  • 21、   The Moringa tree (辣木树), or Drumstick tree, grows to between three and ten meters tall. Its flowers are cream-colored. The plant has long and round green pods (豆荚) that can grow to 30 cm. The plant is very common in South and Southeast Asia, Africa and America. Although the tree is relatively unknown in China, it is extremely useful.

The leaves are used for eye and ear diseases, fevers, etc. They are also held against the forehead to reduce headaches, or made into tea to treat stomach problems. As they contain a lot of iron, they have been used for the treatment of anemia (贫血), a medical condition in which there are too few red cells in the blood, causing tiredness.

The seeds (种子) are commonly used to treat certain skin diseases. Ground seeds can be mixed with salt or oil to apply to the body to treat backache. The oil from the seeds is also used as a hair treatment, and to keep mosquitoes away and treat their bites.

The roots function in exactly the same way as the seeds. They have additional uses for heart and circulation problems. The plant contains high levels of fiber and protein, so it is planted mainly to feed farm animals and human beings. The leaves are eaten fresh or cooked.

Like every other part of the tree, its flowers are not just decorative but also functional. They taste a bit like wild mushrooms and are considered a delicious food. They are used to make tea to treat the common cold and mixed with honey to make cough medicine.

  • 22、In 2010, my mother-in-law gave me her rather simple but graceful, antique “secretary desk”. The desk easily fit into the tiny room at the top of the stairs. I felt so secure, and confident when I sat down and began each writing session. Despite the desk’s appeal, its limited storage capacity meant that I often put file folders and books on the small floor space around me. After each writing session, I painstakingly gathered the tools of the trade and placed them on a nearby shelf until the next session.

A few years into my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I acquired my own office. My husband, Bill offered on more than one occasion to buy me a new desk for my office, but I ignored his offer.

One day, we stopped at the local office supply store. Bill found what he thought was the perfect desk for me. “I want to buy this for you, sweetie. My writer needs a bigger desk. ”He hugged me.

“Thanks, but I don’t want a bigger desk!” I said.

“Why don’t you want a bigger desk?” he said. “You must be afraid of something.”

“I’m not afraid of anything,” I said. “Like I said, I really like my little desk. So don’t ask me again.”

    He didn’t.

A few weeks later, while working in my new office. I looked around at the folders, books and papers lying all over my office floor but couldn’t find what needed to meet a contest deadline. My heart raced. I looked around my office. The room basically swallowed the tiny desk, making it look slightly out of place. Maybe I did need a bigger desk. Was Bill right? Was I afraid of something?

Unable to write, I pulled c. JoyBell C.’s book of poetry, All Things Dance Like Dragonflies (蜻蜓), from the bookshelf. I flipped through its pages, and her words about faith jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she had trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just trusting that as she opened up her wings and flew off in an unknown direction, things would work out.

At that moment, I recognized that a bigger desk symbolized bigger possibilities, stepping out in faith, and leaving my comfort zone.

【1】What was the limitation of the “secretary desk”?

A.It was too old to be functional.

B.It competed with the shelf for room.

C.It prevented the author focusing on writing.

【2】When did the author want to buy a new desk?

A.After she was stuck in a mess.

B.When she finished writing a book.

C.When she moved into a bigger house.

D.After she missed an important contest.

【3】What was the author afraid of before?

    A.Unemployment.

    B.Loss of inspiration.

    C.Uncertainty.

    D.Lack of trust.

【4】What would be the best title of the passage?

    A.My Writing Journey

    B.On the Wings of Change

    C.My Lifelong Faith

    D.On the Desk of Fate

  • 24、The past two years have been hard—many are still unable to travel around with restrictions still in place. Yet it has not stopped Zheng Zheng from discovering different coffee shops on a daily basis.

She is not one of those Internet influencers who check out different fancy cafes to make an income. Like millions who are taking on works-from-home positions, the project manager of an Internet company sees it as a way to escape her small apartment and remain productive.

“As long as there’s Wi-Fi, I can literally work anywhere,” Zheng told CGTN.

Many Silicon Valley executives have been rooting for the rise of remote working (远程办公) since 2020. Last May, Twitter announced its work-from-home plans, calling the flexibility “the fourth industrial revolution”.

Zheng said, “Remote working gives me great flexibility. I could better assign my time, rather than wasting it on things like washing up or taking the subway to the office.”

“Another thing probably is that you can have different sources of income,” the part-time designer and stylist added.

“But still, I believe remote working will never completely replace the traditional means of working,” she said after sharing all the advantages.

One disadvantage she pointed out is missing out on social interactions with your colleagues, and another is the extended working hours.

In a University of Chicago study, employees were found to work longer hours at home for the same task, as focused time was broken up by some distractions like childcare and online meetings.

Robin Dunbar, a professor of the University of Oxford, told CGTN that he believes remote working is overhyped (过度夸大) and certainly won’t last long. “Without face-to-face engagement and those casual meetings, the ‘flow’ that makes things work fast will be missing. Work groups quickly lose focus, and the sense of belonging is lost very quickly, ” he said.

【1】Why does Zheng Zheng explore different coffee shops every day?

A.To relax herself from working state.

B.To find out the most delicious coffee.

C.To look for a better work place for herself.

D.To check out different fancy cafes to make money.

【2】What advantage does Zheng Zheng value more about remote working?

    A.Low cost.

    B.The flexibility.

    C.Mental well-being.

    D.The sense of belonging.

【3】What does the underlined word “extended” in paragraph 8 mean?

    A.Irregular.

    B.Continuous.

    C.Longer than usual.

    D.Shorter than expected.

【4】What is the attitude of Robin Dunbar to the future of remote working?

    A.Appreciative.

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 26、请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Lang Lang is a worldclass pianist who grew up in Shenyang. He went to a piano school in Beijing when he was just eight. “You need fortune,” his father said. “But unless you work hard, no fortune will come.”

What made Lang Lang sad was that his piano teacher in Beijing didn’t like him. “You have no talent. You will never be a pianist.” As an eightyearold boy, Lang Lang was badly hurt. For the next two weeks he didn’t touch the piano. Wisely, his father didn’t push him, but waited.

Luckily, the day came when his teacher asked him to play some holiday songs. At first, he didn’t want to, but as he placed his fingers on the piano keys, he realized he could show other people that he had the ability to do it well. That day he told his father that he wanted to study with a new teacher. From then on, everything got turned around. He started winning competitions. Soon it was clear that he couldn’t stay in China forever—he had to play on the world’s big stages. In 1997 Lang Lang moved again, this time to Philadelphia, the US.

There he spent two years practicing and by 1999 he had worked hard enough for fortune to take over. After his successful performance at Chicago’s Raviniu Festival, concerts in Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall started pouring in. Lang Lang finally worked to reach the place where fortune spots him and lets him shine.
