  • 21、Japan has a population of 127 million. Tokyo is the largest city and holds one third of the population in the country. There are thousands of people passing by in a minute at the center of the busiest crossing in the city. At weekends, the supermarkets and subway stations are crowded with people.

Japan's government is considering a new way to get people to consider life outside Tokyo: Pay them to leave.

According to a report from NHK on Nov. 22, if someone decides to move from the 23 blocks of Tokyo and find jobs somewhere else, the government will think about giving as much as 3 million yuan to people. The population is increasing all the time in Tokyo and the areas around the city even though the whole population of Japan reduces. That's often been at the cost of other cities. The number of people moving to Tokyo has exceeded the number moving out for 22 years and the number counting. Nearly one out of every three people in Japan lives in the Tokyo area.

In the past several years, Japan's government has taken many measures to encourage people to keep away from the capital. for example, help build smaller population areas. Some local governments have used tax cuts to encourage companies to leave the Tokyo area, while others will pay them to leave.

But Japan's large government institutions, its top schools, as well as companies all lie in Tokyo, leaving the capital seems to be a day dream for most Japanese.

  • 23、Cows produce much methane (甲烷) the world’s second worst greenhouse gas, as they break down the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food.

Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They added a small amount of seaweed to the cows’ food.

The consequences were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane. Over the five months, the scientists didn’t see any signs that the cows’ stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What’s more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows.

But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there’s not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there’s no chance to feed them seaweed every day.

Still, as the study shows, something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.

【1】Why did the researchers carry out the study?

A.To test the effects of the seaweed.

B.To discover healthier grass for cows.

C.To improve the cows’ living conditions.

D.To measure the amount of methane in the world.

【2】What’s the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The background of the subject.

    B.The results of the study.

    C.The content of the experiment.

    D.The process of the research.

【3】What is the biggest challenge in the researchers’ opinion?

A.Seaweed is not as tasty as grass.

B.Seaweed is dying out in the world.

C.Cows fed with seaweed gained weight easily.

D.Cows can hardly have daily access to seaweed.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the findings?

    A.Positive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Negative.

  • 24、While travel is restricted during this time, here are some amazing places around the world to daydream about and look forward to visiting one day in the future.

    Lord Howe Island, Australia

The island in the Tasman Sea lies between Australia and New Zealand and is just 10km long. Despite its complete isolation, the island is populated, by around 380 people and the number of tourists is limited to under 400. The island is known for its geology, birds, plants and marine life, while cycling is the main mode of transport on the island, thanks to its virtually untouched forest and the fact that many of its plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world.

    Thors Well, Oregon

Also called “the drainpipe of the Pacific” or even sometimes, “the gate to hell”, the hole appears to swallow the Pacific Ocean. Geyser-like ocean sprays erupt in winter time, thanks to ocean pressure and the gusting wind. It looks more dangerous than it is though; it is in reality just around 20 feet deep. The natural bowl is spectacular to watch, particularly during low tide when the sea rises towards the surface before draining back down into the depths of the rocky hole again.

Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), Hawaii

Hawaiians call Keahiakawelo “wahi pana”, which means celebrated, noted or legendary places which have cultural significance. As legend goes, the priest of neighboring Molokai island, a man named Lanikaula, was angry at the people of Lanai, so he lit a fire wishing ill will to the island’s people.

Balamku (Cave of the Jaguar God), Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

The cave was rediscovered accidentally in 2018 by archaeologists who were searching for a sacred well. The seven-chambered cave was initially discovered in 1966 but was sealed up and forgotten about. Caves were considered openings to the underworld, and this one is no different. The name means jaguar god, which they believed had the ability to enter and leave the underworld at will. The cave is so unexplored that archaeologists are still mapping it out.

【1】How do people often travel on Lord Howe Island?

    A.By boat.

    B.By bike.

    C.On foot.

    D.By car.

【2】What is the best time to watch Thor’s Well?

    A.During low tide.

    B.In winter time.

    C.When the sea rises.

    D.After the sea dries.

【3】Which of the following is thought to be the opening to the underworld?

    A.Lord Howe Island.

    B.Thor’s Well.

    C.Keahiakawelo.

    D.Balamku.
