  • 22、   I was enjoying this afternoon more than I had expected. Often, the tryouts for the spring musical tested the limits of my patience and nerves, with one hopeful girl after another taking turns walking onto the wooden stage, delivering an adequate but uninspired version of some Rodgers & Hammerstein number, and then being politely excused by Mrs Dominguez as the next name on the list was called.

However, this was to be my third straight year in the musical, and the confidence that my seniority afforded me around the more nervous newcomers allowed me to take pleasure in radiance of my own balance.

I had already sung my audition (试唱) song an hour ago, starting the day’s ceremonies. This year, I used “God Bless the Child”, a choice I found to be quite sophisticated since Billie Holiday’s version of it was familiar mostly to adults, and even then, mostly to adults of the previous generation. More importantly, it required a reserved performance, which I felt showcased my maturity, especially because most of the other auditioners chose songs that would show their enthusiasm, even if it meant their technical mastery would not be on full display.

Normally, the first audition was feared by most. Mrs Dominguez would ask if anyone wanted to volunteer to “get it over with”, but no one would make a sound. Then, she would call the first name off her list and the room would drop into an uncomfortably serious silence as the first student walked nervously up to the stage. I often imagined during those moments that I was witness to a death-house liver taking his march toward a quick curtain.

But not this year. I had decided to make a show of my own self-confidence by volunteering to go first. Such a fearless act, I had figured, would probably instill even more fear into my competition because they would realize that I had something they clearly lacked. Mrs. Dominguez had seemed neither surprised nor charmed by my decision to go first. Although she was annoyed by my escalating pride, I also acknowledged that I was one of the more talents actors and was probably correct in assuming myself a winner.

At this late stage of the afternoon, I felt like a queen, sitting in the back of the auditorium with my royal court of friends and admirers. They took care to sit far enough away from Mrs Dominguez that they would not be caught in the act of belittling the other students’ auditions.

To me, the endless parade of the ambitious who sang their hearts out for three minutes each were like clowns performing for my amusement. As Mrs Dominguez read another name off her list, I prepared myself for a special treat.

1What did the writer do one afternoon?

A.She enjoyed her time watching the audition.

B.She performed in the school spring musical.

C.She attended the selective trial of the school musical.

D.She helped Mrs Dominguez to select musical talents.

2The writer believed the song she chose for her audition ________.

A.would be the most inspiring Rodgers and Hammerstein numbers

B.was the most sophisticated song in Billie Holiday’s versions

C.would likely be more recognizable to her parents than to her friends

D.would allow her to more effectively showcase her enthusiasm

3The main purpose of the underlined statement in paragraph 5 is to ________.

A.offer a contrast created by the writer’s choice of audition

B.present reasons why this year’s audition was the strangest

C.suggest that the writer’s imagination no longer involved the same imagery

D.inform the reader that students’ fears of going first were something of the past

4Why did the writer volunteer to perform the first audition of the day?

A.To guarantee her a part in the play.

B.To impress and charm Mrs Dominguez.

C.To add her confidence in her performance.

D.To make the others feel they could not compete with her.

5The passage portrays the writer as ________.

A.concerned and nervous B.arrogant and indifferent

C.friendly and inclusive D.confused and surprised

  • 23、   Ian Mercer doesn’t set an alarm clock. The former Microsoft senior manager doesn’t check the weather, either. He doesn’t turn on lights, water the yard, or adjust the thermostat ( 恒温器 ). He doesn’t open the curtains, answer the phone, or call his children for dinner. There’s something unique about Ian’s home. He has programmed it to do all these things for him.

Ian doesn’t live in a typical home or have a typical lifestyle. He spent over a decade designing the systems that feature in his unique home. He bought a home automation software package and then improved it.

Now there are 79 sensors and monitors, and 48 light switches in his home. Lights turn on automatically in rooms with people in them. Even being out, Ian can also control his home remotely using voice commands or his phone in any location. That is only the beginning of what this home has been programmed to do.

It connects with online calendars, caller ID, online weather services, online address books, and email, among other things, to get Ian through his day. For example, if there is a meeting in Ian’s calendar, it will wake him up, open his bedroom curtains, start and set his shower to his desired temperature. It also informs Ian about traffic conditions.

There is plenty more this home has been programmed to do. It keeps him updated on his favourite sports teams and scores. It even monitors online activity to check that Ian’s children are doing their homework. The “dinner’s ready” command stops operation of their computers and TVs. This is easier than asking his children to shut them down.

Ian’s home is unique. Most homes are not this smart, but soon more homes will betechnologically advanced.

    【1】What makes Ian’s home unique?

    A.Having more furniture than usual.

    B.Being programmed with smart software.

C.Creating a traditional atmosphere for Ian.

    D.Working automatically without Ian’s order.

【2】What can we learn about Ian?

A.He invented the home automation software.

B.He devoted years to improving the systems.

C.He is seeking to control his home remotely.

D.He failed to monitor his children’s homework.

【3】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?

    A.Smart homes are future trends.

B.Ian’s home is far from satisfaction.

C.Technology of the smart home is too expensive.

D.Homes smarter than Ian’s can be found everywhere.

  • 24、Modern zoos aim to promote animal conservation, educate people, and support further wildlife research. Staff are devoted to providing species specific housing and appropriate diets to ensure that the animals’ lives are as natural as possible within captivity (圈养).

In fact, most zoo animals have been born and bred in captivity. They have never experienced “the wild”, which many people assume is a wonderful and safe place, despite destruction of natural habits for palm oil threats from climate change or the increase in poaching.

There are two ways capturing animals helps conserve them. Zoo conservation work can be in-situ (在原处)where money: expertise and sometimes staff are provided to protect animals and their habitats in the wild. Large, charming animals such as pandas, tigers or elephants draw the crowds. These flagship species help to raise the image and funds for in-situ conservation efforts for the not so well known species

“Ex-situ” conservation, meanwhile, takes place outside of the animals’ natural habitats, usually back at the zoo and often involving international captive breeding programs. These studbooks(良种登记册) can outline suitable genetic matches for breeding, to keep a sustainable captive population of a certain species and ensure genetic variation.

In the UK a least, zoos must have a written education strategy and an active education programme. If you have been to an accredited (官方认可的) zoo recently you will have noticed they use games and technology to go way beyond these basic requirements.

Research within zoos often looks at animal behaviour or welfare helping to ensure the animals are well housed and fed. Other research investigates the impact humans have on the zoo animals from the visitor effect to the relationships which can be formed between the animals and their keepers. Research also focuses on biological functioning of animals. Much of this is work that cannot be conducted in the wild if the animals live in remote or inhospitable areas.

Overall, zoos provide opportunities to observe and engage with exotic (外国的) animals, many of which may be threatened with extinction in the wild. Seeing them up close can cause a passion for biology, conservation and the environment.

【1】What do people think of “the wild”?

A.It poses a danger to humans.

B.It is perfect for large animals

C.It is an ideal habitat for animals.

D.It guarantees the safety of animals.

    【2】What highlights “ex-situ” conservation?

    A.Saving the conservation cost.

    B.Attracting more visitors to zoos.

    C.Keeping a species’ population stable.

D.Changing the genes of a certain species.

【3】What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?

A.How zoo keepers get along with animals.

B.How zoos can contribute to research work.

C.What researchers are expected to do in zoos.

D.Why it is difficult to carry out research in the wild.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in wring the text?

A.To show zoos ways to raise animals.

B.To stress modern zoos research value.

C.To defend zoos role in protecting animals.

D.To advise zoos to release animals into the wild.
