二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Over eight million acres of land in the US were scorched in 2020. We've lost more trees faster than nature or humans can regenerate. So we've got to have better tools to be able to reforest faster.

A Seattle—based company called DroneSeed thinks that tool could be, as its name suggests, automated seed dropping drones, which means multiple drones operating to perform a task at the same time.

Typically, reintroducing tree growth is a slow, manual process that can take up to three years. It requires growing young trees in a nursery that tree planters plant by hand. And they're using a shovel and they burn the caloric equivalent of running two marathons every day. But automated drones can cover a lot more ground and get the job done faster.

Grant Canary, DroneSeed CEO, says in groups of five, the drones can cover up to 50 acres in a day compared to about two acres by human. And he says the speed and automation can save landowners 30 to 50 percent of their reforestation costs. Eight- foot- long drones take off on pre-programmed routes carrying loads of nearly 60 pounds. They zip up and down those mountainsides, distribute seed vessels in very targeted, precise locations and make reforestation workable. But they don't drop raw seeds. Instead, Drone Seed has developed seed vessels that include a patent mixture of every thing a seed needs to survive, like fertilizers, nutrients and natural pest deterrents.

Unlike seedlings, they don't need to be buried in the ground. The vessel is a dry fiber so it absorbs moisture, soaking up and expanding so that helps it avoid drying out, which is one of the biggest causes of seed mortality.

Aerial seeding is not a new idea. But historically, raw seeds are dropped and can land in poor soil. So Drone Seed uses advanced laser mapping to identify the best locations for their seed drops, targeting healthy soil and other ideal conditions. Those are the areas that are not gravel. They don't have high competitive vegetation and so the seeds themselves are going to grow better.

【1】What's the fourth paragraph mainly about?

    A.The cost-reduction of planting trees.

    B.The importance of reforestation.

C.The disadvantages of artificial tree planting.

D.The advantages of planting trees by drones.

【2】What's the function of vessels dropped by drones?

A.To serve as nurseries for seedlings to grow healthily.

B.To prevent the young trees from rolling down hill sides.

C.To keep the seedlings from being damaged when landing.

D.To help the drones determine locations of delivery accurately.

【3】What can we expect of DroneSeed in the future?

    A.Drones will completely replace humans.

    B.They will speed up reforestation.

C.The diversity of forest species will increase.

D.Forest fires will be greatly reduced.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Artificial planting, slow but effective.

    B.Aerial seeding, new and workable.

    C.Drone seeding, productive and promising.

    D.Forests resources, significant but fragile.

  • 22、   Happy Birthday, Thorstein Veblen, who invented the expression “conspicuous( 炫耀性) consumption ”.

Why do we buy? What drives us to get things we know we don’t need and that we know are bad for the planet? Thorstein Veblen, born on July 30th, 1857, discussed this in his 1899 book The Theory of the Leisure Class, where he first wrote about conspicuous consumption.

According to a website named Conspicuous Consumption, the term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to show off their wealth and income rather than cover their real needs. Such a consumer shows such behavior to enjoy or achieve higher social status. The result, according to Veblen, is a society characterized by wasted time and money.

There is also a type of goods called “Veblen goods”, which really exist only to show the status of the person buying them. Rolls-Royce or fancy supercars are a good example; a Lamborghini won’t get you anywhere faster in a world with speed limits. A Patek-Philippe watch doesn’t keep time as accurately as a Timex.

Conspicuous consumption can lead to conspicuous waste —the ability to just throw things away and buy replacements even when they work perfectly well. Through “conspicuous consumption” often came “conspicuous waste”, which Veblen hated. Much of modern advertising is built upon a Veblenian idea of consumption and competition.

Veblen also explains why poor people won’t fight against conspicuous consumption. The poor, and all those persons who concentrate on the struggle to make a living, are conservative because they cannot afford the effort of taking thought for the day after tomorrow.

Some of Veblen’s theories wouldn’t find a place in today’s USA, but you must be impressed by his most famous saying: Invention is the mother of necessity.

    Happy 163rd Birthday, Thorstein Veblen!

1What is conspicuous consumption usually connected with?

    A.Social position. B.People’s needs. C.Economic growth. D.Market demand.

2What might the poor think of conspicuous consumption?

A.It is a traditional practice. B.It is none of their business.

C.It promotes consumption. D.It is a goal they try to achieve.

3What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To challenge Veblen’s theories. B.In defense of some economics terms.

C.In honor of a famous economist. D.To prevent conspicuous consumption.

  • 23、   For the most part, American children aren’t great at math. But Chinese children tend to be excellent. It’s consistently found Chinese students at the top of the academic pile and Americans much nearer the bottom.

In Lenora Chu’s book “Little Soldiers: An American Boy, a Chinese School”, she begins to reveal the cultural differences that lead to this gap. The differences she notices in children’s focus and discipline are dramatic, but she also notices cultural differences that influence how Chinese schools are run, and the reason why its students test so well. Along with factors such as highly trained teachers and an emphasis on memorizing before pursuing deeper understanding, the difference comes down to a belief that has begun slowly making its way across the US: achievement is the result of hard work, not natural ability.

This approach comes from a firm belief that anything is possible with hard work, with chiku, or “eating bitter”. Studies show that for kids who score poorly. Chinese teachers believe a lack of effort—rather than of smarts — is to blame.

Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, author of “Mindset (心态)”, is responsible for making up the terms “growth mindset” and “fixed mindset”. Chinese students are trained to have a growth mindset: if they aren’t doing well, they’11 work harder, and they’ll be successful. American children tend to be trained to have a fixed mindset about academics: their abilities are largely predetermined and static. If they aren’t doing well, it’s because they’re not good at it.

In America students are told that learning is fun and easy. But real learning is actually very difficult and takes suffering and anxiety. If you’re not willing to go through that you’re not going to learn deeply. The downside is these students often give up when something gets hard or when it’s no longer fun.

1According to Lenora Chu, what contributes most to the Chinese students’excellent academic performance?

A.School operation model. B.The emphasis on memorizing.

    C.High-qualified teachers. D.Chinese culture.

2According to Chinese teachers, students failing an exam are______.

    A.lazy B.slow

    C.unfocused D.foolish

3Which of the following is TRUE according to Carol Dweck’s theory?

A.A majority of Chinese students are born excellent learners.

B.American students tend to believe learning ability is genetically determined.

C.Amerlcan students should choose a Chinese school to achieve success.

D.American students are lacking in a fixed mindset, compared to Chinese students.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Students should study in a fun way.

B.American students are always anxious about their study.

C.American students have no difficulty in learning deeply.

D.Diligence plays an essential part in learning.

  • 24、   In the past year I have lost two of the people I loved most. One was my little sister, the other a best friend of 30 years. I miss them. They are still in my heart, and there they’ll remain.

Sadly, when I moved to another city eight years ago, I didn't get to see them as much as I wanted to. Something always seemed to get in my way-work, my dogs and, yes, the money to fly up for regular visits. I was too late to whisper in their car what they meant to me and to thank them for the joy they gave me. And this is something I regret. But instead of beating myself up, I’d rather learn from this hardest of lessons.

I’ve determined to put those I love before everything from now on-to make keeping in contact a priority (优先)and to enjoy time with them while they are here. In fact, I have decided I am going to take something positive from their loss and enjoy everything more. To not put anything off I can do straight away. To enjoy everything I own. Why? It’s as John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.”

After the funerals(葬礼)of my darlings, I watched as their families dealt with what to do with their possessions. It reminded me of sorting out my mother's things following her death, and the sadness that brought me.

I’ve given up trying to “get ahead” in life; now my priority is myself and the people and things that make me happy. And so, this week I will go to Italy to watch my favorite show-a joyous event that I won’t be able to enjoy “some day in the future”. And all those pretty dresses I don’t wear because they cost too much to clean will be worn.

And I am going to remind those I love that this is the case, not just in writing but face to face and as often as I can. Because leaving anything for later is taking the risk that later may never arrive.

1What lesson did the author learn from the death of her loved ones?

A.It’s painful to lose those we love.

B.We should be prepared for tragedies in life.

C.We should enjoy the moment with loved ones.

D.Love does not fade with the loss of those we love.

2What does the underline phrase “beating myself up” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Punishing myself heavily out of regret B.Blaming myself for what happened.

C.Beating myself severely. D.Making an exaggerated show of regret.

3The author would do the followings EXCEPT

A.caring about her family and friends.

B.attending a close friend’s wedding no matter how much the flight ticket costs.

C.working on weekends instead of going to the show she wants to watch.

D.wearing beautiful clothes which should be dry-cleaned.
