  • 22、A newly-published study has shown that loneliness can spread from one person to another, like a disease. Researchers used information from the Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948. The Framingham study gathers information about physical and mental health, personal behavior and diet. At first, the study involved about 5,000 people in the American state of Massachusetts. Now, more than 12,000 individuals are taking part.

Information from the Framingham study showed earlier that happiness can spread from person to person. So can behaviors like littering and the ability to stop smoking.

John Cacioppo, a psychologist in the University of Chicago, led the recent study. He and other researchers attempted to show how often people felt lonely. They found that the feeling of loneliness spread through social groups.

Having a social connection with a lonely person increased the chances that another individual would feel lonely. In fact, a friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. A friend of that person was 25% more likely. The researchers say this shows that a person could indirectly be affected by someone’s loneliness.

The effect was strongest among friends. Neighbors were the second most affected group. The effect was weaker on husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters. The researchers also found that loneliness spread more easily among women than men.

The New York Times reports that, on average, people experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year and that every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about 5%, or two and a half fewer lonely days.

Loneliness has been linked to health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties. The researchers believe that knowing the causes of loneliness could help in reducing it.

The study suggests that people can take steps to stop the spread of loneliness. They can do this by helping individuals they know who may be experiencing loneliness. The result can be helpful to the whole social group.

【1】What is true about the Framingham study?

A.It was only conducted in 1948.

B.It involves more than 12,000 participants.

C.It was led by John Cacioppo.

D.It showed that any behavior could spread.

【2】From the passage, we can learn that .

A.the habit of littering doesn’t spread

B.a lonely person won’t have friends

C.everyone may be affected by others’ loneliness

D.lonely people don’t know the cause of their loneliness

【3】If you make 10 more friends in a year, the days of your feeling loneliness will be reduced by .

    A.48 days

    B.25 days

    C.20 days

    D.15 days

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Action should be taken to help lonely people.

B.People feel lonely for many reasons.

    C.Ways to fight against loneliness.

    D.Lonely people can affect others.

  • 23、   Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized(分类)as “honor” helps you create this life of good feelings.

Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge(收费)us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate(证明;表明)that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility(崇高,高贵).

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

1According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our   .

    A.self-respect B.financial rewards

    C.advertising ability D.friendly relationship

2The author thinks that keeping silent about the unchanged item is equal to   .

    A.lying B.stealing C.cheating D.advertising

3The phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” in Paragraph 5 means   .

A.telling the truth to the clerk B.offering advice to the clerk

C.asking the clerk to be attentive D.reminding the clerk of the prices

4How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

    A.We’ll be very excited.

    B.We’ll feel unfortunate.

C.We’ll have a sense of honor.

D.We’ll feel sorry for the clerk.

5Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

    A.How We Can Live Truthfully

    B.The Importance of Peacefulness

    C.Ways of Gaining Self-respect

    D.Happiness through Honorable Actions

  • 24、   When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done.

These days, the time is everywhere, not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work.New research shows that clock-based.work schedules hinder (阻碍) morale and creativity.

Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.,research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task - timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.

What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities-from project planning, holiday. shopping,to yoga-by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under "clock time" vs "task time". They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.

The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in the business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies.

This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.

1What does the author think of time displayed everywhere?

    A.It makes everybody time-conscious.

B.It is a convenience for work and life.

C.It may have a negative effect on creative work.

D.It clearly indicates the fast pace of modem life.

2How do people usually go about their work according to the author?

    A.They combine clock-based and task-based planning.

B.They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.

C.They set a time limit for each specific task.

D.They accomplish their tasks one by one.

3What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about clock timers?

A.They seize opportunities as they come up.

B.They always get their work done in time.

C.They have more control over their lives.

D.They tend to be more productive.

4What do the researchers say about today's business culture?

A.It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.

B.It does not attach enough importance to task - based practice.

C.It places more emphasis on work efficiency than on workers' lives.

D.It aims to bring employees' potential and creativity into full play.

    5What do the researchers suggest?

A.Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.

B.It is important to keep a balance between work and life.

C.Task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.

D.A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.
