二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As early as the twelfth century AD, the settlements of Chaco Canyon in Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for “their great houses” massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. 【1】 While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories.

One theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential. 【2】 Supporters of this theory have interpreted Chaco great houses as earlier versions of the architecture seen in more recent Southwest societies. In particular, the Chaco houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well known “apartment buildings” at Taos, New Mexico, in which many people have been living for centuries.

【3】 One of the main crops of the Chaco people was grain maize, which could be stored for long periods of time without spoiling and could serve as a long-lasting supply of food. The supplies of maize had to be stored somewhere. 【4】

A third theory proposes that houses were used as ceremonial centers. Close to one house, called Pueblo Alto, excavations of the mound revealed deposits containing a surprisingly large number of broken pots. 【5】. At the ceremonies, they ate festive meals and then discarded the pots in which the meals has been prepared or served.

A.Almost every structure houses hundreds of people.

B.Some experts think the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies.

C.Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used.

D.The size of the great houses would make them very suitable for the purpose.

E.Such ceremonies have been documented for other Native American cultures.

F.Archaeologists identified an enormous mound formed by a pile of old material.

G.This finding has been interpreted that people gathered at Pueblo Alto for special ceremonies.

  • 22、If it were up to me, I’d write this piece next week or even later. Let the dust settle a bit. But I have my father’s insistent voice in my head: the story is now, so you write it now. No one wants to read last week’s news.

My father Michael was a journalist. He started at age 16 on his local paper, the Luton News, and after nine years there, he went on to a six-decade career that saw him write more than 40 biographies of Hollywood stars and spend a quarter-century presenting a weekly radio show.

From him I learned about deadlines and accuracy, and absorbed his rule about professional clothing, one he had been taught by his first boss. Even when he was working at home, my father would follow that rule: shirt and tie, every day.

There were other less obvious lessons. The first is about being manly. Driven and competitive, he wasn’t present for the birth of any of his three children, but he was the very model of being loving and faithful. My father never took me to the football or taught me to change a tyre. In a pub, he might manage some drinks, but his main focus would usually be the food menu. He was a model of a different kind of maleness.

But perhaps the biggest lesson I learned from him was about resilience. He got deep blows, losing both his wife and firstborn child, my sister Fiona, within two years of each other. And yet, somehow, he got back up again. He taught himself to cook and continued to dress neatly, picking out a bright jacket that ensured he stood out in a room. He would meet editors and write stories with the same hunger he had 65 years earlier. Younger colleagues keep using the same word about him: appealing.

I hope I learned his resilience, the way I learned about being a journalist. People keep telling me that my father was proud of me; and the truth is I was proud of him. Raised in a hard-up corner of wartime England, he went off to see the world—and he never stopped looking forward and upward, staring at the stars.

1What has made the author write down the text so soon?

    A. His father’s words motivated him to do so.

    B. He wanted to settle down after the writing.

    C. He wanted to write it before he forgot it.

    D. It was the story he insisted on writing.

2What was the author’s impression of his father?

    A. He always managed to dress up following the fashion.

    B. He sometimes had a hard time meeting the work deadline.

    C. He trained the author to be manly and do the basic things.

    D. He was competitive at work and remained a loving Dad.

3What was the best lesson the author learned from his father?

    A. The necessity of keeping good shape.

    B. Quick recovery from suffering or blow.

    C. The ability to get a content career.

    D. The pride one takes in his/her parents.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Dad Left a Deep Impression on Me for His Work

    B. Dad Proved Faithful and Loving for the Family

    C. My Dad Showed How to Be a Journalist and a Man

    D. I Learned to Recover Quickly after a Suffering

  • 23、Ask bacteria where they’d like to live, and they’ll answer: a kitchen sponge (海绵), please.

Sponges are the best place for bacteria, capable of housing 54 billion bacteria per cubic centimeter. In addition to being damp, airy and loaded with food remains, sponges provide a perfect physical environment for bacteria.

Just like humans, bacteria prefer different levels of interactions with their peers. Some bacteria are more social, while others prefer staying alone. Researchers found that middling levels of separation—similar to that found in a sponge—maximize the diversity of the community.

Scientists separated different bacterial strains(菌株), which had been engineered to give light, into compartments(隔间). The work showed that an environment with a middling number of compartments promotes the most diversity.

Kitchen sponge, with all kinds of large and small holes, not only offer an ideal number of compartments for bacteria, but also provide a range of varying-sized parties that can suit more of the bacteria’s needs. In experiments with a kitchen sponge, the researchers found that the resulting bacterial community was more diverse than those produced in liquid cultures, a common method of growing bacteria in a laboratory.

Fortunately, the bacteria partying in your sponge are mostly nonpathogenic. But if dangerous bacteria do show up, the sponge’s special structure will probably help them thrive.

“Sponges are not really well-suited for kitchen,” says Markus Egert, a microbiologist, who did not take part in the study.“There is hardly any surface without bacteria at home, but the kitchen sponge is probably the most populated item at home.”

The good news is that it’s easy to solve the problem. Brushes are a much safer alternative. And if you love your sponge, don’t use it for meat juices. No need to invite bad bacteria to the party.

【1】What is the function of the first paragraph?

A.Introducing the topic of the text.

    B.Drawing a scientific conclusion.

    C.Comparing bacteria with human beings.

D.Providing a better environment for bacteria.

【2】What can be inferred from the experiment?

A.Bacteria can be removed from home.

B.Bacteria prefer to reproduce in large spaces.

C.Kitchen sponges will soon be replaced by brushes.

D.Kitchen sponges are ideal items to produce bacteria.

【3】What does the underlined word “nonpathogenic” mean in Paragraph 6?

    A.Different

    B.Safe

    C.Healthy

    D.Destructive

【4】Where is the passage most likely taken from?

    A.A cookbook

    B.A magazine

    C.A textbook

    D.An advertisement

  • 24、Tom Turcich of New Jersey became the 10th person to walk around the world. Over seven years, he walked 48,000 kilometers across six continents and 38 countries—most of it with his dog Savannah.

After a friend died in an accident at age 17, Turcich started to look at life differently, and decided to go on a journey around the world. It took over eight years of saving before Turcich finally left his home on April 2, 2015. About four months into the journey. Turcich got Savannah from an animal shelter in Texas. She joined him for the rest of the trip, becoming the first dog to walk around the world.

The pair walked around 30-40 kilometers a day, spending most nights camping. Some parts could not be done on foot, however—such as when Turcich and Savannah took a boat from Uruguay to Antarctica. In late 2017, Turcich also had to return home to recover from an illness he got while traveling through Ireland and the UK.

He and Savannah started walking again in May 2018, going through Europe, North Africa and Turkey before getting stuck in Azerbaijan for six months because of the COVID-19.

Now that he’s back home. Turcich says he wants to stay in one place for a while—and share his experience in a book.

    A.Camp with friends.

    B.Save some money.

    C.Join a tour group.

    D.Keep a pet dog.

    A.He became sick.

    B.He felt a bit tired.

    C.He needed more money.
