二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I have happy memories of trips to Europe, but my trip to Romania (罗马尼亚) was unique. When I was there as recalled, it was like being in a “James Bond” movie. My husband was born there, but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, don’t come back. When I write to you in pen, it’s safe to return.” But she never wrote in pen.

My husband lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but there was a limit in number and he was rejected. He was accepted by Canada, though, and from Calgary he jumped onto a train to San Francisco. There he stayed —illegally. He became a US citizen when we got married. By then he was a charming European with a Romanian accent and the manners of a prince.

With seven years’ experience in America, a US passport, and two children later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn’t seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was sixteen. We flew to Munich, Germany; picked up the German-made car we had purchased in the States; and drove to Romania via Austria and Hungary. When we reached Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, his family was waiting outside his sister’s house to greet us. After a long time of hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also hugged me, the American wife with two young children. They had great interest in me. Few Americans visited Romania at that time, and most Romanians had little chance to travel. I had brought an English-Romanian dictionary with me and managed to communicate, using only nouns, with no verbs. My Romanian improved, and the family’s stock of English words increased, but mostly I spoke in broken, New York-accented Romanian. The sisters loved their gifts of skirts and purses, the brothers loved the radios, and the children loved the candy. We made side trips to the Black Sea and enjoyed sightseeing in beautiful mountains. Dining at outdoor cafes to the music of violins was fantastic with fancy flavor, but nothing was as special as family dinners.

Romania didn’t have many dry cleaners. Most homes had old-fashioned washing machines but no dryers, and it was a hot summer. My husband’s relatives didn’t want to risk dirtying their clothes. Their solution was as simple as it was shocking: the women only wore their bras(胸罩) and slips (衬裙) at dinner table. The men were eating without shirts. They all had jobs, so time was precious. Having dinner without proper clothes was a small inconvenience compared with the effort of washing clothes —at least in my husband’s home, perhaps all across Romania. I, of course, having just met them, ate fully clothed. I washed my clothes by hand and hung them outdoors to dry.

On the last night of our three-week stay, we had a large family dinner. I was tired of washing my clothes. So I pulled my dress over my head and placed it on the chair behind me. All men and women applauded for my action. Even with my poor Romanian, I understood that they were saying, “She’s part of our family now.”

My children were 4 and 5 at the time, but they still have memories of that trip. They know how to say, “Good morning.” and “There are apricots (杏子) on the tree.” I can still say, “Do you speak Romanian?” and “I swim in the Black Sea.” But most of all, I remember sitting at a long dining-room table in my bra, enjoying meatballs with fresh garlic (大蒜).

    1From Para.1, we learn that ________.

    A. a trip to Europe would be dangerous

    B. the mother didn’t want to see her son

    C. Romania might be unsafe at that time

    D. the mother didn’t like to write in pen

2The writer’s husband became an American citizen through ________.

    A. experiences   B. application

    C. illegal stay   D. marriage

3What made the writer feel special about the family dinner in Romania?

    A. The way people dressed .

    B. The way people spoke.

    C. The fantastic violin music.

    D. The fancy food flavor.

4The writer was completely accepted by her husband’s family when ________.

    A. she offered gifts to the whole family

    B. she spoke her husband’s language

    C. she washed all the clothes by hand

    D. she had dinner in bra like other ladies

5The writer shared her story to say ________.

    A. “East or west, home is the best”

    B. “When in Rome do as the Romans do”

    C. “Marry a dog and follow the dog forever”

    D. “The course of true love never runs smooth”

  • 22、Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed (认定) that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame (瘸的) throughout his life.

But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist (腰部) down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.

He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.

In February 1934, in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run—this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile.

A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one’s self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.

【1】What was the doctor’s opinion about Glenn?

A.Glenn was able to walk with his own great effort.

B.Great determination could make a difference to Glenn.

C.Glenn could live a normal life with the upper half of his body.

D.There was few chance that Glenn could survive.

【2】The underlined word “unaided” means ________

    A.without help

    B.for himself

    C.with disability

    D.without hesitation

【3】What do we know about Glenn?

A.Glenn took recovery exercise in hospital.

B.Glenn won the first place in Marathon.

C.Glenn inspired people with his moving story.

D.Glenn organized a track team in college.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Keep healthy

    B.Go after dreams

    C.Stand up after failure

    D.Catch every chance

  • 23、It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and social circle, but what about that happening in the middle of the night? The Journal of Youth Studies recently published new research showing that one in five teens from 12 to 15 regularly wake to spend all night on social media (社会媒体). Not surprisingly, the research also showed that these social night owls were three times more likely than others to feel tired at school and that girls were more likely than boys to be called to office.

The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the brain to stay awake, so it's easy to see why a teen might be up all night. A study in Psychological Science showed the same brain reaction: when teens saw large numbers of “likes” on their posts, they stayed awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or won money. Besides not catching up on sleep and interrupting their sleep cycle, teens may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain development and learning.

Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with some electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner rather than later.

“Providing access (使用机会) to social media is a favor that children can earn and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats sleep disorders (紊乱), reminds parents, “The bad effect is clear. So teens and parents should discuss and agree on its use, timing and access. When teenagers agree to the rules, it’s easier for parents to control how much time they use the phones or computers.”

【1】What does the underlined part “night owls” in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.Girls often called to office.

B.Teens who stay up late on social media.

C.Teens who are busy with their homework at night.

D.Boys regularly waking in the middle of the night.

【2】How do teens react when seeing many “likes” on their posts according to the study?

A.They are too excited to go to sleep.

B.They fall asleep easily and happily.

C.They are too excited to go to school.

D.They decide to make more good friends.

【3】What suggestion does Janie Feldman give to parents?

A.Making rules about media access together with their children.

B.Getting their children to do homework through computers.

C.Encouraging their children to stay connected with online friends.

D.Stopping their children from using cell phones.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Deep sleep makes a big difference to brain development.

B.Kids are trying to win back the trust of their parents.

C.Social media may have a bad effect on all kinds of people.

D.Social media may cause teens’ sleep disorders.

  • 24、“Your password has expired,” a message said on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn’t seem like a big deal, unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, the whole password can’t be fewer than eight characters. And I can’t use any of the same passwords I’ve used in the past three months.

Suddenly I was very angry. What didn’t make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. Disbelief about what she had done to me was all I thought about. Every day.

I remembered a tip I’d heard from my former boss. He’d said: “I’m going to use a password to change my life.” I couldn’t focus on getting things done in my current mood. There were clear signs of what I needed to do to get control of my life again.

My password became the sign. My password reminded me that I shouldn’t let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it.

I made my password Forgive@h3r. I had to type this several times a day. The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened and find a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt a slow healing begin to happen. By the time my server asked me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.

One month later, my dear Exchange server asked me yet again to reset my password. I thought about the next thing that I had to get done. My password became Quit@smoking4ever. I quit smoking overnight. This password was a painful one to type during that month, but doing it helped me to yell at myself in my mind as I typed that statement. It motivated me to follow my monthly goal. One month later, my password became Save4trip@thailand. Guess where I went three months later: Thailand.

Seeing how these reminders helped to achieve my goals kept me motivated and excited. While it’s something difficult to come up with your next goal, keeping at it brings great results.

【1】What does the word “expired” underlined in the 1st paragraph refer to?

    A.been renewed

    B.changed

    C.been mistaken

    D.become due

【2】Which of the following passwords meets the author’s company’s requirements?

    A.buy@1ticket

    B.See@h3r

    C.Course4$Saving

    D.Dream4future

【3】What can be inferred about the author according to the text?

A.He finally recovered well from his divorce.

B.He started smoking to heal his broken heart.

C.He saved enough money to have 4 trips in Thailand.

D.He was always angry about his company’s requirements for passwords.

【4】What would be the best title of the text?

A.Never to be a victim of others’ faults

B.To motivate yourself by setting your goals

C.How to come up with a new password

D.A new way of dealing with my depression
