  • 22、Abreu practices Franklin’s famous saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” Throughout his four years at Kellenberg MemorialHigh School in the US, Abreu made community service an important part of his life. “I don’t know where he finds the time to do everything,” said Erin Ronan, Abreu’s math teacher. “He’s truly a class act.”

As an honored student, Abreu, 18, took part in different voluntary activities after school, during weekends and summer holidays. These included helping staff at the public library, doing landscape work at Kellenberg, and serving customers at a local restaurant. Faced with a limited number of hours in a day, Abreu left his library job last summer to start working as an emergency medical technician — a role that fits his passion for making a difference in other people’s lives. “My appreciation for service has guided me into giving back, ” said Abreu, who is setting his sights on becoming a doctor. “It’s such a rewarding feeling to help someone.”

During his three years at high school, Abreu devoted between 40 and 50 hours of his time each year to volunteer work —more than double the school’s annual requirement of 20 hours. For all his hard work, Abreu was welcomed into a leadership club that organizes fellow students’ volunteer activities.

Abreu thanked his parents for inspiring him to do the right thing, saying they are “the most selfless people I know.” He remembered when he was about 6 years old, his mother invited a disadvantaged neighborhood boy to have dinner. Upon observing the boy’s happiness, Abreu came away with a sense of how he wanted to live his own life — “I won’t focus on my own desires. I’ll help as many people as I can,” he said.

  • 23、Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12.600 are injured in home fires just in the United States, with direct property(财产) loss because of home fires at about $7.3 billion every year. Every day Americans experience the horror of fires, but most people don't understand fires.

To protect yourself, it is important to learn something about home fires.

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be in flames. Most deadly fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you realize a fire, you won’t have time to take valuables because the fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. The fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you tired and sleepy, and short of breath. The smoke can cause you to be a deep sleeper before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape.

Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Breathing in this super-hot air will burn your lungs. It can melt clothes to your skin. In five minutes, a room can get so hot that everything in it starts to bum at once.

Fires are bright at first, but quickly produce black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, confused about where you are or which direction you should go and unable to find your way around the home you’ve lived in for years.

Only when we know the true nature of fires can we prepare our families and ourselves.

  • 24、Paying off student loans (贷款) can be challenging and stressful. It may mean starting out one’s life with debt. This is exactly what college basketball star Anthony Leal did not want for his beloved sister.

Anthony Leal, smart and athletic, is a business major at Indiana University and plays as a point guard for the Indiana Hoosiers. When he found out that his sister had a huge amount to pay in student loans, he thought of taking advantage of the benefits he could get from playing basketball. In 2021, NCAA allowed college athletes like Leal to earn promotional money through photograph signing, social media interactions, advertising campaigns, and even teaching camps and lessons. Thanks to it, Leal was able to save money and helped take off the burden on his sister’s shoulders.

On Christmas day, he surprised his sister Lauren by letting her know what he’s been up to in the past two years. Lauren was very emotional after reading her brother’s heartwarming note. “There is no doubt that I have made it to where I am today because of you,” Leal wrote. “Someone like you deserves no burdens or restrictions in life, and I feel that the best way to help with that is by paying off your student loan debt.” Besides looking back on several precious moments in their childhood, Leal also mentioned in the note that he didn’t expect his sister to pay back the money. Instead, he hoped she would pay it forward.

Lauren was grateful for her brother’s huge efforts to pay off her student loans. “After those things were done, I was going to sit down and get a settled plan,” said Lauren. “I can go full steam ahead in my future and what I want to accomplish, what I want to do, without having that just weighing me down and holding me back. So it’s just incredible,” she said.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Catherine Svilicic never would have guessed her adopted rescue clog Khan would act out with aggression (攻击性) towards her young 17-month-old baby, Charlotte!

The day began with the usual playtime outside. Although baby Charlotte had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Charlotte and the new dog had been making a habit of playing like this. However, things were different that day. Catherine watched as Khan threw her baby across their backyard! Why was Khan acting as though a lovely child was a threat? Catherine watched him drag her child, hoping he would stop. Sadly, it seemed Catherine needed to immediately intervene because this was only the beginning. He tightly clenched his jaws (咬紧牙关) into her diaper (纸尿裤) to throw her back and forth. This is when things got out of hand. Certainly, Catherine was angry with Khan for throwing her girl. However, something deep down told Catherine there was more to this than what they were seeing. Little did she know, these doubts would turn out to be true.

But her baby was still in great danger. Catherine noted that her baby seemed a target. That moment we mentioned when the dog sunk his teeth into Charlotte’s diaper and used his strength to throw her baby like “a doll”. How terrifying! Luckily, those teeth did not go near her skin and especially face and the baby was actually quite calm. Perhaps, the baby understood something about Khan’s intentions.

Catherine knew that she needed to act fast and catch her poor child. Something happening to Khan next that confused the whole family.

While the baby stayed calm, others could not help but panic. Charlotte’s mother said, “Had I not seen it with my very own eyes, I’d never have believed it.” Therefore, she ran to Charlotte and carried her to safety.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

While Catherine brought her baby to shelter, Khan barked madly and then fell down.
