二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Having just finished high school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study in higher education, so I decided to take a gap year to figure that out.

One of my biggest passions has always been Africa and I have always wanted to do some kind of volunteering. However, I was afraid that, especially when it comes to volunteering in research, I wouldn’t be able to go into much depth with the research I would be doing. I needn’t have worried about this internship(实习期)though. It has been perfect for me because not only am I doing the same activities as all the other volunteers but I also get to do my own research in addition to those activities.

The internship program I am following focuses on big predators(食肉动物). I have decided to focus on cheetahs(猎豹)for my individual project, collecting data on the two cheetahs that live in Rietspruit, one of the reserves that African Impact does research in. With both cheetahs having only been reintroduced into the area this year, there is still a lot of data that can be collected on the pair. Large predator reintroduction is a common strategy used to return these animals to their historic range. The problem is that the success rates of these reintroductions are very low, mainly because of lack in research done on how different factors influence the reintroduction.

Both cheetahs are wearing a GPS-collar from which I can download a lot of information including where the cheetah has been, what the weather was like and how far the cheetah travelled. Having organized and categorized the information, I have been able to create some very interesting graphs.

Even though it is quite difficult since I’ve never done any research like this, I really enjoy all the challenges and problems I have had to face and solve. And I’m glad that I can do something to help wildlife.

1Why did the author take a gap year after high school?

A.He was asked to do some voluntary work.

B.He didn’t think he was quite ready yet.

C.He wanted to do some travelling in Africa.

D.He didn’t really like receiving higher education.

2What did the author realize after joining the internship program?

A.It was what he had expected.

    B.It separated him from others.

C.It was too challenging for him.

D.It was really suitable for him.

    3The author’s work mainly involves ___________.

    A.collecting information about two cheetahs

B.observing two cheetahs in the wild secretly

C.walking around Rietspruit to serve scientists

D.collecting data on some different big predators

4What is the best title for the text?

A.My experience on the predator research internship

B.My experience of rescuing wildlife in Africa

C.My experience of receiving higher education

    D.My experience of protecting cheetahs

  • 22、   An international group of coffee experts has considered Ethiopia’s coffee as the best in the world. Coffee is a top export of the country. But at home, it is seen as national pride. Ethiopians feel good about their coffee, and enjoying a drink with friends is a long tradition.

International coffee experts travel the world to find the best coffee. They keep returning to Ethiopia. Some people say the climate produces quality beans. Morton Wenner is a coffee importer. He said, “Ethiopia has different ancient types of coffee. They are planted in places with perfect soil, perfect altitude, and climates that are really suitable for coffee processing, such as drying and things like that.”

Finding the best quality beans is often an issue of taste. The process is known as cupping — tasting and comparing coffee from different roasted beans, grading and then pricing them.

But before international experts come to taste, coffee beans are studied in small coffee laboratories. Helen Assefa, a lab technician, describes the process, “When the coffee comes to the lab, we assess its quality first by recording the details. Then we weigh the wetness level and screen the beans for analysis. After that we polish the coffee beans and taste the samples. At the end we check for imperfect beans.”

Ethiopia is making big profits on its coffee reputation by exporting coffee to more than 120 countries. The country has an export income of more than $840 million a year. But not all the best coffee leaves Ethiopia. Forty percent of the coffee grown in the country stays there. It remains an important part of everyday life at work, at home and at ceremonies just to celebrate that special cup.

1Where does the Ethiopian’s pride mainly come from?

    A. Traditional practices. B. Food export. C. International experts. D. Best coffee.

2Ethiopia produces best coffee because of ____________.

    A. the special coffee taste B. the long-standing tradition

    C. the satisfactory mild climate D. the favorable growing environment

3Which of the following describes the process of studying coffee beans in the lab?

    a. polish and taste

    b. weigh the dampness level

    c. record quality facts

    d. analyze the beans

    e. check for imperfection

    A. d-c-b-a-e B. c-b-d-a-e C. e-c-a-b-d D. c-d-a-b-e

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Coffee is essential in Ethiopians’ daily lives.

    B. Coffee is the most profitable industry in Ethiopia.

    C. Most of the coffee production remains in Ethiopia.

    D. Ethiopians often hold ceremonies to celebrate harvest.

  • 23、We have some practically secret national parks on our lists that you'll want to visit this spring.

    Guadalupe Mountains National Park

The most visually striking point here is El Capitan. The massive cliff (悬崖), 2.5 times as tall as the Empire State Building, towers over the rest of the park, which offers you a perfect spot for taking impressive pictures. You can also wander the Salt Basin Dunes, 2,000 acres of shockingly white sands. If you're taking very long hikes, bring plenty of water and some protein-rich snacks.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument preserves more than 87,500 acres of wild rivers and thick forests. In addition to hiking and camping, Katahdin is a great spot for hunting and fishing. Bring some hiking boots and perhaps trekking poles (登山杖)to cross these rocky forest trails. The park has a day use fee of $5, and the first-come, first-serve campsites cost $8 per night.

    North Cascades National Park

Though the snowy peaks of the North Cascades are dangerous in the winter, it turns into a thick and green park in the warmer months, filled with beautiful mountain valleys and clear lakes. You can take a guided nature hike or go fishing. Winter driving conditions in the North Cascades can be dangerous, due to water, frost, snow, or ice on the roads.

    Organ Mountains.—Desert Peaks National Monument

This is not a national park, but is a national monument. It is home to several rare species of plants and animals, and lava (炫岩)flow. There are excellent chances for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and nature photography, as well as overnight hiking. You can also go primitive camping anywhere in the monument for free. It's highly recommended that you should bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and know your fitness level ahead of time.

  • 24、I wonder if my make-up is ok. What will I say to him? Carefully, I stepped out of my car as my date made his way over to me.

“I’ve got you something,” he greeted me with a huge smile on his face. “Something every girl secretly longs for (渴望).” Standing in front of me, he slid something into my hand. I looked down to find candy — but not just any candy — A Sugar Daddy!

I relaxed immediately. This was the funny man I had been talking to. Little did he know, my secret longing was really to make a good impression on him.

A good first impression is important. So, how do you, when you’re meeting someone for the first time, make certain he or she doesn’t get the wrong image of you?

A study concluded that the first 30 seconds make or break the connection between two people when they meet for the first time. Another study conducted by UCLA found that “people evaluate one another by using the three V’s: visual (appearance), vocal (voice) and verbal (what you say).”

Before you head out on your next date to meet someone new, let’s concentrate on these areas:

●How others will see you. (Visual) Are you dressed well? Do you look like this date is important to you? Did you take some time with your appearance? Watch your manners: people don’t like bad manners.

●How others will hear you. (Vocal) Is your voice too soft? You might come across as insecure. If you speak softly, make an effort to speak clearly — don’t make your date have to work to hear you.

●What others will hear you say. (Verbal) People have a natural desire to connect — let them know you’re interested in what they have to say by repeating it back to them. Don’t say the same thing everyone else is saying.

1What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Good measures to communicate with others

    B. How to make friends with others

    C. How to enjoy yourself in your life

    D. The importance of a good first impression

2According to the text, when you want to make friends with someone, ______.

    A. you should try to master the first few seconds

    B. you should talk as much as possible

    C. you should wear strange clothes to give him or her a deep impression

    D. there is no need for you to treat it seriously

3Which of the following belongs to the description of “Vocal”?

    A. Dress yourself very well.   B. Spend some time on your appearance.

    C. Speak carefully and clearly.   D. Repeat the same thing several times.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour. ”

Groups of incoming freshmen happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother's side to tour the campus with other freshmen;I felt a little anxious.

We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made casual introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this ? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college. . . ?

My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, "Hi, I'm Jennifer. " "I'm Lauren, "I replied. "Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus? "she smiled. "I'm not sure, "I said. "You should live on campus! It will be a lot of fun! "she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.

We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告)and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn't even opened my course catalog (目 录).

"Focus, "I told myself. "Just read through the catalog and find the courses you like and a schedule that works. "Psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, History, sections 1, 2, 3. . . The list went on and on.

I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it?I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.

    Paragraph 1:

Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.
