二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The oldest of the four bridges that rest over Venice's Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge sits proudly in the busiest part of the floating city. Visitors can enjoy its striking architecture, visit the souvenir(纪念品)stalls(货摊),and breathe in Rialto's lively atmosphere.

If you're only seeking the Rialto Bridge, it's best to avoid the crowds. The area is always busy, but early in the morning it is less busy− −or late at night when the markets are shut.

Sunset is a beautiful time to visit, with the southern side of the bridge offering a glorious view of the gondolas((凤尾船)pulling up to the grand buildings lining the canal.

The busiest time on the bridge is from mid-morning, when the day trippers arrive, to the late afternoon. The stalls are moving slowly with customers and it can get a little uncomfortable in the heat.

The Rialto markets are undoubtedly historic, with locals gathering here to shop since the 11th century. If you want to tie the markets in with your trip to the bridge, try to visit early in the morning, when you'll be able to experience the local fish and vegetable market.

The barges(驳船)start arriving at dawn, and the markets are in full swing by 8 :00. This is your best bet for an authentic market experience, as it's when the locals do their shopping and colorful, seasonal produce is plentiful. If you’re lucky, you may be offered free samples(样

    品)by the sellers.

The markets are shut on Sunday and Monday, and during the rest of the week they begin to slow down after lunch. It's never exactly quiet in the Rialto area but the earlier you arrive, the more likely you are to enjoy a bit of peace at the bridge.

If you’re there in winter, you’ll have a much quieter experience than in summer. This is when the bridge is decorated with twinkling lights and is a particularly pretty experience.

1What can visitors do when they come to the Rialto Bridge?

A.They can enjoy the impressive architecture.

B.They can see all the old buildings along the canal.

C.They can see all kinds of stalls floating on the canal.

D.They can see the whole city.

2If you just want to see the Rialto Bridge, the best time will be______.

    A.mid-morning B.when the sun sets

    C.late afternoon D.late at night

3We can know from the passage that ____.

A.a visit to the markets can help you make friends with the local people

B.the view of the Rialto Bridge at sunset is very attractive and impressive

C.customers can ask for free samples when buying produce

D.sales people of the markets take a rest at the weekends

4What do the underlined words mean in the passage?

A.Going through ups and downs. B.Moving back and forth rapidly.

C.Doing the most business. D.Getting the most stock(股票).

  • 23、Television will turn 85 years old on September 7, 2012, and it has never looked better. In its youth, television was a piece of furniture with a tiny, round screen showing unclear pictures of low-budget programs. In spite of its shortcomings, it became popular. Between 1950 and 1963, the number of American families with a television jumped from 9% to 92% of the population.

As the audience got larger, the technology got better. Television sets became more reliable through the 1960s. The reception improved. The picture improved. The major networks started broadcasting programs in color.

Even greater improvements were coming according to Sanford Brown, who wrote an article for the Post in 1967. Surprisingly, just about every prediction he made in the article became a reality. For example: All sets in the not-distant future will be color instruments. He also predicted that TV sets would become smaller, simpler, more reliable and less expensive and may forever put the TV repairman out of work. Smaller sets do not, of course, mean smaller screens. TV engineers expect screens to get much bigger. However, today’s 3-D TV is even farther away, if it’s coming at all. There is some doubt whether the public would be eager to pay for it, in view of people’s cold reception given to 3-D movies.

But the technology with the greatest potential, according to Brown, was cable television, which was still in its early stages then. As he predicted, the future of cable television was highly interactive. It wasn’t cable television that gave Americans their electronic connection to the world, however. It was the Internet. He even foresaw the future office: using picture phones, big-screen televisions for conferences, and computers providing information at the touch of a button.

Brown ever said, “The future of television is no longer a question of what we can invent. It’s a question of what we want.”

【1】What can we infer about television sets in the 1960s?

    A.They showed black-and-white pictures.

    B.The reception showed no improvement.

C.They were very popular with Americans.

D.They were out of order now and then.

【2】According to Sanford Brown, the television of the future would be ________.

    A.less expensive.

    B.more complex.

    C.cheap to repair.

    D.larger and larger.

【3】Which of the followings did Sanford Brown fail to predict?

    A.Television’s good quality.

    B.The future office’s model.

    C.The invention of 3-D TV.

    D.The potential of cable TV.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.The shortcomings of television.

    B.The development of television.

    C.The bright future of television.

    D.The invention of television.

  • 24、More than 30 students are taking part in a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center-supported program at the Norfolk County Agricultural High School this summer, learning more about green energy.

Instructor Peter Kane, of the school’s environmental science program, said Tuesday that the program is part of the center’s “Learn and Earn”plan.

“The idea was to provide a summer job for kids, as well as a chance for them to learn about clean energy, ”he said. “We re trying to encourage their study of science.”

The students were taking part in a number of clean-energy-centered projects. John Green was among those building solar-powered carts(车). The carts -which can power phones and similar things -will be given to schools as a way of showing the use of clean energy. Junior Cora Walsh showed how to use solar panels(板)to heat water going into a house, to either heat the building or create hot water for everyday use. She said she had attended a number of environmental science courses last year, and the interest excited by those led her to join the summer program.

Seniors Trinity Collette and Margot Mental were preparing to give a course to middle school teachers about climate change and green energy.“We’ll be teaching about different kinds of clean energy, like solar and wind power, “said Mental. “We’re also going to give them lesson plans.” Collette said it was a bit strange to be teaching teachers. “It is turning the tables a little bit,”she said.

Kane said the program had a number of other projects taking place as well, such as taking a field trip to Block Island to see the wind farm.Though some may think of the school as centered only on agriculture,he said, this kind of program shows the wide offerings of the school.

【1】What' s special about the program?

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The day of my big solo (独唱) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and my little brother. Uncle Scott and Auntie Tammy had even picked up my grandma from the nursing home so she wouldn’t miss the big event.

My name was on the cover of the program in bright yellow with a daisy chain drawn around it. “Cindy Hamond ... Soloist.”

I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee Swanson’s.

Renee and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was always ahead of me.

Dance-class recital needs a big finish? Renee was picked.

Selling Girl Scout cookies? “Oh, I’m sorry,” the lady at the front door would say. “I just bought twenty boxes from Renee Swanson. Such a nice girl.” Yeah, whatever.

Softball? She played first base while I watched her from my position in the outfield.

The day of the choir concert tryouts (选拔) was nerve wracking. We waited in the library while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins called my name, my whole body was shaking.

When I came back to the library, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and she calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.

Ms. Jenkins made the announcement at the end of the week of who had made the special choral group. I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said under my breath, “what else is new?”

Sudden clapping brought me out of my sulking (郁闷). Everyone was looking at me.

Ms. Jenkins looked at me and said, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me during your study halls since the solos take extra preparation.”

Solo? I got the solo? I glanced over at Renee. She grinned (露齿而笑) and gave me the thumbs-up sign.

    注意:

    1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;

When the day came, we filed onto the stage and took our places.
