二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A Different Kind of Spring Break

For many American university students, the week-long spring break holiday means an endless part on a sunny beach in Florida or Mexico. In Panama City Beach, Florida, a city with a permanent population of approximately 36,000, more than half a million university students arrive during the month of March to play and party, making it the number one spring break destination in the United States.

A week-long drinking binge is not for everyone, however, and a growing number of American university students have found a way to make spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to travel locally or internationally and work to address problems such as poverty, homelessness, or environmental damage makes spring break a unique learning experience that university students can feel good at.

During one spring break week, students at James Madison University in Virginia participated in 15 “alternative spring break” trips to nearby states, three others to more distant parts of the United States, and five international trips. One group of JMU students traveled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Another group traveled to Mississippi to organize creative activities for children living in a homeless shelter. One group of students did go to Florida, but not to lie on the sand. They performed exhausting physical labor such as maintaining roving invasive plant species that threaten the native Florida ecosystem.

Students who participate in alternative spring break projects find them very rewarding. While most university students have to get their degrees before they can start helping people, student volunteers are able to help people now. On the other hand, the accommodations are far from glamorous. Students often sleep on the floor of a school or church, or spend the week camping in tents. But students only pay around $250 for meals and transportation, which is much less than some of their peers spend to travel to more traditional spring break hot spot.

1How many university students travel to Panama Beach City every March for spring break?

    A. Around 36,000. B. Around 50,000.

    C. Around 500,000. D. Around 10,000.

2The underlined word “binge” in paragraph 2 probably means ______.

    A. doing too much of something B. studying for too long

    C. refusing to do something D. having very little alcohol

3Which of the following gives the main idea of the third paragraph?

    A. One group of JMU students worked on homes damaged by a hurricane.

    B. Children living in homeless shelters enjoy creative activities.

    C. Some students work to help the environment on alternative spring break trips.

    D. University students do different types of work on alternative spring break trips.

4What is implied in this article is that ______.

    A. university students spend more than $250 for traditional spring break trips

    B. university students complain about the accommodations on alternative spring break trips

    C. university students may take fewer alternative spring break trips in the future

    D. university students would prefer to wait until they have their degrees to start helping people

  • 22、In most Hollywood movies, the Native American Navajos still fight on horses in the American Southwest. But during World War II, a group of Navajos made their language into weapon to protect the United States. They were the Navajo Code Talkers, and theirs is one of the few unbroken codes (电码)in military history.

Navajo was the perfect choice for a secret language. It is very complex. One vowel (元音)can have up to ten different pronunciations, changing the meaning of any word. In the 1940s, Navajo was unwritten language. No one outside of the reservation could speak it or understand it.

The Navajo Code team had to invent new words to describe military equipment. For example, they named ships after fish: lotso-whale (battleship), calo-shark (destroyer), beshloiron-fish (submarine). When a Code Talker received a message via radio, he heard a series of unrelated Navajo words. He would then translate the words into English and use the first letter of each English word to spell the message. The Navajo words tsah (needle), wol-la-chee (ant), ah-kh-di-glini (victor), and tsah-ah-dzoh (yucca) spelled NAVY.

The Code Talker kept the code a secret. They memorized everything. There were no code books. As a result, no ordinary Navajo soldiers, if captured by the enemy, could understand the code. More than 3,600 Navajos served in World War II, but only 420 were Code Talkers with the US Marines. They coded and decoded battlefield messages better and faster than any machine. They could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line English message in 20 seconds. Machines of the time required 30 minutes to perform the same job.

Even after the war the code remained top secret. When they were asked about their role, Code Talkers just said: “I was a radioman.” War movies and histories came out without mentioning them. The code was never used again and was finally declassified in 1968. Only then did the secret came out.

1What do we know about the Navajo language?

    A. It had complex spoken and written forms.

    B. It was created during the Second World War.

    C. It was understood only by the Navajos.

    D. It consisted of ten vowel letters in total.

2What did the Navajo Code team do after receiving a message?

    A. They put the unrelated Navajo words in order.

    B. They recorded the message in Navajo letters.

    C. They submitted it to the officer immediately.

    D. They turned It into English in a secret way.

3What does the underlined word “declassified” most probably mean?

    A. Replaced.   B. Approved.

    C. Made known.   D. Forbidden.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. The Navajo Code Talkers can be found to fight on horses in US movies.

    B. The Navajo language contributed a lot to the US army in World War II.

    C. War messages were translated into English through Navajo code books.

    D. Around 12% Navajo soldiers were taken prisoner during World War II.

  • 23、   Did you forget someone's name after you just met? Did you just talk about yourself the first time you met someone new? Ouch! You never have a second chance to make the first impression. So what can you do when the first impression is a negative one? 【1】

Apologize immediately. As soon as you realize that you may have offended (冒犯) someone, say something about it. The more time passes, the worse the situation can become. 【2】 So take control of the situation by making your last impression a positive one.

Avoid over—apologizing. Saying you're sorry is important. 【3】 Your goal is to admit your mistake responsibly and sensitively. If you repeatedly bring up the past, you're defeating your purpose. It puts the other person in the uncomfortable position of having to continually forgive you.

Make no assumption (假设). It's easy to assume that others think the worst of you, but usually what we imagine is far worse than reality. 【4】 Say something like, “I'm uncomfortable with how I behaved yesterday because I realized I might have offended you. Did you feel the same way?” The other person may think it was no big deal.

【5】 A sincere apology requires three steps. First, don't blame what happened on other people. Second, admit how your actions affected the other person. Third, explain what you will do differently in the future to avoid making the same mistake. Such an apology might sound like, “I want to apologize for what I said yesterday. After speaking with you, I can hear how much my comments offended you. I want you to know that I'll be more sensitive in the future.”

    A.Be sincere.

    B.Be sensitive.

C.Here are the ways to repair the first impression.

D.So don't start out with “You must think I'm a total fool.”

E.Every impression you make makes no difference to others.

F.But overdoing it can create another uncomfortable situation.

G.The first impression is important, and so is the last impression.

  • 24、Many studies have shown how playing video games can lead to structural changes in the brain, including increasing the size of some regions, or to functional changes, such as activating the areas responsible for attention. New research from the University at Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) has gone further to show how cognitive changes can take place even years after people stop playing.

The study involved 27 people between the ages of 18 and 40 with and without any kind of experience with video gaming.

“People who were video gamers before adolescence, despite no longer playing, performed better with the working memory tasks, which require mentally holding and processing information to get a result,” said Marc Palaus, the author of the study.

The results show that people without experience of playing video games as a child did not benefit from improvements in processing and avoiding irrelevant stimuli. Indeed, they were slower than those who had played games as children, which matched what had been seen in earlier studies.

“People who played regularly as children performed better from the outset in processing 3D objects, although these differences were narrowed after the period of training in video gaming, when both groups showed similar levels,” said Palaus.

The study lasted a month and the researchers analyzed participants’ cognitive skills, including working memory, at three points: before starting the training in video gaming, at the end of the training, and fifteen days later. The video game used was Nintendo’s Super Mario 64.

According to Palaus, what most video games have in common is that they involve elements that make people want to continue playing, and that they gradually get harder and present a constant challenge. “These two things are enough to make it an attractive and motivating activity, which, in turn, requires constant and intense use of our brain’s resources.”

“Video games are a perfect recipe for strengthening our cognitive skills, almost without our noticing. However, it’s not the reason for playing too much,” he said.

【1】What can be learned about the study?

    A.It looks at different games.

B.It is aimed at adult gamers.

    C.Its participants are adults.

    D.Its author likes playing games.

【2】How did people playing no video games as children behave in the study?

A.They tended to ignore irrelevant stimuli.

B.They failed to physically hold 3D objects.

C.They performed very slowly after training.

D.They did worse in working memory tasks.

【3】What may Mare Palaus suggest doing?

A.Finding recipes for better cognitive skills.

B.Avoiding getting addicted to video games.

    C.Trying less challenging video games.

D.For bidding video games for the young.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Playing Video Games as Kids Can Cause Changes in Brain

B.Video Gamers Memorize Information Much More Quickly

C.Video Games Help to Improve Children’s Working Memory

D.Playing Video Games Benefits Cognitive Skills Even Years Later
