二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Brownrigg is a London tour guide and leads walks through the capital all summer long, whatever the weather. His dozen or so routes range in topics from Harry Potter to the London Underground, but all have something in common. “I often end up talking about the weather,” he says. “It’s a national obsession (痴迷). I realised how much it has shaped London’s existence and history.”

Brownrigg’s Discovering Britain walk takes in several of the city’s famous landmarks, from the Tower of London lo the Shard, each stop exploring some of London’s extraordinary weather events.

We begin at the Monument Christopher Wren’s elegy to the Great Fire of London. With its pale stone column topped by a golden orb. the Monument was designed to look like a giant candle. It stands 202ft high, exactly 202ft away from where the lire began in Pudding Lane. Despite its size, the structure is dwarfed by (相形见绌) today’s surrounding tower blocks. Similarly, the causes behind the fire are sometimes overlooked. The Great Fire was a significant event in the City of London’s history, one that was shaped by the capitals geography. The spark was the weather.

As we enjoy some autumn sun beside the Monument, Brownrigg explains: “The summer of 1666 was unusually warm. At that time London was crammed (塞满) with wooden buildings, many only a few feet apart. A long, hot summer left them bone dry. Add stores of flammable materials including gunpowder left over from the Civil War and the city was a giant tinderbox.” It caught a light on 2 September when a bakery oven wasn’t cleaned properly. The inferno (特大火) lasted three days thanks to a strong breeze. Besides fanning the flames, the wind caused more mess by changing direction.

【4】What can be inferred mainly from Brownrigg’s words in the last paragraph?

A.Showing the materials of the buildings.

B.Expressing the cause of the Great Fire.

C.Predicting the change of the weather.

  • 22、   China will have the most 5G connections of any nation by 2025, according to a new study, while Europe will fall behind Korea, the United States and Japan in terms of 5G penetration (渗透) by that year.

5G is the fifth generation of network technology. It is expected to bring unbelievable speeds to Internet users, with some operations running 10 times faster than on 4G network. 5G is also expected to unlock potential in a lot of new services, including artificial intelligence, science of robots, self-driving cars, and the Internet of things.

The GSMA said that China’s three major mobile operators—China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom—are already moving ahead with 5G works. While most nations will have 5G by updating existing foundations, the study noted that China plans to build part of its 5G networks.

One of the major distinguishing factors between Chinese mobile operators and those in the rest of the world is the intention to erect the new and independent 5G networks. That is, China is determined to build a completely advanced 5G. The high cost underlines China’s seriousness about paying whatever it takes.

Korea will lead the world in terms of 5G penetration in 2025, when 66 percent of the nations’ total connections will be 5G, according to GSMA. This compares to 50 percent in the US, 49 percent in Japan, 36 percent in China, 30 percent in Europe, and a global average of 18 percent. Out of the five economies leading on 5G, Europe will have the lowest participation in 2025, as the area is moving more slowly in having its 5G networks.

1What is the future of 5G in China?

A.It will develop rapidly. B.It may be lack of financial support.

C.It will move forward slowly. D.It may fall behind Europe.

2Which of the following best explains “erect” underlined in paragraph 4?

    A.Bring up. B.Set up.

    C.Turn up. D.Pick up.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A.Some Chinese will use 5G in 2025.

    B.Koreans cannot possess 5G in 2025.

C.Only five countries will have 5G in 2025.

D.Europe will pay little attention to 5G in 2025.

  • 23、The Mars 2020 rover, which will set off for the Red Planet this year, will not only search for traces of ancient life, but pave the way for future human missions, NASA’s scientists said on Friday as they introduced the vehicle.

The rover has been constructed in a large, sterile room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, near Los Angeles, where its driving equipment was given its first successful test last week.

Shown to invited journalists on Friday, it is scheduled to leave Earth in July 2020 from Florida’s Cape Canaveral, becoming the fifth US rover to land on Mars seven months later in February.

“It’s designed to seek the signs of life, so we’re carrying a number of different instruments that will help us understand the geological and chemical situations on the surface of Mars,” deputy mission leader Matt Wallace told AFP.

Among the devices aboard the rover are 23 cameras, two “ears” that will allow it to listen to Martian winds, and lasers used for chemical analysis.

Approximately the size of a car, the rover is equipped with six wheels like the former US rover, Curiosity, allowing it to travel along rocky land.

Speed is not a priority for the vehicle, which merely has to cover around 200 yards (about 180 metres) per Martian day—approximately the same as a day on Earth.

Fueled by a tiny nuclear reactor, it has seven-foot-long (about 2 metres) articulated arms and a drill to crack open rock samples in locations scientists identify as potentially suitable for life.

We are hoping to move fairly quickly. We’d like to see the next mission launched in 2026 where the rover will get to Mars, pick up the samples, put them into a rocket and finally bring them back to the Earth, said Wallace. NASA’s Mars 2020 rover will remain active for at least one Martian year, which is around two years on Earth.

【1】What does the underlined part “pave the way” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Make preparations.

    B.Find suitable landing sites.

    C.Set up research centers.

    D.Construct roads.

【2】What can we know about the Mars 2020 rover?

A.It looks much like a car with six wheels.

B.It is an updated version of the US rover Curiosity.

C.It is solar-powered and can crack open rock samples.

D.It is able to perform different tasks on Mars in search of the signs of life.

【3】If you search for the passage on the website of China Daily, where can you probably find it?

    A.Lifestyle.

    B.Region.

    C.World.

    D.Culture.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The Mars 2020 rover has successfully passed its first test.

B.NASA is planning a new round of space exploration.

C.Future human missions on Mars are on the way.

D.A new rover will be launched to carry out scientific research on Mars.

  • 24、WHAT are scientists? They are often described as grey-haired white-coated dull scholars.

But the world has changed. Young scientists are making their voices heard and releasing their powers on the world stage.

This is also true in China. Rising stars include new materials expert Gong Yongji, university professor Liu Mingzhen, and biologist Wan Ruixue.

At the age of 28 in 2018, Wan Ruixue received the 2018 Science; & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. This is a global prize to reward outstanding scientists at an early stage of their careers.

She focuses mainly on Biomedicine and Molecular Biology (分子生物学) . "Both are cutting-edge (尖端的) technologies at an early stage of development, "she said.

"So, I think they have great potential to be developed. I think in the study of cutting-edge technologies, China and other leading countries in the world are standing at the same starting line. And in the study of Structural Biology, China is likely to become the leader."

She felt it was her fate to become a biologist. "I grew interested in the natural world when I was very young, " she said. In 2009, she entered Sun Yat-sen University.

In her third year at university, she realized that she wanted to do something related to biomedicine. So she e-mailed China's top biologist Shi Yigong, hoping to join his lab at Tsinghua University.

Shi recognized her talent and welcomed her. Years of efforts at the lab have paid off. Her research on the high-definition 3-D structure of spliceosome led to a scientific breakthrough.

Unlike many of other young scientists who choose to pursue further study abroad, Wan currently has no plan to go overseas.

"The whole ecosystem for scientific research is continually improving in China," she said, adding that the country has great science facilities.

【1】What does Wan Ruixue feel about the study of cutting-edge technologies in China?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Confident.

    C.Disappointed.

    D.Satisfied.

【2】What can we learn about Wan Ruixue's journey of becoming a biologist?

A.Her teacher led her into the field.

B.She finds it's easier than she thought.

    C.Her contribution has been recognized.

D.She thinks it's boring but worth trying.

【3】Which can be the best title of the text?

    A.China's Breakthrough in Science

    B.Rising Young Scientists in China

    C.Successful Chinese Scientists

    D.New Image of Chinese Scientists
