22、 About 10 percent of public school students in the United States learn English as a second language. In some states, that number is much higher. About five million students in the country are considered English language learners, or ELLs. Such students are the fast-growing group in the US public schools.
The most commonly first spoken languages among ELLs in America are Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole and Vietnamese. Speakers of those five languages make up 92 percent of all ELLs included in the report.
English language learners can choose one of several kinds o1 program. There are some programs, in which students are mostly taught in their native language. And there are other programs, which offer students almost all classroom teaching in English. However, These kinds of programs do not always allow students to write and read in their native language.
There are also so-called bilingual programs. These programs offer teaching in two languages-English and another language. Research has shown that English language learners do best in bilingual programs, especially if the second language is their native language.
The lack of high-quality bilingual programs is clear. Nationally, about 83 percent of students complete their high school education. But the graduation rate (比率) among English language learners is far lower 65 percent.
School systems across the country sometimes look for bilingual educators internationally. But education experts say there are ways for states to find and train new teachers in their own areas. This spring, America came up with a list of “grow your own” rules for schools and states to follow. It advised states to offer a series of ways for bilingual teachers. It also suggested training bilingual teachers in their own areas even if they do not have a college degree.

23、Kindness when travelling comes in so many forms. However, the story that happened in Greece has touched me the most.
I arrived late in Thessaloniki after my flight from the Czech Republic was delayed over three hours. Luckily, my Airbnb hostess still picked me up from the airport and made the 40-minute drive to her place. We got there around 11 pm!
As Greece was the starting point for the Middle East and the last place in my plan that used Euros as currency(货币), I ran low on cash. So I made a decision that I wouldn’t be spending any money on dinner that night. Instead, I would choose a cheap breakfast the next day. Upon hearing this, the mother of the lady hugged me tightly, said something in Greek, laughed, and left. I thought this was a goodnight hug and I prepared to go to bed.
A little bit later the older lady returned, with her daughter and a big plate of cheese, boiled eggs, and salad. She wouldn’t allow me to go to bed without a late-night dinner. I was totally surprised by this kind act towards a stranger. The meal was delicious, and although I tried to offer the ladies money as a thank you for their kindness, they refused. All the worries of the day disappeared and I went to bed smiling and with a full belly.
I loved everything Thessaloniki offered in the way of history, culture, and natural beauty. Despite the ongoing economic difficulties, this friendly Greek family fed a hungry stranger and really made my time in the northern part of Greece.

B.The late-night dinner.
C.The Greek culture.
D.The confusing language.
【4】What is the purpose of the text?

24、As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.
One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.
Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”
【1】The passage tells us that .
A. people seldom work long hours to make money
B. people hardly buy more things than necessary
C. people are sure everything they own is in the right place
D. people realize there is more to life than just making money
【2】Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm ____.
A. was easy to organize B. has improved family life
C. was extremely expensive D. has been a total success
【3】What does the author mean by saying “the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph?
A. People work long hours to earn their living.
B. To make more money through hard work is the aim of people’s life.
C. Long hours of hard work occupy too much of people’s life.
D. People spent too much time and money eating meals.

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60左右的内容概要。
Getting up early has been regarded as a good habit since ancient times. Many years ago, people thought that if we went to bed early and got up early, we would be energetic the whole day. So, getting up early is of great importance to us all.
In fact, morning is the best time of a day. In the morning, the air is the freshest and people are usually in the best conditions. Many of us may have the experiences that we memorize some things more quickly and accurately in the morning than at any other time of the day.
Additionally, if we get up early and do some morning exercise or only take a short walk in the morning, without doubt we can build our bodies and become much healthier. That is why many people getting up early do physical exercise year after year.
We will also have enough time to make a plan and get ready for our work or study of the day if we get up early. For example, if everyone in the family gets up early, we will have enough time to prepare the breakfast for the whole family. Children will have enough time to catch the school bus, and husband will never forget to change his dirty shirt. Everything is in order. What a harmonious scene! However, if we get up late, we will probably have to do everything in a great hurry, making it in a mess.
Let us remember getting up early is a good habit. If you are a late riser, you may find it difficult to form the habit of getting up early. You will have to make efforts to do so. If you want to get up early, sleeping earlier the night before expect to be successful. Besides, you can set your alarm clock or ask someone whom you know will be awake at that time to call you. If you stick to getting up early every day, you will certainly benefit a lot from it.
