.

    C. Choose Grayscale and you’re all set.

    D. It can help you use your phone a little bit less

    E. I disagree, but I can definitely stand to spend less time looking at it.

    F. Here comes a surprisingly easy trick.

    G. That is what makes setting a shortcut necessary.

  • 24、“Don’t get discouraged, Hallie,” Kathy said, comforting her with a hug. “It sounds as if you have a bit of a mystery to solve. Maybe you should do a little spying on Maya.”

Feeling better, Hallie put on her scuba gear(潜水服)again and waited. Maya, the dolphin, had been swimming playfully, but suddenly she threw herself to the back of the tank where the filter box(过滤箱)was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away.

Hallie followed Maya. “What was she doing here?” she wondered. When she looked behind the box, her question was answered. She swam back and saw Maya was in front of Kathy with a comb in her mouth waiting for her treat.

“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Kathy, taking the comb and throwing her a fish.

“I know,” declared Hallie, handing Kathy a handful of items, “I followed her to the filter box and these are what I found.”

From the look on Kathy’s face, Hallie knew everything was beginning to come to light.

“Do you remember the other day you said that Maya really liked her treats?” asked Kathy.“Well, I think this was more than a training exercise for Maya. Every time you found something in the tank, that meant one less fish for Maya. She couldn’t bring all the items to me at once, so she found a hiding place for them. That way you came up empty-handed, but Maya would always get her treat.”

“Okay, Maya,” said Hallie facing the dolphin, “you win! The treats are all yours.”

Maya dived down, and then jumped out of the water, turning herself over in midair. Shaking their heads in disbelief, Hallie and Kathy reached for the fish. Maya deserved the treat.

1What was the “mystery” in the story?

    A. The secret of Maya’s finding the items.

    B. The secret of Hallie’s winning the game.

    C. The reason for Maya’s liking her treats.

    D. The reason for Hallie’s spying on Maya.

2Maya hid the items because she considered Hallie as a ________.

    A. spy

    B. competitor

    C. playmate

    D. trainer

3At the end of the story, Hallie and Kathy thought Maya was ________.

    A. energetic

    B. genuine

    C. loyal

    D. smart
