二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Good manners are always good manners. That’s what I thought until I married Alexander, who is Russian.

When I first met Alexander and he said to me in Russian, “Nalei mnye chai—pour me some tea”, I got angry and answered, “Pour it yourself.” Translated into English, without a “Could you..?” or a “please”, it sounded really rude to me. But in Russian it was fine—you don’t have to add any polite words.

However, when I took Alexander home to meet my parents in the UK, I had to give him a good lesson about pleases and thank you (which he thought were completely unnecessary), and to teach him to say sorry if someone happened to step on his toes, and to smile, smile, smile.

Another thing that Alexander just couldn’t understand was why people say things like “Would you mind passing me the salt, please?” He said, “It’s only the salt, for God’s sake! What do you say in English if you want a real favour?”

He also watched in amazement when, at a dinner party in England, we swallowed some really disgusting food and I said, “Mmmm...delicious.” In Russia, people are much more direct. The first time Alexander’s mother came to our house for dinner in Moscow, she told me that my soup needed more flavouring. Afterwards, when we argued about it, my husband said, “Do you prefer your dinner guests to lie?”

Alexander complained that in England he felt like an idiot because in Russia if you smile all the time people think you are mad. In fact, this is exactly what my husband’s friends thought of me the first time I went to Russia because I smiled at everyone, and always said “please” and “thank you” in Russian.

At home we now have an agreement. If we’re speaking Russian, he can say “Pour me some tea”, and just make a noise like a grunt (咕哝声) when I give it to him. But when we’re speaking English, he has to add a “please”, a “thank you”, and a smile.

【1】What can we know from what Alexander said?

A.He didn’t think politeness was necessary.

    B.He didn’t like the writer’s politeness.

C.He wasn’t used to the English politeness.

D.He wasn’t willing to have good manners.

【2】What did Alexander’s friends think of the author when they first met her?

    A.She was noble.

    B.She was strange.

    C.She was lovely.

    D.She was impolite.

【3】What can we tell from their agreement?

    A.They respect each other.

B.They change a lot for each other.

    C.They learn from each other.

D.They fail to fit in with each other.

【4】What topic is the text mainly about?

    A.Good manners.

    B.Human relations.

    C.Culture shock.

    D.Mixed marriages.

  • 22、Over a four-year period, Swiss researchers have developed a machine that can keep human livers (肝)alive outside of the body for one week.

Livers are among the most commonly transplanted (移植)human organs. Current technology can only keep human livers alive for up to 24 hours. It is reported that, in 2017, about 8.000 liver transplants were performed in the U.S., of which 360 used livers from living givers In addition, about 11,500 people were registered on a waiting list to receive a liver transplant. Keeping livers alive and functioning for longer periods could greatly improve the chances of survival for patients.

The researchers say the purpose of their “Liver4Life” machine is to perform what they call liver perfusion (灌注)operations outside of the human body. Perfusion is the process by which blood or other liquids are pumped through organs and tissue. The machine keeps the liver at the right temperature and moves it in a way that would be natural in the body. Using a pump to fill the liver with blood acting like a human heart, the machine also provides oxygen to the organ, controls red blood cell levels and removes waste.

The research team began their experiments with livers from pigs. After repeated testing and engineering development, they succeeded in getting the pig livers to survive for seven days with support only provided from the Liver4Life machine. They also discovered the system can work to repair damaged livers. The team is now planning its next step to transplant machine-treated organs into patients.

Pierre-Alain Clavien. leader of the research said in a statement. “This technology will greatly increase the number of livers available for transplant, improving the chances of survival for patients. The success of this unique machine opens the way for many new applications in transplantation and cancer medicine.”

【1】What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?

A.Introduce a brand new topic for discussion.

B.Provide some latest data about present liver transplants.

C.Show the urgency of tech improvement in liver transplants.

D.Remind readers concerned of the importance of a healthy liver.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.The machine.

    B.The liver.

    C.The temperature.

    D.The tissue.

【3】What can we learn about the Liver4Life machine?

A.It is among the most commonly used machines for liver transplants.

B.It is aimed to carry out liver perfusion operations in the human body.

C.It can perform several functions to keep the liver working normally.

D.It can be used to keep the pig livers alive for more than one week.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

  • 23、   This summer, most Chinese citizens have been amazed by women wearing hanfu, or Han-style clothing, at subway stations, shopping malls, pedestrian streets or scenic areas. Hanfu has aroused a public attention in recent years, especially among young people.

In 2018, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CCCYL) set the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar, traditionally the birthday of the Chinese people’s mythological (神话的) ancestor the Yellow Emperor, as the annual Traditional Chinese Garment (服装) Day. It was aimed to promote classic Chinese culture, as well as “demonstrating cultural confidence”. Since then, the beauty of hanfu has gained more and more recognition and acceptance by common people.

Generally, hanfu refers to traditional Chinese garments worn by the Han nationality before the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Historically, Han Chinese clothing has also influenced some of its neighboring cultural costumes, including the Japanese kimono, Korean hanbok, and clothing of Mongolia, Vietnam and Bhutan.

Hanfu appears elegant and beautiful, not only due to the thousands of years of culture behind its design. This traditional dress also stands out because of its remarkable craftsmanship, from fabric to decoration. Hanfu adopts more than 30 examples of Chinas invisible cultural heritage as well as Chinese arts and crafts under preservation.

Hanfu represents not only appreciation of the beauty, but also a continuation of traditional Chinese culture. Nowadays, more and more fashion designers look to hanfu for inspiration, producing fashionable examples of hanfu for a new era (纪元).

1Why did CCCYL set the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar as the annual Traditional Chinese Garment Day?

    A.To help design hanfu.

    B.To promote China economy.

C.To remember the birth of the Yellow Emperor.

D.To encourage more people to know about classic Chinese culture.

2Which countries cultural costumes have been influenced by Han Chinese clothing?

A.Japanese and Russian. B.Russian and British

C.Korean and Vietnamese. D.Mongolian and American.

3What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The rich culture of hanfu. B.The reasons for the beauty of hanfu.

C.The worldwide influence of hanfu. D.The popularity of hanfu among young people.

4Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary. B.A newspaper.

    C.A novel. D.A guidebook.

Older couples in a bad marriage -- particularly female spouses -- have a higher risk for heart

disease than those in a good marriage, finds the first nationally representative study of its kind. The findings suggest the need for marriage counseling(咨询) and programs aimed at promoting marital quality and well-being for couples into their 70s and 80s, said lead investigator Hui Liu, a Michigan State University sociologist.

"Marriage counseling is focused largely on younger couples," said Liu.  "But these results show that marital quality is just as important at older ages, even when the couple has been married 40 0r 50 years. "

The study, funded by the National Institute of Aging, an arm of the National Institutes of Health,is published online in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.

Liu analyzed five years of data from about 1,200 married men and women who participated the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project.  Respondents were aged 57-85 at the beginning of the study.

The project included survey questions about marital quality, lab tests and self-reported measures of cardiovascular health such as heart attacks, strokes, hypertension and high levels of C-reactive protein in the blood.

Liu set out to learn how marital quality is related to risk of heart disease over time, and whether this relationship varies by gender and/or age. Among her findings: Negative martial quality(eg.spouse criticizes, spouse is demanding) has a bigger effect on heart health than positive marital quality. In other words, a bad marriage is more harmful to your heart health than a good marriage. The effect of marital quality on cardiovascular risk becomes much stronger at older ages.Meanwhile, marital quality has a bigger effect on women's heart health than it does on men's, possibly because women tend to internalize(使藏在心底) negative feelings and thus are more likely to feel depressed and develop cardiovascular problems. Heart disease leads to a decline in marital quality for women, but not for men.  It's common that wives are more likely to provide support and care to sick husbands, while husbands are less likely to take care of sick wives."In this way, a wife's poor health may affect how she assesses her marital quality, but a husband's poor health doesn't hurt his

    view of marriage,"Liu said.

    1The study suggests that

A.elderly couples are less likely to be affected by marital quality

B.the effect of marital quality on male and female is the same

C.bad martial quality affects heart health more greatly

D.marital quality has a positive effect on health

2We can infer from the the last paragraph that Liu agrees that

A.marital quality has nothing to do with cardiovascular health

B.gender or age may affect one's marriage quality

C.marriage counseling is unnecessary for young couples

D.husbands will not take care of their sick wives

4Why does marital quality have a bigger effect on women?

    A.Because women are weak physically.

B.Because women have to take care of their sick husband.

C.Because women tend to keep their negative feelings to themselves.

D.Because women expect too much oftheir marriage.

5According to the passage, who is most likefy to have a heart disease?

    A.Marie, 40 years old,just got divorced.

B.Bill, 66 years old, lives with his wife and grandchildren.

C.Justin, 28 years old, got married recently.

D.Sophia, 59 years old, often quarrels with her husband.

Once, they decided to take a three-day trip to a nearby small town which was famous for its historical_sites. They decided to take a road trip in their own car. They started on their journey early in the morning and by late evening, they had entered the town and checked in at a hotel.

Next morning, after breakfast, they took a road map of the town and its suburbs and started on their new_discovery. Since there were many places to see, it took them the whole day to finish their sightseeing.

By now, they had reached a suburb which had shops selling handmade items. My_sister was most interested in shopping. Her husband warned her to finish before it started getting dark. They were so lost in their shopping that they forgot about the time and started back only as the shops began to close.

They took the same route  back to their hotel but somehow got lost on the way and realized that they were going around in a circle. They stopped the car to consult their map and then started again. After sometime, they realized it was no use to try and find their way back. They decided to ask someone for help but no one was out at that late hour.

They waited at a street corner for some time, and then decided to try again. My brotherinlaw started the car but it couldn’t move. He got down and checked but could not find any fault.
